When it is time to move, he shifts without delay.
Black hide rolls over him, his body lengthening into something stronger and simpler, and the silence that follows inside his mind feels like relief. He takes the left side of the herd, wide enough to guide without crowding, his ears turned toward every restless snort and shifting hoof. For now, he keeps pace along their flank, a dark line against the morning, ready to cut off anything that tries to break for open ground.
