Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.
Congratulations, Niki!

She relinquished her hold on the necklace, glad to accept the hug that followed. It still felt weird having a strangely enlarged belly between them. Maybe she should ask about the gender or when it's due or any of the other questions that come along with pregnancy, but Nova could already feel exhaustion pulling at her limbs, and if she started asking questions now, it'd be hours.
Stepping back, she spotted the little dragon at her feet, giggling when she crouched to accept the bag. "Thanks!" She didn't have to open it to know what it was, hearing the click of scales when she slipped it into her bag. "These are good for now! I have plenty of snacks in my bag for the trip." Her smile was wide, only slightly drawn at the edges.
Nova gave them both a wave, not waiting to see if they insisted on her staying or accepting more payment. "I'll see you at the Feast!" she called out, spinning on her heels to skip back from whence she came.

Zavien
As quickly and easily as taking a breath, the young, vibrant woman produced a duplicate necklace and offered it out to Soh. She grinned like it was nothing, accepting the hug and scales as if that was enough for her services. He was stunned, still trying to understand her when Nova spun away. "Okay. Thanks - " but she was already skipping off, and the final word dropped flat into silence, "again."
Chuckling in disbelief, he moved to stand next to Soh, watching her leave in a flurry of color. "She's quite a character, isn't she?" He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, placing his free hand against the pendant on his chest and smiling down at her. "But I can't thank her enough for giving us this." Not just the necklaces, but peace of mind, security.
After a quiet moment of appreciation, he planted a kiss on her forehead and stepped back towards the ladder and the incomplete work. "I should finish up these shutters, but do you want to help me buy the last bit of food when I'm done? We could grab some dinner in town?"

Nova departed as quickly as she'd arrived, leaving Soh shaking her head, bemused and entertained in equal measure. Before getting pregnant, she'd thought that she could keep up with the young woman's boundless energy, but now she wasn't so sure. She was tired after the interaction, despite having done nothing other than exist in Nova's orbit.
"She is certainly that," she responded to Zavien, wrapping an arm around his waist before covering his hand with her own. "But she's a good friend, and very generous in giving us this." She could have asked any price, and they'd have found a way to pay it - but all she wanted was Sol's shed scales and a little admiration of her craft.
As Zavien stepped back to the ladder, Soh nodded. "That sounds lovely," she replied. "I'll just go take stock of what we've got, and then we'll know what we still need to get." And then, leaving Zavien to his work on the shutters, Soh made her way to the kitchen, where she began to dig through cabinets and cupboards, making a list of what they would need to buy at the market.

Nodding his head in quiet agreement, he wondered if there might come a time they could pay the woman back in more than scales. But for now - much to his disbelief - she seemed content with the exchange, happy to give them peace with her magics when little else could. His hand drifted back to the necklace, smiling down at Soh when he felt her heartbeat there. He'd never complain about the girl's odd kindness.
Giving her shoulders a gentle squeeze, he released her, hoping that the exhaustion he saw on her face would pass while she took stock of the kitchen. "Okay. I'll come find you in a bit," he said, granting her another smile as he turned to the ladder again. Sol gathered the extra nails and he ascended to finish the work. It went faster now, no longer distracted by Nova's impending visit. They secured the first upper window then the lower ones, making sure the thick wood shutters were strong enough to withstand a miniature assault if it came. He wasn't taking any chances with Soh or the baby, and he knew the risks that came with the night.
When he was done a short while later, Zavien found Soh in the kitchen as she'd promised. He gave her a warm smile and ushered her out the door for their shopping trip, eager to finish their preparations before the darkness set upon them all. Their companions followed close at their heels, helping to carry what they could of the supplies in hopes of getting a treat when the trip was finished, and much to their luck, the couple stopped at a small diner on the way home from their shopping, refueling themselves before stocking the home they were slowly building together.
