Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.
Congratulations, Niki!

Patient and forbearing, he nodded, taking those initial concerns off his shoulders. When she consented to learning more about blocks, he maneuvered again in front of her, taking the stance from moments prior. “You have some options, like blocking as you did before,” which she’d demonstrated she understood. “Or you can attempt parrying.”
Taking a breath, he persisted. “If you aim a punch towards me,” and giving her an opportunity to do so, while he demonstrated, hands gently, but forcefully, maneuvering her incoming jab so it flickered outward, rather than anything compelling or harmful – and leaving him opportunity to strike. “I can force your hands to the side. It will then put me in a position to counter.” Once she’d visualized and seen it with her own eyes and movements, he offered to strive and return the favor. “Come back into your stance and you can try.”

Alys returned to her stance, holding her arms up as before, and offered a punch towards Deimos. When he deflected her attack, she absorbed the information shared readily enough, and she nodded to show she understood. ”That makes sense,” she said, before resuming her posture. ”Is a deflection more useful than just blocking? If it opens up the opponent to a potential counter?”
This time, when Deimos came at her with another blow, Alys strove to copy his movements from before and succeeded in deflecting his strike to the side. From here, she could see how she would be able to maneuver to counter with an attack of her own, her deflection having left him open. Of course, this was Deimos, and no doubt he would still manage to best her if she attempted a counter strike, but it was useful information all the same.

“That depends,” he added with a wrinkle to his nose, a caveat she probably wouldn’t care for, but he could glean further. “But if you intend to get further into the fight, or end it yourself, rather than simple evasion, then yes, countering would be more beneficial.” It all waxed and waned on one’s position at the interval – was this an opponent far stronger and superior? Someone merely in training, agreed upon ahead of time? There were always factors to consider, but in the end, he tilted his head. “Whatever you find most comfortable and efficient for the moment.”
But then there were movements and motions, and he watched, waited, while she copied his techniques. He stayed still throughout the demonstration, and while he made no bid to move against her, she’d be able to see the workings of a blockade or a parry – given everything she’d learned already. “Good work. If that is your favored action, you can put more emphasis on that when you have other opportunities to practice.”

At the notion that it depends, Alys wrinkled her nose. Of course there wouldn't be a straight answer, because that would be too easy. Still, Deimos made a good point, and the seer nodded. "I understand," she said. She relaxed her stance, making a mental note to find someone to practice with so that she could at least hold her own long enough to get away in a fight. It would be ideal to come out the victor, of course, but she had no desire to lose, either - not when doing so would likely cost her her life.
"Thanks, Dei," she said with a smile as they wrapped up their practice. "Do you need to get going, or do you have time for something to eat?" She gestured down the Boondocks, back towards New Haven. "There's a new place I've been meaning to try, if you've got time." Regardless, it had been pleasant to spend time with a friend - even if it seemed like they had done more work than just spending time together.
