Rather than being melancholy, Noah’s platitudes seemed to lean towards a quiet acceptance. Things were done. Final. Melita doubted she could ever be so stoic, to let it roll off her back. She was more apt to shrug, then brood later – and with such a situation, there would be much to wither about. But maybe after wars, it was easier to settle into something not so tragic and heart-stopping. Better, and not bitter – a lesson she’d never quite managed to embroil in her own psyche.

But she remembered the griffin well, all fire and power, wings and lift. “What else do you have?”
