The kind of flawless they think I should be
The result was fairly underwhelming. Even as she flailed her arms and legs to keep level in the water, Maea felt her face heat with embarrassment. The woman - because it was a woman, she saw that now and it made her alarm completely unnecessary - was entirely unaffected. Was apologizing, even, and Maea was mortified.
Yes, she had been startled, but was that any excuse to lash out?
"M-me too" she replied, after a moment of several deep breaths. "Sorry. I don't usually... do that."
Lash out, throw stuff, splash people... really, Maea usually considered herself to be fairly poised, even somewhat confident as of late. But all that was falling away now, reducing her to a blushing, stammering little girl again.
The water was not at all refreshing anymore, just cold.
