Stories of the Mathair had always delighted Lena as a child. From trees, to goddesses, to something divine and spellbinding, she’d flipped through pages upon pages of the written tomes, mapping out the illustrations and reviewing them when she had the time. But to behold it now was something abstract and bewildering on its own; from the gnarled roots encased all around the land, to the deadly, carnivorous plants nearby.
While Mittens growled and hissed at fly traps, the Caretaker meandered her way in grace and elegance along the trunk’s system, mesmerized. “What a place,” she whispered to Rhiannon., wondering if she should be setting some offerings down as well.
The Mathair was bigger than Rhiannon had imagined. It had the feel of something ancient and powerful, and the soldier shivered faintly as they approached, her gaze jumping from the massive tree roots to the branches spanning overhead in awe. Surrounding the tree were myriad carnivorous plants, colorful and deadly, offering a siren's song to nearby prey.
When Lena whispered to her, the soldier started. She'd almost forgotten that the Caretaker accompanied her, and the reminder was stark. "I've never seen anything like it." Rhiannon's voice, too, was a whisper, as though afraid to disturb the ancient forces that had taken root in the great tree.

“Mm. The stories are numerous too.” She grinned softly, before making her way around the roots, picking through leaf litter and bramble. Her hopes were pinned solely upon flowers nowadays, scattering the bits and pieces of yesteryear’s soil by lightly combing through pine needles or loam, fallen portions of season’s arrangements, determined to find a speck of something. “It never suits to cross the Mathair,” she whispered, humming and repeating verses she’d heard ever since she was a child. “Nor get in her path when she’s hungry.”
Leaving those implications there, the Caretaker warned Mittens away from another fly trap, to which the snowball rolled its eyes, but floated and hovered around, either seemingly glancing for the roses too, or finding other things to mess and trouble with.
Stories were indeed numerous, even in Halo - not only about the deity of Leafchange, but about the tree that shared her name. Rhiannon grinned in response as she began to hunt for flowers around the Mathair's roots, choosing the direction opposite Lena. If they worked together, they could each go one way and meet up around the other side of the great tree - and until they were too far apart to hear each other, they could whisper into the quiet.
"Have you ever seen her?" Rhi asked across the chasm growing between them, her eyes peeled for the slightest look of a rose. She herself had only run across Safrin - a meeting that, while overall positive, still made her cringe at her own audacity. Oh, and Ludo, that time at the Festival of Lights, but that scarcely counted, given that she'd only seen it in passing.

“No,” Lena shook her head, hands on her hips as she paused, staring at a particularly large patch of bramble and thorns, then beginning to peer in, to come up ultimately empty. “Have you?” She wasn’t certain on Rhiannon’s sense of adventure or accomplishments across the venues and worlds – she could’ve very well have experienced the meeting of seasonal deities.
The Caretaker’s favorite was, of course, Nature Frey, but had met Safrin on wondrous occasions, as well as brief glances of Tanau. She might’ve imparted some stories, if the hybrid was willing, but was otherwise distracted, hopes turning into dashed formations as naught was to be found. “I don’t see anything here,” she murmured. “Do you want to try somewhere else?” She thought of the Sidhe Village, the Bodega, portions of the Observatory that might have a fondness for certain and particular flowers. Worth the journey on several parts, at least.
