One hand fell forward onto the table, reaching idly across the distance between them, as though she couldn’t stand to be separated even by so little space as a table. If Zavien took her hand, she’d smile shyly; if not, she’d hope that the motion looked casual.

I missed you, she nearly said, but held her tongue, afraid to be too much too soon, afraid of falling too hard too fast. Anani made a soft noise somewhere between a purr and a trill, meant just for Soh, who heard the reproach in it. What was she doing if she couldn’t be herself?
So she gathered her courage. ”Is it silly to say that I missed you?” she asked, something vulnerable in her eyes. Satisfied, her cloud wyrm surreptitiously slithered down from her shoulder to her lap, where she curled up to purr quietly. If cloud wyrms were capable of winking, Anani might have offered the expression to Sol beneath the table; as it were, she flicked her tail idly instead.
