”I don’t really know,” Soh said honestly, brow creasing with her own confusion. ”When we were talking, it was like… arguing in circles. I kept trying to explain to her that it wasn’t anything to do with her, but she seemed really hurt by the idea that I thought she’d just give me a handout. Like it wasn’t even about Hak Etme anymore, not really.” Her lips twisted into a frown. ”In the end, we kind of just let it go. I’ve never… felt like that before. Not with Flora.” So frustrated, so unheard, so misunderstood - and that frustration was evident now, in the way she huffed out an uneven breath.

”So then, at her birthday party, Colt came. And I don’t know what happened, but I looked over and all of a sudden they were arguing. I don’t know what they said before I walked over, but what I did hear was Colt calling me a liar.” Her lips trembled at that. She’d always tried so hard to be honest, to be someone who told the truth, even when it sucked. To hear someone saying otherwise was devastating. ”And I just - that hurt, Zav.” Tears prickled at the back of her eyes, frustrating her further. What was wrong with her that she was suddenly so teary?

”I stepped out of the party. Flora came and found me, to make sure I was okay. From what she said, it sounded like Colt had accused her of trying to control me and keep me close, take away my choice, that kind of thing. But that was never what Flora said, not to me. She told me that if I wanted to go to Hak Etme, she’d support me even though she’d think it was crazy. She said she was just angry that Colt didn’t give her a heads up.” Soh shook her head, confusion settling in the spaces between the words. ”But that doesn’t make any sense. Why would Colt need her permission to recruit people for Hal Etme? And why would she come to Flora’s party just to stir up trouble?” There were too many pieces missing, pieces that Soh felt sure would clarify things.

”So when we got back to the party, Colt was gone. And the next day she sent me this.” Pulling reluctantly from Zavien’s hold, Soh reached for the pack she’d deposited by the couch. She pulled out the sheathed dagger, offering it to him hilt first, and then handed him the note, gesturing for him to read it.
