Noe
Change my priorities
Colt’s words, framed not as an order but as an offer, took Noe somewhat by surprise. She’d done little, she thought, to earn such a show of trust - aside from be here, and continue to show up, and to offer what little she could towards the budding region she’d chosen to call home. But then again, wasn’t that all anyone could do? Maybe that, as insignificant as it felt to the engineer, was enough that her continued presence bore some weight. ”Sure, I could talk to him,” she said, flashing a smile at the marshal as she sidestepped an unstable patch of rock. ”I’ll let you know what I find out.”
As for the potential parallels between the desert and the forest, Noe made a face. She supposed it would be more difficult to live with the flora and fauna here in peace and harmony, given that they were mostly actively murderous.
They traveled into the rot-infested region, and Noe tilted her head to one side, considering the different perspective. ”I mean, that’s a thought,” she said thoughtfully. ”We’d just have to be sure we got it all - but it definitely feels like a high-risk, high-reward kind of situation to me.” Which, given Colt’s desire to tame Hak Etme, might be right up the rancher’s alley, but Noe was an engineer. Weighing risk was something she did regularly, and she almost always chose the path that held the least of it. After all, if she wanted her buildings to last, she had to make sure there were as few weak points as possible.
When they finally made it to an area of the jungle that was a little different, Noe perked up. ”I like this spot,” she said, leaning down to survey some of the different plant species, which didn’t seem as established here as elsewhere in the jungle. ”Maybe we could look for animal droppings, see if maybe they’re less frequent here than the other places we’ve visited?” Then, straightening, she looked around. ”And we’ll want to make sure there’s fresh water relatively nearby.”
