I believe that the sun has risen,
The words were barely out of her mouth before a knock sounded at the door. His eyes snapped to the sound, nerves already rising in anticipation. He was faintly aware that his breaths were shallow, distant and wholly unnecessary as the kind older woman stepped into the room.
'Hi, mom!' rang through the air, stealing what little breath he had as the reality solidified a little more. Zavien felt like he was floating, the surreal experience sending his heartbeat pounding in his ears. He wondered if Soh could feel it through the hold of his hand like he could feel hers beating against his chest. He wondered if she could feel the moment it skipped at being called 'dad,' at having this woman acknowledge it. Until this moment, it had felt like an imaginary bubble they'd created around them, something fragile that could burst with a light touch.
Now, as the doctor smiled his way, the dream-like bubble melted away, becoming real as it bled into the outer world. Zavien returned the smile, his nerves starting to settle as she confirmed both of their health. And when that ultimate question arrived, he turned to Soh, laughing lightly as he joked, "I don't know if we can wait that long." His hand squeezed hers gently, excitement and anticipation building in his chest.
