VESPER

The innocence is still there, clean enough to be irritating, and beneath it the bruise of being alone presses up through Finch’s thoughts like something touched too hard and too often. Vesper lets both pass without comment, his chin lifting by the smallest degree as silence stretches between them, pale eyes steady on the thief while the shadows keep their dark, patient breathing around his boots.

Finch’s quip lands with all the bright desperation of teeth shown from inside a trap and for a moment, Vesper only looks at him. Then the corner of his mouth shifts, not quite into a smile, though close enough that the difference feels deliberate, and one pale brow rises as if Finch has said something mildly more interesting than foolish. "If I wanted to pin you in place," he says, leaning forward slightly from the waist, his voice dry and low enough that it doesn’t travel far beyond the narrow space between them, "it wouldn’t be to keep you still." He straightens before the words can settle into anything too generous, leaving Finch’s mind to do whatever work it likes with the shape of them. Vesper has never been especially fond of restraint as an end in itself, not when tension is so much more useful if it has room to pull taut and extend whatever sensations the demigod has intended, but that is hardly a truth Finch has earned, and hardly one Vesper feels inclined to give away in a wet hole beneath Torchline.

Instead, he clicks his tongue softly against his teeth and glances once more toward the empty cache, the ring on his thumb turning beneath the slow drag of another finger. "Good thing you’ve got a whole boat ride back to King’s End to figure out how you’re gonna explain this to Jack." His eyes return to Finch over one shoulder, lingering with a cool, amused sharpness. Then the shadows around Vesper’s feet draw upward in a dark, misting curl, folding around him with the same easy obedience as a card vanishing up his sleeve. The last thing Finch will see before Vesper slips from the tunnel’s immediate reach is the faint edge of that smirk and the moon-bright blue of his eyes before the dark closes neatly behind him and he disappears.
