Carlo has just managed to wrestle the entire honey cake off the dessert table and is in the process of persuading it beneath the tablecloth where he and his brother can eat their weight in sugar when a hand reaches out to ruffle his hair. He freezes, a dozen lies vying for attention on his tongue at once - our dads said we could have this, or I'm one of the waiters, I just never grew that tall, or look over there, a giant hanging snake! - before Finch's voice, smooth and charming, lets him know how unnecessary they all are.
"How rude. I'm Calan, you know," he says haughtily, though the grin trying to spread across his face completely ruins the tone. "We're not picking pockets today. We were told it was wrong by a very wise and very old person, you know. But if you've got anything good in your pockets to trade, I can give you a bit of this cake?" He holds it up enticingly.
