JACK

The second round arrives fortuitously, and Jack hides a private smile as the empties are removed and he frosts his glass, unable to do the same for Vesper this time with the speed at which he seizes the liquor. Even a few seasons ago an' that's what I'd have said, he admits of the young demigod's assumptions, rolling his shoulder in a shrug a little too subtle to really be considered as much. But now... I mean, it ended up workin' out well for me in the long run.

Without Flora there would be no Ark, not in the form she takes now. It's not a comfortable truth, certainly, but that doesn't make it any less so. The lesson that came with all that could go wrong brought with it a taste of how it felt to go right, and as Jack has been told and has learned for himself, if he's going to live for as long as he plans to, it'll be a lonely road if he treads it alone.

Give me some credit. Jack hides his scoff behind a quick sip of his drink, but the ghost of the smile still sits on his lips when he lowers the glass again. I'd never say try. That secret would be a brand for Colt to carry the same as it had been for Flora. He doesn't know the rancher nearly well enough to say whether she'd bear that weight better or more viciously after that initial shock, but that's why he's not the one making the decision.

The rest, though? Why not? Her thoughts ain't gonna cut me the way they'd cut you.
