The way the daughter of Safrin used her magic made a jealous flare inside of Marcus, but he pushed it down. He didn't want that to be the reason he joined the guild. No, he wasn't asking about it to gain power or strength or an advantage over others. But it was still hard to look at someone his own age who had much more advanced magic than he did and not feel the way he did.
After setting his mug down without taking a drink, Marcus rested his forearms on the counter, leaning closer without quite realizing it, his cerulean eyes bright with an excitement he rarely let surface. Something in his chest loosened, then flared, a warmth that had nothing to do with the hearth or the tea. Something besides jealousy. Maybe excitement? Hope? Anticipation?
He finally picked his mug back up, and took a sip.
He had grown up in a place where worth was measured in endurance: how long you could last in the cold, how steady your aim was, how much weight you could carry across ice and snow.
