What do you get when two ruthless assassins raise their daughter travelling through the wildest reaches of Caido? Take one look at Theea and you'll get a pretty good idea. Cheerful and tenacious in equal measure, and curious beyond all else, she began her journey on a mission to find those her mother once called family. And find them she did, soon rubbing elbows with demigods, leaders and even ghosts from the past. Her determination is resolute, her thirst for knowledge unmatched. We can't wait to see where her next adventure takes her!
Congratulations, Theea!

"Oh, fuck off," Jack says quickly, surprising himself with the heat in his words. "When didn't I care? When I peeled you out of the fountain and stayed with you all night? When I let you drag me all over The Climb for the hell of it? When I'd have killed that lanky Ancient if you hadn't turned up in the Labyrinth?" He raises his eyebrows. It can absolutely be argued that Jack hasn't always cared - because he hasn't - but certainly in recent seasons, the ability to keep Flora safely at arm's length has eroded until he finds her, as she is right now, pressed right against his heart.
And yet, considering he can literally read minds, once again the captain finds himself blinking in the dazzle of incomprehension as he tries to make sense of her thoughts. "What does havin' me mean to you?" he asks, a mix of exasperated and attempting patience, only for her laughter to cut through it entirely.
He nearly shakes her, as if that might loose the rising hysteria from her mind like shaking spare change out of a discarded pair of pants. Nearly - but he doesn't. "They're just words," he reminds her. The things he'd said to Safrin, things she really ought never have had to witness. Not knowing whether to release her and let her whirl away across the coast like a brewing storm or to keep hold of her and risk whatever other wrath that might provoke, Jack eventually forces out a long breath and reaches out to tilt her chin back up towards him.
"I'm gonna kiss you now, and I really don't want you to slap me for it. Okay?"

Blinking, Flora's eyes flit back and forth between Jack's, shocked not by his sudden outburst, but by the insinuation that maybe he did care. It had her wanted to pull out of his arms, to submerge herself in the waves once more where she could lessen the way he so easily played with her emotions. "So you showing you care is by making me feel bad for asking you to come with me places? To going around killing the people who've hurt me instead of asking if I'm doing alright?" On some level she did think that was his way of showing he cared, but as he'd pointed out, he'd shown her more; she knew he was capable of more than that.
"It means..." Suddenly tongue-tied, the queen's thoughts are a bright tangled mess of golden and red strings hopelessly knotted together in an effort to conceal a single word hidden far beneath. "..that you'd do things with me without me having to bargain with you for it. That...I don't know, that maybe you like being around me, and don't consider it being dragged all around the Climb." She shivers despite the heat. "And yeah, the night at the fountain was...you were really great." Flora all but whispers. Well, actually he'd been an asshole but then he'd been really great. Too great, actually. For how much joy she'd felt the following morning to know that he was still there, had cared enough to stick around, that it had taken something as fucked up as having her shoulder nearly torn off and her heart stomped on for him to show her any amount of intimacy, only for it to all to just all be swept by the wayside afterward, had hurt more than Asta's teeth ever had.
"It doesn't matter anyway. I'm not playing this game with you." Once, he'd told her that his end of their arrangement was that he'd just do the things she told him to, and gods but the thought of it just made her feel sick now.
"Mm. I bet a lot of things are just words." She sasses back, feeling like her cheeks were suddenly on fire. Wanting to toss her head as his fingers directed her chin back toward him, his words had that heat traitorously descending down her neck and toward her belly.
I want to be when you fall on me like night I wanna kill the lights

Jack raises his eyebrows at her first remarks, as if waiting for Flora to back up and remember the person she's dealing with. They're close enough now, he thinks, for the Doubletake to have noticed if not entirely realised that on a scale of one to emotional maturity, Jack falls way behind the bell curve to the point where even being in someone's presence half-voluntarily might as well be some perverse declaration of friendship or love. She's right, though - he has proven he's capable of more than the bare minimum, at least with Flora.
Even so - it's just words, he'd said, and that goes for more than anything he'd told Safrin in her presence. "If I'd not wanted to be with you at The Climb," he points out quietly, "I'd have not been with you at The Climb." For all the leverage Flora has on him, there are plenty of legitimate reasons for Jack to have stayed in Torchline, around his ship and his business and his connections, rather than taking a personal trip with Torchline's queen to another region entirely.
All of that is irrelevant, though, because for all of her sass and her not playing games and it not mattering, Jack senses no objection in the Doubletake's thoughts in response to his final comment, and so unless she decides to shove him over at the last possible moment, he leans in to silence her with his lips. It's a kiss that might as well be an apology, for all of the things Jack isn't and doesn't know how to be when it comes to Flora's expectations. The press of his lips isn't fiery or passionate, but that's not to say there isn't something in it that begs for an understanding that goes beyond whatever arrangement they'd made so long ago.

Raising her eyebrows right back at him—biologically she might not have Ronin's eyebrows but she plays a damn good eyebrow game thanks to him—Flora's thoughts flash neon high letters that spell out w e l l ? He'd more than proved on the stupidly perfect date he'd taken her on that he was more than capable of putting in the effort when it was required of him, and while she couldn't quite put it to words, the (only) night they'd spent together had meant more to her than she could ever possibly say. That's what made it sting so much more acutely when he couldn't be bothered to give her the time of day or made it seem like she was just an annoyance he was obligated to trail after.
"Then why act like it's such an inconvenience to you?" Why was she always dragging him here or there, always imposing on him with this or that?
There's no objection in Flora's thoughts, stubborn as the majority of them suddenly are. The strands of gold and red that covered that certain word were replaced by immovable trees that cast lengthy and haunted shadows across the stiffening landscape of her mind. Even so, as Jack's lips pressed against hers, Flora softened by degrees, unable not to. She'd been in love with the idea of being in love with Jack ever since she'd first met him years before, and while she never could have predicted the strange situationship they now found themselves aboard, gods but she found herself inexorably drawn back to him time and time again. Don't, she thinks, even as she drops her shoes and wraps her arm around his neck. You can't just kiss me and make everything okay.
But somehow he could.
Because he was.

Because I'm an asshole, Jack might have said, but Flora already knows that much. Because if I say it's anything other than an inconvenience, then I might have to think about what it actually means to me, he might have added, and he doubts she knows that part, but luckily enough he's saved by the taste of her lips and the warmth of her arms around his neck. The don't in her thoughts isn't remotely echoed by her body, and so the captain pretends he hasn't heard it.
Everything can be okay as long as they're doing this, he decides. This is easy, this is fine, this is better than conversation anyway. Saying as much defeats the purpose, and so instead as he slowly draws back from her lips he's already letting his hands slip along the curve of her hips, as if to undo the hard work she'd put into getting herself dressed again. His gaze flickers over her shoulder, just brief enough to check they're still alone--
And he freezes.
"What the fuck is that," he murmurs, the words almost spoken directly against her mouth such is the lack of distance between them. In the distance, he swears he's spotted a sea panther prowling along the coastline, but it looks very, very wrong.
Then it roars with force enough to shake the sand beneath their feet.

Whether or not things would have been better or worse for the pair had Flora been able to read Jack's thoughts as easily as he could read hers, was anyone's guess. Certainly it would have eliminated a good deal of the uncertainty she felt in his presence—he was very good at making her feel as though arm's-length is where she belonged, such that she simultaneously felt distanced from him and wildly wanted when he let her step any closer—but she'd also have been subject to the rest of his thoughts as well. All the ones which had nothing to do with her, the ones which did find her grating, and annoying, and loud.
Melting against him as his hands drop to her waist, Flora is already rising onto her toes in an effort to bring his mouth back against hers when she feels him still. "Wh—" She mumbles, the sound a touch dreamy and utterly detached from the predator stalking down the coastline. Just beginning to twist in his arms to see what he was looking at, the roar has her grasping for him, the sound of which almost immediately douses the garnet flames coating her mind.
"What the fuck." She repeats, their conversation all but forgotten as her eyes widen. Not expecting Jack to accompany her, Flora abandons her shoes (and presumably the captain as well), before heading down the beach.
