The banshee’s attention never wavers from the centre of the fray, even as Sunjata ’s taunts draw her closer and closer, her hovering descent bringing her unnervingly low. She moves like a thing dragged forward by instinct alone, every motion sharp, jerking, wrong.
Sunjata ’s riptide detonates at near point-blank range. The wave tears outward with concussive force, slamming into the banshee and ripping through her form in a violent surge. At this distance the impact is unmistakable; her glide shudders violently, her body snapping backward as though struck by a solid wall. The scream that follows is raw and furious, breaking into a jagged pitch as she’s thrown off balance again, spectral fabric snapping wildly around her as the water disperses across roots and stone.
Melita ’s arrow lands true once more. The ice punches into the banshee’s form and blooms outward in a spreading fracture of frost, the chill locking into place along her ribs and shoulder. The cold visibly hinders her now, her movements less fluid, her hover uneven, the shriek that follows cutting short into something harsher and more enraged. Still, she does not slow in purpose, only in execution.
Jack ’s ice spears streak in immediately after, and the banshee vanishes. Not gone, but slipping fully incorporeal for a heartbeat, the spears slicing through empty space where she had been an instant earlier. They crash uselessly into bark and earth instead, splintering apart as she reforms just beyond them, untouched by the attack. It is the cleanest movement she’s made yet, a predator’s reflex honed by countless hunts.
Her head turns and this time her focus slides to Jack. Perhaps it is his distance. Perhaps his movement. Perhaps simply that he is not a demigod standing in her grasping range. With a piercing, furious scream, the banshee surges toward him, gliding low and fast, skeletal hands snapping forward with bone-cold intent as she lunges to seize his throat.
She misses.
