If only his loss wasn't so fresh. Once upon a time, Korbin would have enjoyed comparing traditions, exchanging banter, trading insults and smiles in equal measure. Held a shallow disdain for outsiders as a shield behind which he would be soft and caring and sympathetic to shared experiences.
But he didn't remember how to smile. Had forgotten about empathy, set aside compassion and care. Maybe they still existed in him somewhere, buried beneath the pain, but today he could not reach them. Her little story was only a splinter of glass cutting into raw flesh, opening up more wounds to bleed. Or was it the same one, just grown a little larger?
Korbin turned his face away, expression stony. "We burn our dead," was the only reply he gave. Rough, raw, unhelpful. He didn't want to talk about this. Did not want her sympathy, clumsy or otherwise. It had been fine so long as they weren't talking about him, but now they were approaching dangerous territory and the young man tensed gradually, bracing for more probing questions, more shared details he couldn't care less about.
She better find someone else if this was how the conversation would continue.
