Thorn, trying his best to try and corral the current unicorn, finds it nearly impossible to catch up and try to guide it back in. The unicorn seems surprisingly smart – or maybe it’s obvious how much the courtesan doesn’t really know – because no matter how much Thorn tries to push toward the unicorn, it seems to not want to return to the herd.

It probably doesn’t help that the herd has increased its pace quite a bit, so Thorn tries to push himself and his horse to try and cut off the unicorn right as Colt appears with all her wisdom and help. He exhales a sharp sound of relief when she reaches him and starts to help, though her call to the area ahead has him grimacing. “It ain’t that strong yet!” He calls back out to her, clearly frustrated and realizing perhaps he should work on practicing his magic more so it might stand a chance at being stronger.

Lemme see.” He mutters to himself, positioning him and Tex into the pocket that Cherry and Colt aren’t as they apply pressure, and Thorn reaches out with his illusion magic again. Up ahead, there aren’t more riders, but there’s the sudden glint of a shower of sparks that he hopes might spook the unicorn back to the rest of the herd and take off the exit.

Thorn uses his illusion magic to try and guide the unicorn back in!

SUNJATA
the heartless
so look out, i fear that they follow near
for from the gallows, you'll swing for all the kids to see
The black bear is dismissed and already the herd starts to ease, calming down in the long strides of the gallop they’d picked up. And Sunjata listens for Nikandr to explain that it looked like they were heading the right way still even if things had started getting a little out of control for a moment. With the pegasus’ ears no longer pinned, he picks up an easier stride that hopefully isn’t as exhausting as it has been at this point for Niki in the wagon as they take up the remainder of the trek to the carved out river bed.

Vesper finds his unicorn relaxing the further he gets from them, and before the demigod knows it, the unicorn starts to fall back in line with the lowered speed the herd has started to take. It melds in with the rest of the herd easily, no longer antsy and angry as it continues the trajectory toward the river. For Colt and Hawthorn, the current unicorn being a pain feels the pressure applied from Colt, ignoring the shouting and sounds that occur. It’s the sparks and the pressure form the both of them that inevitably end up pushing the unicorn back with the rest of the herd.

And for the rest of the trek, this little last leg, it finally comes together. They reach the broken up ground of where the river would go and between the help form the hands and with everyone else, they manage to get the herd to stop around it so that they’d be in the prime spot for when Sunjata could finally call Rae back down to complete the quest.

But they aren’t quite done yet – now, all that’s left is the clean up and putting up fences and walking them to make sure there’s no gaps for the unicorns to get out of, and setting up feeding stations.

Round 4! LAST ONE YOU GUYS ROCK

We need 2 to put up fences and/or check them for gaps or holes (the hands will help with this, too), 1 to set up feeding and water stations (also will have help from the hands), and 1 to help make sure they hadn’t lost anything along the way!

No post order! <3

COLT
I had a vision last night
Horses on the granite plains
"Look plenty strong to me!" she shouts back to Hawthorn , the flash of his illusion ahead finally accomplishing what they could not. Pulling Cherry into a slower pace to rejoin the side of the herd without flushing it, she shoots the greenhorn a proud grin.

The mass of unicorns seems to settle, or maybe everyone just takes it a little more cautiously after the rough break, and the approach to their final destination is smooth. With her energy fed into the chase and the leather, Colt's quick abrasion from this morning has smoothed away, and her mind unwinds as the work becomes muscle memory. It's exactly the sort of spill she needs, accomplishing work still while being given the miles to run her thoughts ragged enough to rest. Might not fully keep overnight, or might settle fully, but it's a hell of a lot better than when she began, and it's proof perhaps she ought to make the time to ride out her worries more often ever since losing the ranch, else she might continue to lose more than to all the ways she lets the world wind her.

"Back on fences?" she calls out to Thorn as they get to the carved run of the empty river and work on holding the herd steady enough to dismount and station them here. Cherry is passed off to a hand with a nod of thanks, while Colt reaches out for the supplies again. Squinting a bit at the area theyre in, she finds a starting point and starts to stake the temporary bit of fencing into the ground, looking back for Thorn to unspiral the lines that'll connect them all. It's arduous work, but together they'll make it sturdy and complete, allowing them all to wipe their hands of this wrangling.

Ensuring nothing else needs done, Colt doesn't depart without getting a message to Vesper about where to meet her in two day's time before she departs back to Hak Etme.

The sparks work and Thorn exhales a sigh of relief, followed by a laugh as he slows his horse down to join Colt as the herd starts to snow. It isn’t far now, everyone settling and growing more tired and haggard as the minutes tick on, trying to absorb whatever Colt’s doing to understand the deeper meanings of what he should be doing – but her smile flashed his way was enough to tell him he’s done well.

They slow and come to a stop, keeping the unicorns corralled around the river, and as he dismounts he feels the ache in his bones that feel far too deep for his healing magic to touch. But the end is in sight and Thorn finally starts to feel the heaviness of the past couple of days weigh on him. “Aye, aye!” He calls back to Colt, flashing a playful salute that’s only a shade of the energy he usually has. His horse is handed off and he moves to collect portions of the fencing again, helping Colt and the hands put them up and surveys the area to make sure they don’t have any holes or gaps in the fencing to cause any loose unicorns.

VESPER

Vesper watches the last of the herd settle around the broken riverbed, their restlessness spreading out into the practical business of water, fencing, and feed. The work has not made anything simpler, but it has at least given the day a shape, and in that shape there has been enough room to keep moving.

Colt and Thorn head toward the fencing, and Vesper lets his attention pass over them without lingering, though the effort of it sits tight through his shifted body. Niki being left to help with water might look cruel from a distance, given the uneven ground and the long day already behind them, but Vesper judges it the kinder option compared to sending him back along the trail to search for anything that might have been lost. The route behind them has too much distance, too much churned earth, and too many places where a missed bundle or dropped tool might disappear into the grass

He turns one black ear toward Sunjata and sends his voice through the attuned bond, dry and low beneath the shape of it. I’ll check and see if we dropped anythin'. If you don’t see me back, means we didn’t and I went home.

With that, Vesper angles away from the riverbed and starts back along the path they carved through the land, his pace steady rather than hurried. His dark head lowers as he goes, pale eyes sweeping the trampled grass, the scuffed soil, and the places where the herd had bunched or scattered. Whatever comes next can wait behind him for a while. For now, there is only the trail, the fading marks of their passage, and the simple task of finding what has been left behind.

and you know me, my will is eternal, and you know me you've met me before
Saddle-sore even without having been in the saddle, Niki is pleased when they stop and he can ease himself down from the wagon, rolling his shoulders and summoning his cane so he can stretch out his legs. The others get to work almost immediately, he sees, clearly also keen to be done with the job, and so he does the same. "That leaves food and water to me," he says with a nod; nowhere near his skillset, but with the hands to help he thinks he can get it done.

Choosing some appropriate places for food and water stations to be set up, Niki directs the hands and uses his telekinesis, wherever possible, to assist in moving things into place. Once there are troughs available he also helps to transfer hay and water buckets, suggesting a chain rather than walking back and forth constantly. It also means less hobbling around on his part. Soon enough, there looks like enough to feed the herd until Sunjata calls Rae back down to complete the quest.

we must always be willing to be more savage to the angels
rip up their flesh and reveal them to be nothing
Everyone departs and the unicorns start to get corralled into the fencing that goes up. Holes are checked and fixed and with Vesper’s attuned answer that’s met with a nod and a grateful got it, thank you. the Heartless finds himself surveying what’s left. Niki heads out to help the hands with food and water and Sunjata finds himself drifting there to help out where he can. It all goes smoothly and the unicorns finally calm down and once that’s all done, Sunjata watches from where the wagons are – at the peacefulness of it all compared to what the last couple of days were.

Thanks for your help, everyone. Should be able to turn it in soon. Feel free to head home or meet me in New Haven for a hot meal and some drinks.” He offers out, unsure how many people would take him up on it. A few of the hands seem interested at least, and at least Sunjata would be able to make sure Niki made it home alright.

So, with everything completed, the final hardest part of the regional quest is complete.

DONEEEE THANK YOU GUYS <333
