Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.

Rhiannon followed Sohalia through the Wildwood. The trees of Ludo's Wood fell away, revealing a large, ancient tree that Rhi recognized from her last trip to the Greatwood. Last time, she'd explored with Lena, and the woman hadn't stopped asking her questions the entire time they'd searched for Vi's Roses. This time, it was Rhi's turn to ask the questions. "So," she said to Soh as the grew closer to the Mathair. "Where are you from?"
She didn't see any sign of any flowers, but never having seen one before, she was inclined to double check her path. Her dark gaze scanned the roots around them, searching for any hint of gold. If the stories she'd heard were to be believed, Vi's roses would have thorns and stems of gold, which she hoped would stand out against the dark forest floor.

Sohalia led the way through the woods, enjoying the feel of the spring breeze on her face. She'd worn her hair back in a simple plait today, but a few tendrils stirred where they'd escaped from the braid. She brushed one out of her eyes as she skimmed her gaze along the roots of the Mathair.
"Originally? The Hollowed Grounds," she replied to Rhiannon, content to chat with the soldier as they hunted Vi's Roses. "But I made my home in Stormbreak, before the Family rose to power. Now I live in Torchline." She didn't say anything about being the Heart of Stormbreak; if Rhiannon hadn't heard of her, she honestly preferred not to share that part of her history. People seemed to treat her differently when they knew who she'd been, and expect greater things of her as a result.

Rhiannon’s gaze caught for a moment on Soh’s face as she brushed an errant strand of hair out of her eyes. Even with the burn scar peeking out from beneath the woman’s shirt, she was really quite pretty. Rhiannon wondered where such a scar had come from, what trials the Luminary had faced in her life to leave such a lasting mark. The soldier returned her eyes to the ground. She wasn’t here to admire the scenery - or the company, for that matter. She was here to find Vi’s Roses, and then she’d take it home to Deimos or die trying.
”Torchline’s nice,” Rhi said conversationally, filing away the information about Sohalia so that she might learn more about the Luminary later. ”I’ve been a few times. Weather’s always nice - better than Halo, at any rate,” she added with a chuckle. She loved her home, and she was used to the cold, but something about the warm beaches of Torchline appealed to her all the same.

Soh was unaware of the soldier’s eyes on her, her own gaze trained as it was on the roots surrounding them. She, unlike Rhiannon, had no idea what she would do once she found a Vi’s Roses - that is, if she could find one. She knew they could be used to cleanse the Void, but she also knew that she wasn’t prepared to be a part of that cleansing, her wounds from the Void yeti still too new and too deep. Perhaps that made her a coward, but she liked to think that she was being pragmatic.
At Rhiannon’s chuckle, Soh smiled. ”It is nice. I have friends there, so it’s… well, it’s not home, but it’s a close second.” Once upon a time, before she’d been queen of Stormbreak, she’d thought about moving there to be with Jude and Harper. Nowadays, the memory was bittersweet, With Harper gone and Jude somewhere in Stormbreak with the Carpenters, she hardly had a reason to live in Torchline aside from having a safe place to get back on her feet.

Rhiannon hummed her agreement with Sohalia’s assessment of Torchline. While the soldier couldn’t exactly relate, she thought she understood from Soh’s description that the Luminary missed her home region. Perhaps one day - when her name wasn’t plastered across the broadcasts from Vox - she’d be able to return.
They searched through the afternoon and came up empty. Again. Rhiannon was disappointed. Somehow she’d thought that after all this effort, someone would have found something, but it seemed that the flowers they sought were exceedingly rare. They would have to keep hunting, but as the sun sank lower in the sky, she accepted that they would have to do so another day.
