Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.
Congratulations, Niki!

The illusion worked, and Alys wanted to crow with elation. She'd never been in a situation that was this high-stakes, and to have come from an Abandoned with only basic illusion magic to a self-assured seer with a variety of assets - well, there was something satisfying about her ability to contribute to the fight.
Melita's flaming arrow found its mark, and then Zavien was calling for Safrin - but there was no time to pay respects to the goddess before she'd struck and disappeared once more. Alys made a mental note to leave an offering at a shrine if she made it out of this alive, then leapt into action again.
With her healing magic at the ready, just in case anyone needed it, she considered the rest of her arsenal. She wasn't confident that the yeti would fall for the same trick twice, so she veered away from her illusions, instead nocking an arrow and taking aim for the yeti's shoulder - trying to hit it close to where Melita and Safrin had struck, thinking that repeated strikes to the same area might weaken their opponent.

Alys fires an arrow at the yeti's shoulder, aiming for the same area as Melita and Safrin.

Multitudes occurred – Melita had just enough time to wave back to Ludo (and love the duck inspired outfit theming) before more embroiled and unfurled. Her head snapped to glance and hear – Safrin appearing and rendering more damage, and Sohalia getting way too close. “Get away from it!” She yelled, hoping the Attuned had a proper shift she could utilize, rather than putting herself directly by its legs.
But then she followed through on her own plans – tried and true methods from years of doing exactly this. She notched another fire arrow, drew back the string, and let fly once again; aiming for the same weakened spot – but content with any of it hitting.

because it takes a single wild ember to bring a whole wildfire to life
The Yeti reels as the icy spear from Safrin pierces its broad shoulder, the searing cold void energy intensifying the pain coursing through its massive frame. The creature's deep void eyes flare with a mix of anger and determination as it processes the unexpected assault with a snarl and snap of its teeth. Simultaneously, the Yeti senses the swift movements around it: Sohalia and Alys launch their attacks, the glaive and arrow singing harmlessly through the air as the creature ducks out of the way.
Before it can fully recover from Safrin’s assault, another arrow finds its mark. Melita 's second flaming projectile strikes true once more, embedding itself alongside the ice spear. The dual assault of fire and void energy disrupts the Yeti’s balance, causing a momentary lapse in its otherwise controlled demeanour. The guardian's breath forms thick, frosty tendrils as it struggles to maintain composure, the relentless cold exacerbating the wounds inflicted by the attacks.
Nearest to Sohalia, the Yeti's void-infused presence becomes almost intangible, blending with the swirling purple haze that blankets the Tundra. The creature's massive form looms closer, each step resonating with the dark energy that fuels its relentless pursuit. The Yeti pauses for a split second, assessing the weakened state of its adversaries: Zavien 's illusionary form already obliterated, Sohalia showing signs of struggle against the freezing conditions and nearer to it than Alys was.
With a final, powerful thrust, the Yeti unleashes a devastating swipe toward Sohalia, its claws aiming to end the threat once and for all. The combination of void energy and raw strength makes the attack a truly horrific thing, and as its claws slice through the Luminary's clothing to gouge her pristine skin, things go from bad to deadly in the span of seconds.

Void-Infused Yeti (Uncommon/Mythical): The Void-Infused Yeti is a colossal guardian standing over three meters tall, its formidable frame cloaked in thick, snow-white fur intertwined with swirling strands of ominous purple void energy. Intricate violet markings pulse softly across its broad shoulders and back, emanating an eerie glow that melds seamlessly with the void's swirling haze. Its eyes are deep voids, devoid of emotion yet radiating a chilling intelligence that pierces through the icy landscape. Massive, clawed hands grip the frozen tundra with ease, leaving indelible marks in the snow as it moves with deliberate, purposeful strides. Each breath it takes forms frosty mist in the frigid air, and tendrils of shadowy void energy trail from its mouth, draining warmth from its surroundings.

When he'd called out a warning to Soh, he hadn't really been expecting her to get closer to the deadly beast, but it seemed like nothing was really going to plan except Mel's fire blasts and Safrin's strike against it. As the goddess winked out of existence, he reminded himself to leave her a lot of offerings if when they made it out of this. Until then, he hoped she heard his prayer of infinite thanks.
The grateful feelings were dampened as Soh took a massive blow from the yeti. He grimaced, fearful that she might be dead from the amount of red splattering the snow but hoping and praying that she wasn't. "Soh! Get out of here!" There was a desperation in his voice this time, pleading her to run. Stormbreak still needed her (LOL). They couldn't afford to let her bleed out in the middle of the Tundra. Fully aware that the same thing might just happen to him, Zavien rushed forward with bravery and courage. "Alys! Can you cover me again?" He didn't know if she planned to help Soh or if she could do something similar to last time, but he knew that if the giant purple behemoth turned for him this round, things were not going to end well. But he pushed those thoughts aside, aiming for the vital backs of the yeti's legs with all his might along with the glowing starlight of Safrin's gift.

Things seemed to be going well. Safrin’s spear of ice connected, as did Melita’s flaming arrow. And even though Soh’s glaive strike slashed harmlessly through the air, she started to think that maybe, just maybe, they could all make it out of this with no more than a bit of frostbite.
Unfortunately for Soh, that thought didn’t last long.
Off-balance and slowed by the cold, the Luminary was unprepared for the strike leveled at her by the yeti - and, in truth, even if she’d been ready for it, it still would have hurt. The devastating blow sent her to her knees, pain exploding throughout her body and drawing a cry of pain from her lips. Everything hurt, more than she ever could have imagined being able to feel. It was blinding, paralyzing, and as she sat on her knees, bleeding into the snow from gouging wounds to her torso, she realized that she was going to die.
But she wasn’t ready to fall. Not yet. Not like this. And with one last agonizing wail, she willed herself to shift into her snowy owl form and attempt to fly away.

Alys watched, horrified, as Sohalia’s glaive missed its mark and threw the young woman off balance. The yeti, seemingly taking advantage, struck the Luminary square in the chest, sending her to her knees in the snow. Bright red spattered the purple-tinged landscape. Alys had known that they might fall in their efforts against the yeti, but it hadn’t been real before now. Now, suddenly, she felt very, very small and very, very frail.
Zavien shouted, and Alys took a step towards their fallen companion, intending to use her healing magic to revive her; but then Sohalia was shifting and lurching haphazardly into flight, out of the seer’s reach even if she could get over there in time.
With that plan out the window, Alys turned her attention to Zavien, who was now entirely too close to the yeti, if its strike against Soh had been any indication. ”Zavien!” she shouted desperately, reaching with her illusion magic to call another Zavien into existence again, sending it around to the yeti’s front in an effort to distract it. Her false Zavien brandished its sword, shouting loudly to draw the beast’s attention, and Alys focused on holding the illusion long enough - hopefully - for Sohalia to get clear and for the real Zavien to land a blow.

Gods – her teeth gnashed and gnarled together in the invisible display of frustration, shaking her head despite no one being able to see it. Maybe if she screeched. “Stop getting close to it!” She screamed across the tundra, irritated and annoyed that no one, save for Sohalia on her way to escaping (hopefully), seemed to be listening. She’d give them a task then. “Can you keep distracting it or heal up instead? I’ll take care of it!” And it wasn’t being an arrogant twit – she knew what she was capable of. And they kept putting themselves in the line of imminent danger.
Once more, she notched another fiery arrow, and sent it flying towards the yeti – intending to maul it, blow by blow by blow.

because it takes a single wild ember to bring a whole wildfire to life
The Void-Infused Yeti grunts as Zavien 's enchanted sword strikes its broad leg, the starlight absorbed by its void-touched fur. The creature feels the subtle vibration of the blade, but the dark energy within it absorbs most of the impact, leaving only a faint sting that does little to slow its relentless advance.
Alys ’s illusionary Zavien flickers before the Yeti’s gaze, a deceptive mirage designed to distract, which, it does. Snarling, Sohalia is able to disappear as nothing more than a blur of white. Rather than remaining distracted, the guardian's attention snaps back to the real Zavien; while Alys's illusion might have smelled and seemed real, one one of the dragoon's had just injured it.
Melita 's arrows continue to find their marks, each fiery projectile embedding itself deeper into the Yeti's shoulder, the combination of fire and void energy starting to take a toll on the once-unyielding guardian.
The Yeti pivots sharply, eyes locked upon Zavien who stood not but a sword's length away. With a swift, calculated motion, the Yeti unleashes a devastating swipe aimed directly at the dragoon. The sheer force of the attack rends through the frigid air, the massive claws gouging deep into Zavien ’s side but curling upward
Blood splatters across the purple-tinged snow.
Standing over the fallen dragoon, the Yeti lets out a thunderous roar that echoes across the desolate Tundra, a final testament to its unwavering duty. Spinning, with only Alys visible, the yeti's jaws part as it releases an ice-shaking roar.

He knew it was a risk. Yet he'd come anyways. He'd kissed Lena one last time and made sure Sol was safe. He'd used everything he could to help, including putting himself within range of the yeti's deadly strikes.
So as the blow came for him, Zavien didn't fight the fear, embracing it as a sign of his humanity and what he'd been able to accomplish. His heart broke for his companion, who would be condemned to a life crushing grief. The poor dragon didn't deserve this, but all things considered, he'd come farther than he ever thought he would. Just a year ago, he felt alone, like it was him against the world, like he wouldn't amount to anything. He'd always dreamed of being a Dragoon, of helping people, of making a difference. Koa had given him that and so much more. He'd found a family with the Dragoons and everyone he'd met along the way. They'd helped him hone the skills he'd been developing his whole life and shown him what it meant to be a team, laughing and smiling through it all. He'd miss them; but he'd miss Lena's smiling face the most. He hoped they'd care for her with him gone. She was strong, but he hoped they'd help her move past this, to help her smile again.
The claws hooked against his side in a bleary moment of pain. His lungs filled with blood as they drove him up into the air, a sputtering cough of red wracking his body. He should be feeling more. More pain. More fear. Yet all he felt was a cold numbness, a mercy against the ripping and tearing of his body. Maybe it was peace? The snowy owl flew away while the yeti was struggling against Mel's bombardment of fiery arrows and Alys had been far enough away to avoid the slash. They were powerful women, but Zavien still sent up one last prayer in hopes that the gods might send them strength.
In the end, he was happy. And as the breath left him and the darkness came, there was a soft smile upon his bloody lips.
”Zavien!” Alys shouted again, anguish in her voice, but it was too late - her illusion did nothing to deter the monster, and it shredded the dragoon without a second thought. As Sohalia made it into the sky and away, heading back towards the Citadel, Zavien fell - and stayed down.
And then there were two.
Melita was still running around invisible, leaving Alys as the only target. And she wasn’t keen on joining Zavien in Mort’s halls, so the seer summoned her illusion magic once more to split herself in two. Then she and her illusion turned and ran, both taking slightly different paths to spread apart but both running away from the beast.
She wasn’t proud of her decision to flee, but what else could she do? Her arrows had proven ineffective at best, and her magic would hardly allow her to survive a hit like the one that had just taken out Zavien. The Luminary was gone, the dragoon was dead, and without more support…
If she couldn’t escape, at least she could distract the yeti, giving it multiple targets to chase and drawing its attention from Melita, who seemed to be the only one with even a prayer of killing it.

And just as Melita had feared, there was only so much luck, and fortune hadn’t favored the Dragoon.
A raucous fuck nearly went past her lips, but she stayed motionless and still against the tide of bombardments and memories, and now interloping, new ones, fixating on the target itself. Fuck the Family and fuck the whole fucking nonsense.
At least Alys listened. Gone or not gone, illusions poofing into the midst.
Melita, of course, wasn’t going anywhere.
Just you and me, dickhead, she thought, loosening another breath as her hands shook under invisible means and veils – through rage or sorrow, she couldn’t be certain. It didn’t really matter right now. Taking hold of her bow and another flaming arrow, she repeated the same lines as before, notching and firing at its shoulder, committed to the cause.

because it takes a single wild ember to bring a whole wildfire to life
As Alys conjures her illusionary duplicate and begins to flee across the treacherous tundra, the Void-Infused Yeti’s keen senses detect the subtle shift in the void energy. Its deep violet eyes narrow, tracking the deceptive movement with unwavering focus. The Yeti lumbers forward, its massive form cutting through the swirling purple haze that blankets the landscape, intent on neutralizing the perceived threat. The Yeti’s enhanced perception, however, fails to discern the faint inconsistencies in the illusion’s aura. With a powerful swipe of its enormous claws, the Yeti lashes out toward the fleeing figure, tearing through thin air where the fake Alys stands moments before. Frustration etches across the guardian’s visage as it realizes the deception, its resonant growl echoing across the frozen wasteland.
Before the Yeti can fully recover from the failed attack, Melita releases another flaming arrow. The projectile arcs through the frigid air, striking the Yeti’s shoulder once more. The searing heat clashes violently with the surrounding cold, causing the Yeti to stagger. Its thick, snow-white fur chars where the arrow embeds itself, smoke wafting from the wound as violet blood pours down its coat.
Grimacing in pain, the Yeti’s focus sharpens on the only threat it was able to see. No longer distracted by illusions, it locks its piercing void eyes onto Alys. Determined to prevent further tricks, the guardian rears back, muscles tensing beneath its fur in preparation for a decisive strike.

The illusion worked, but not well enough; as Alys attempted to flee, her illusion caught the wrath of the yeti, but she wasn't fast enough to get away, and with Melita still invisible, she was a sitting duck in the snow.
If she couldn't escape, she was dead.
So she called upon her magic once more, dragging a new illusion and splitting it from herself once more. This time, she ran one way and sent the illusion the other, hoping that a fifty-fifty chance of survival would be enough - and would give Melita time to strike again. Maybe this time she would have enough time to escape.
From somewhere in the snow, Sascha rushed to the forefront, placing herself squarely in front of the yeti. She roared - a meager attempt in comparison to the yeti's snarling howls - and then ran after the illusion-Alys, hoping to trick the beast into thinking that was the real one. And if she died for her bonded, then it would have been a life well-spent.

The confusion remained upon the yeti’s features, and while Alys was still striving to escape (later, she might be horrified by the companion racing out, further glad hers had been left behind), Melita had her sights set on the kill. She wanted nothing more than to rip and tear the massive beast apart, limb from limb, with every fiber of her malicious, vicious anger – for killing Zavien, for infecting the only region capable of healing them, for all the other nuances of bullying audacity that had fallen into place. Her uncle being manipulated; probably scores of others they didn’t even know or realize…
And the Honeybee had always known exactly how to channel her rage.
Hopefully one more would do it – all embers and flames and hatred and ambition, plunging along her bow and arrows, notching, aiming, and firing, straight at the beast once more.
