"Mm, s'why you get everythin'," Jack says simply, reaching up to tug his hair free of its tie and run his fingers through it before he slouches back into the bunk properly, letting the mattress cradle his weight after the world has pressed down on him all day. The Ark has always gotten his best, from the moment he'd towed her out of the dead water, and she'd never balked when his best fell short of his usually high standards.

So as she settles beside him, her mind the rich, crisp blue of the Arclight on a Longheat morning, abundant with wavesong and the wind in her sails, it doesn't just feel good, it feels right. She offers the kind of peace Jack always looks for when things go awry, and it's enough to pull him under before he so much as realises it.

As the ship rocks beneath them on the water the rise and fall of the Captain's chest grows slow and deep, the tension melting out of him for at least these next few hours. And whilst The Ark has opted to keep a polite distance - a kindness Jack hasn't expected and doesn't know how to repay - as the moon rises higher he'll find her in the dark regardless, pressed close until the dawn.
