"No, these definitely weren't here when I was a kid." Flora explains as she and Jack continue their birthday tour of the Greatwood. "Though based on everything I know, I'd probably not drink or swim in them." She adds, nodding to the pools that dot the ground.
Having returned back to the Ark after spending the night in the Guardian's Tree house, Flora and Jack had both changed before grabbing breakfast from a wagon in the Sidhe Village ("Just think of it like eggs", Flora had told Jack of the golden mush wrapped up in a tortilla), before dragging him towards a yet unexplored area of her childhood home.
In a deep green sweater and brown leggings, it took almost no time at all for Flora to look as at home in the Greatwood as she did on Torchline's white sands. With her hair unbound as it had been the day before but having opted for tall leather boots rather than flats, the Doubletake knelt down by one of the pools, peering into the strange non-reflective surface. "It looks like somewhere...in Halo, maybe? There's lots of snow." At least, she thought it was snow; the vista shown in the pool was like nothing she'd ever seen before. "What do you see in that one?"
It’s a good thing (for Pierce, that is) that Jack’s lollygagging behind, because someone else has been waiting in the region that had once been so beautiful before Flora and the gaggle of others had cleansed the Greatwood. Now, without the void and leeching purple, it’s horribly mundane and everything that Pierce is not a fan of.
As she kneels, Pierce has remained out of sight, going by the sound of her voice, and as it sounds like she’s stilled and he’s noted that she’s, well, mostly alone, the bull of a man pushes away from the large oaks he’d been using as coverage.
“I see someone who’s made a big mess of all the things we’ve done.” Pierce’s voice is at odds with the one Flora’s expecting; the deep baritone rumbling out of him in answer to her question. He doesn’t look into the pools, caring less for it, but the smirk that twists on his face is one she’ll be greeted with once she turns, as well as a certain numbing sensation to any kind of magic as the dome spreads out above them, encasing the two of them in their own private show as he pulls the rapier into view.
Morde ult activated ;) and he has the rapier!

Having not quite realized that she'd strayed out of Jack's telepathic range—the queen finding herself quite easily distracted by all the things the Greatwood had to offer—the sound of a voice that wasn't Jack's had the Doubletake's back straightening as she instinctively reached for the belt of daggers hidden beneath her sweater. Standing, she eyed Pierce for just a moment before her gaze flicked over his shoulder at the barrier shimmering around them before turning her chin so that her peripheral vision could confirm the sinking feeling rising in her gut: she was surrounded.
Clearing her throat, Flora arches a brow. After the letter she'd just received from Deimos and Evie the queen could only assume that this was some ambassador from the fae who was also upset with the choices she'd made the day she'd fought and freed the Mathair. "We've done?" She echoes, trying to keep her voice calm even as her mind called out for Jack in sky-high neon letters.
As the stranger pulls the rapier out, the Doubletake's breath catches in her throat. Having never seen the black blade in person, she'd heard about it often enough from her Dads to know precisely what it was she was looking at and what it could do.
“Yeah.” Pierce says, twisting a little to take a few steps one way before turning around to repeat it, pacing like a predator waiting for his prey to do something at least kind of fun before he strikes. The blade twists in his hand as he explains, condescending in a way that almost makes it seem tiring. “The Family had quite a few places around here that were cozy and you had to go and ruin ‘em all.” The blade glints as he moves it through the air, keeping the barrier up as he lets his deep rumbling voice continue to fill the air between them.
“So I think I’m gonna have to rectify some of that, huh, Flora?” Stopping in front of her, his electric gaze snaps back in on her, his dark curls hiding part of his brows but it’s clear he raises one with his question, preparing in the mean time for a game of cat and mouse.

The Family. If Jack was still able to get a read on Flora's mind, he'd feel panic spiderweb across her thoughts like hoarfrost even as she did her best to keep her expression neutral.
Eyeing the rapier, Flora pulls out one of her own daggers; coated in poison though it was it, it looked horrifically puny and insignificant compared to the black blade in Pierce's hand. Taking a few steps back, eager to reclaim some of the space that he'd so quickly taken from her, the queen lifts her chin, forcing out a laugh that she doubted was fooling anyone. "Well, first of all babe, you don't even really want this place. Take it from someone who used to live here, it's definitely more hassle than it's worth."
Wondering where the fuck Jack was—he wouldn't have left her, surely; was the barrier keeping him out? was that the point of it?—Flora silently weighed her options. "And second I've met with Dahlia before." Though she had no idea about the hierarchy of the Family, the Doubletake could only hope that namedropping the Reaper would give her some bonus points. "We've had drinks and talked about all of this, so...I think you're barking up the wrong tree."
The laugh certainly doesn’t fool Pierce. If anything, he focuses on the way she steps back, the way she tries to bring some distance between them, and it’s a movement that Pierce follows up with as amusement flickers across his face as she tries to offer a boon. A boon that goes nowhere with the slant of his smile. “That’s funny, seeing as Dahlia was the one to tell me to teach you to stay in your place.” Pierce says, unbothered and completely unfazed by the announcement Flora thinks it is.
“So how about you and your little friends quit ‘cleaning’ everything up, huh?” He eyes the dagger in her hand briefly before he decides to take the first step. She seems like she’s stalling him for Jack to make an appearance, even though Pierce cares little about whatever the captain can do.
Without so much of a breath, he steps forward, the black shadowed rapier rising just before Pierce steps forward further and slashes down with the blade, aiming for Flora’s torso.

Nearly stumbling backward now in her haste, the revelation that it was Dahlia who'd sent Pierce in the first place had Flora almost tripping over her own feet. Still trying to gauge how large the dome he'd placed around her was, whatever its size, it seemed fairly obvious that she wasn't simply going to be able to flee in order to avoid him. "Yeah, no that's—" Flora would have just agreed if Pierce had given her the time to do so. She'd have offered to sprinkle around void seeds right then and there if it kept the end of the rapier pointed at the sky instead of right at her.
Moving faster than she would have thought possible for a man of his bulk, Flora felt the flash of pain burn through her before her mind had even registered the sunlight glinting off the dark metal or the sound of tearing fabric and skin. Despite how the barrier had silenced the connection between captain and queen, Jack would hear her scream as she instinctively pressed a hand against her stomach. It was far from the worst injury she'd ever received in a fight, but the fact that the rapier that was now wet with her blood could kill her just as easily as it could open her up, wasn't lost on her.
"I won't, I won't—" She pleads, taking a step back. "I hate cleaning, I'll—"

It isn't just the way his telepathy winks out - Jack won't notice that until he's closer to the action - but the entire forest around them feels suddenly stifled, muffled, mundane. (Almost as if something has sucked the magic right out of the place, eh captain?)
He'd lost Flora to the range of his magic a few feet back, having been gazing into some strange pool or another, and only as he hears her voice - hears someone else's voice as well for that matter - does he realise that he should be feeling a trickle of thought and feeling along with it.
Now it isn't just stillness; the tiny hairs on the back of his neck raise in animalistic instinct, a base realisation that he's standing in the presence of something altogether other. Then Flora screams, and his feet move with the sort of swiftness reserved for stormy seas and monsters on the beach.
Jack bursts onto the scene in time to see the ebony blade slick with the Doubletake's blood, immediately reaching for all of the cords of his magic that would bring ice and ozone and tearing, gale-force winds to the area around them... and finding them pitifully wanting. With an expression that walks a fine line between dawning horror and abject fury, of course Jack tries again. And of course nothing happens.
"Flora," he almost growls her name. "Run. And don't stop running."

Well agreeing isn’t exactly a lesson learned now is it?
You need the grit, the proof that it’ll stick. That the second the opportunity arises for her to do something about it, that she’ll be good and convince the rest of them not to worry about it.
Some scars were great at reminding.
So he slashes forward, iron scented scarlet blooms into the air, impossible to see on the blade. Her scream melds with Jack’s growl, to the bull of a man, and he pays it little mind. He isn’t worried about the Captain. “See, I’m not quite sure if you really get it.” Pierce hums, almost a bored like tone, thinking little of the space she starts to create between them as he steps forward to slash again, keeping that silencing barrier up to nullify any attempts Flora or Jack had to utilize their magic.

Relief washed over Flora like a tidal wave at the sight of Jack. Had he not been barred from her thoughts, he might have felt the force of it, strong enough to sweep him away. "Jack, he's—" a member of the Family, she thought, the urge to reach for him almost overwhelming, only halted by the flash of anger in his eyes and the utter nothing that followed.
Pierce's approach was casual, almost bored, as if Flora's presence, her very efforts, were of no consequence to him. His disregard had ice freezing over the warm rush of relief she'd felt, numbing her fingers and toes, leaving them tingling with pins and needles.
Flora had never heard Jack growl her name in that way before—not in the heights of passion, not even during their worst arguments. It sent a shock through her, instinct pulling her to obey, though her body felt sluggish and too slow to react. Pierce was already there, his blade catching her on the arm, slicing cleanly down her bicep. The pain flared hot and sharp, but it was the terror welling within her that gripped her more fiercely, tightening her chest until it hurt to breathe. Her cry was quieter this time, a choked sound that barely escaped her lips, the fear eclipsing everything else, leaving her feeling smaller and closer to death than she'd ever been despite how comparatively minor her injuries were.

What he is remains a mystery to Jack in every sense of the word, the captain finding himself feeling almost feverish with the sudden panic of not knowing, and it's only decades of survival instinct that unglue his feet from the ground. No magic, no telepathy, and a blade he doesn't need to be a mind-reader to know is much more than your average sword.
Regardless, the hulk of a man seems utterly uninterested in him, something Jack might feel some kind of way about had he been able to utilise the full force of his power. As it stands, though, the stranger lances another attack at Flora, and her cry has him moving before his higher senses tell him it's a bad idea. "She gave you an answer, now put that fuckin' toothpick down," he snaps; the blade from his boot is in his hand, lancing through he air to try and strike Pierce in the arm holding the sword.
At the same time, for better or worse, Jack finds himself directly between Flora and the path of the blade.
