"You would be shocked at the sort of things I know, and the list only grows after a few cocktails," Mateo trills, beaming a dimpled grin in Colt's direction and raising his drink again before taking an enthusiastic sip of it. "Though in truth the only dream I made come true was-- oh! Hello, sorellina!" Interrupted, and perhaps for the best (but actually maybe not judging by what happens next) by Flora as she dazzles her way over to them, the botanist leans easily into the arm around his waist.
"We did not get as far as poaching," he confesses. "And I did not realise I was such a poachable commodity." His bright smile starts to fade by degrees as he notices that tell-tale brittle sweetness in his sister's voice, blue eyes flicking from Flora to Colt and then back again as the conversation takes the sort of turn he's usually only accustomed to seeing when people square up in bars. On those occasions someone is usually gunning for a fight too - and tonight it seems to be the birthday girl.
His brows do furrow into a frown as Colt opts to rise to the bait rather than to let it go, and he ends up breaking the tense silence, for better or worse, with the slurping of his straw in the dregs of his drink among the icecubes. "What if," he announces, his own arm fitting around Flora's waist in turn, "we did not do this at a birthday party? Shocking, I know, but I feel as though it might sour all of the good humour. But just in case it was up for debate, I am not available for purchase or poaching or... or whatever is happening here."
