Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.
Congratulations, Niki!

It’s another give and another take. The rain falls and soothes the worst of the cuts, the wounds piecing together just enough to allow him a second to breathe while the rest of the group worked to try and chase after the wyrm. He watches as moonlight brightens the tunnel for a moment, finding nothing in the wound Deimos had created, and Sunjata takes one step forward before everything starts to scream again.
Hunching back to try and protect the box with the lily, he takes the brunt of one of the slabs of rock – glancing at his shoulder and sending him staggering. Cursing loudly while his shoulder throbs in pain, the Flood sucks in a sharp breath. This isn’t working. We need to figure out where it is. He hisses, stepping forward and feeling relatively unsteady, he reaches Hadama’s side. I’m gonna use my dome and maybe we can have a second to look and heal. With a pulse of apology sent toward Deimos – wishing his dome could protect more of them, he isn’t stupid in knowing that Deimos was the strongest out of all of them. And maybe it would give them a moment to heal more so that they could withstand another second of assaults.
Standing next to Hadama, Sunjata draws up his dome – the water rising up around him and Hadama, encasing them in a protective hemisphere of water, hoping that it gave them a momentary break from the Mirewyrm’s attacks.
Sunjata moves up beside Hadama and draws up his Hydrodome to try and protect them from the rocks for this round.
Magic: Hydrodome | Draws a dome of water up around Sunjata and one another, protecting them from attacks and environmental effects for one round. Lasts for 1 post, requires a 2-post cooldown.

The results seemed to be much the same: emptiness, then rocks clattering, shifting down upon them no matter how many times he tried to stabilize the area. As the dome went up, not over himself, he nodded in understanding, figuring the full brunt would be down upon him soon enough anyway.
But all they needed was one more gods damned hit.
Taking in a breath, he agreed with the sentiments – they weren’t getting anywhere with the current tactics. I can try.
Then he strived to use his Intuition, attempting to gauge the location of the creature – glancing at the ground, wondering if there were patterns to the movements and motions – anything to give them some clarity in the murk and treachery.

The rain fell and Hadama tipped his head upwards to feel it sluicing over his skin, cutting runnels through the red left by the falling rocks. He drew in a breath as Deimos held the ground stable--
And then the world rocked around them again, and into him and Sunjata, and the Tidebreaker staggered and leaned into Sunjata for balance. The dome went up around them and he reached deep for moonlight once more, taking solace from knowing that it was there within him, even if the cavern around them was dark and violet. Moonlight to heal this time, as he exhaled and looked around them grimly at the closing tunnels and the damage that continued to rain down upon them.
Deimos, Sunjata and I cannot take many more hits like that. Though it burned like fire to admit such weakness when the Mirewyrm was even more badly damaged. But it was hiding from them, perfectly content to rain down death far beyond their reach while they had no means to reach it. I have an idea for how to deal with it. But we will need to regroup while the Lily is still safe. If we cannot find it in the next few seconds, I suggest we retreat for today. Hadama uses his Turn the Tide ability to heal the team and suggests a tactical retreat for now.

the descent
The dome rose with a hiss of gathering water, folding over Sunjata and Hadama like a held breath. Within, the world fell briefly quiet—just the muted rush of fluid walls and the pulsing light of moon magic stitching flesh and bone together once more. The air was still tainted, but not deadly, and the pressure in Sunjata’s shoulder ebbed enough for him to hold the box close again without wincing.
Outside, Deimos remained in the open, a sentinel carved from will and stubbornness. Blood ran freely down one side, smeared into the grit of his armour, but his stance never wavered. He breathed deep, reaching with that honed sixth sense, trying to feel not just the tremors but the patterns. The rock told stories in fractures and fault lines. The heaving of the walls, the stagger of falling stones—there was something moving beneath them still, like a leviathan circling its prey from below.
Not gone. Not far.
Just… watching.
Then the Mirewyrm struck again.
A groaning tremor built in the earth, then another cascade of rubble sheared from the ceiling. Smaller this time—an avalanche, not a collapse—but sharp and fast, deadly in its precision. The dome held. Sunjata’s magic hardened with instinct, and the stones that fell against it struck like fists on glass, then slid off in harmless rivulets, deflected into the cavern floor with hissing impacts.
Outside, Deimos moved. He read the rumble before it hit, twisting away just as a jagged chunk slammed into the ground where he’d stood, his intuition guiding him in the half-second gap between life and death.
And then, stillness again.

Mirewyrm: The Mirewyrm is a colossal void entity, vaguely serpentine and dragonlike, that tunnels through stone as though the rock were liquid. Its body is plated in black, semi-metallic scales that shimmer with deep-space reflections, constantly shifting and rearranging like something unfinished. It has no eyes, and its mouth opens sideways in a jagged, spiral maw—a gateway rather than a mouth, lined not with teeth, but with coiling tendrils of voidlight and gravity.

Water rises, and to which Sunjata exhales a breath of relief. Encompassing himself and Hadama, he feels the pulse of understanding from Deimos as well as the moonlit healing from the Tidebreaker. He tucks the box containing the lily closer to his chest, protective as he feels the earth tremble again, jaw gritting as he forces his dome to hold, exhaling with some relief as the rocks slide off and they’re left unharmed for the moment.
As the dome falls away and exhaustion and pain linger in the back of Sunjata’s mind, he glances toward Deimos and Hadama in turn, trying to think. And think quickly. I can see if there’s a safe path..? To retreat to, or find some semblance of safety.
He takes this moment to look, trying to scan through the alleviated gasses for a pathway unburdened by unsteady walls within this wound of Starfall, his steps guiding him back toward the direction they’d come from.
Sunjata uses his INT 3 to try and look for a safer way to get through the tunnels and begins to head back in the direction they’d come from.

The information they received in return was frustrating – and galvanizing for the next iterations to come. With no way, currently, to track it underneath and its strength far beyond his own capabilities, perhaps they’d be able to come up with a lure. Or at least, try and bait it into coming towards them, above the surface, where it wasn’t as fast or capable, and they could finalize the damage necessary.
Beginning to move back the way they’d come with the rest of the group, he nodded, and persisted through the bond. I can stabilize again. True to his word, he flared out the Mastered Earth abilities – intending to ensure strength, steadiness, and firmness in the cavern around them.

A tactical withdrawal seemed wise. They were not yet ready to retreat, but if they could draw the wyrm after them, closer to the surface, they might yet be able to drag something from the jaws of defeat that were closing in around them.
If there is something that would lure it closer to us... His thoughts turned pensive, trying to take what they had seen of the wyrm - of that first shadow serpent, its runes and behavior - and of the tunnels around them that the great beast had dug to discern what it might find irresistible enough to draw within their ranges again.
He moved back with the other men, heading towards the surface so that at least it would be closer if they did need to retreat in truth. Hadama begins to head back up the tunnels with Deimos and Sunjata, and uses his INT 1 to try and figure out what they could use to bait the mirewyrm to come close to them again.

Sunjata ’s dome slipped away, leaving the air sharp against their skin once more, but the worst of the wounds had mended under moonlight and rain. The box containing the lily was secured against his chest, guarded as fiercely as breath itself. His eyes scanned the path ahead, gauging the slope of the corridor, watching for loose stone, unstable ledges—a way out. Or at least a place to breathe.
Deimos moved beside him, steady despite the aches and weight of failure biting at their heels. His magic worked like a surgeon’s hand across the terrain, reinforcing stone with practiced will. Cracks sealed. Floors leveled. The tunnel no longer felt like a beast’s throat about to swallow them whole—just for the moment.
Behind them, Hadama ’s mind worked even as his feet did, trying to unravel the logic of the Mirewyrm’s movements, of the runes and the earlier serpent. What had it wanted? What had drawn it up at all? If they could find a thread, a bait, a pressure point, they might yet finish this on their terms.
But the wyrm wasn’t done.
Not yet.
From deep below, the fissure exhaled again—not with a tremor, not with another strike, but with gas.
It came fast this time. No warning groan. No shudder of stone. Just a sudden hiss, and then the miasma poured back into the chamber like floodwater. Denser now. Thicker. The smell hit first—acrid and rotting, like burning hair and spoiled meat—and then vision blurred again as the gas obscured everything in a smothering violet haze.
Even the bioluminescence dimmed, overwhelmed by the choking cloud.
Their gas masks filtered the worst of it, but movement became difficult. The air grew heavy. Every breath, though protected, felt like inhaling lead. Sound dulled, pressure built behind their eyes. And through the haze… nothing. No movement. No pursuit.
The Mirewyrm didn’t need to see them to attack.
It only needed to wait.

He looks, scanning through the corridor of rock and bone and bioluminescent fungi to find what appears to be relatively straight forward. Back up the way they came, down further into the unknown, and the varying tunnels the Mirewyrm had vanished in. He takes a slow inhale to steady himself, precisely about the time that the hiss occurs.
He squints, trying to block out most of the gas from reaching his eyes to no avail, gritting his teeth. Let’s plant the lily here and next time we’ll be better prepared to finish the wyrm and whatever else is in the next section.. Hopefully. The decision is made decisively, unable to truly glance over at Hadama and Deimos but hoping that the sensation of his determination might help them think it’s a good idea.
So, the Flood drops to a crouch, hands partially shifting into that of his draconic shift to carve through the rock and grit beneath them, digging a hole so he can plant the lily.
Sunjata drops down and partially shifts his hands to his dragon shift and plants the lily there.

That is fine, he accepted and agreed as the gas mired through again. The whole venture would be somewhat successful – with likely more monsters on the follow-up course. But they’d be able to go back with more information, opportunities, and potential. Shifting his attention to Hadama, and knowing they’d be trying to do something else before they parted, he meandered through the bond again. I can stabilize once more. Do you want me to take the crystal? If so, he’d be available, while orchestrating the same means and measures as before.
Striving to not be so wholly bothered by the miasma (willful, determined, steadfast, frustrated all the same) around them, he strived for the solidified forces again, notching further into his Mastered Earth, intending to continue affirming the loam around them. Perhaps it would help the lily be entrenched into the folds further as well.

A moment of peace. Maybe not to breathe - not with the poison gas filling the air once more, but thankfully Deimos's gas masks prevented the gas from doing worse damage to their lungs. Sunjata moved quickly and Hadama looked over in surprise as the Lilly was removed from its box. But this was as good a place as any, and he nodded in understanding. Agreed.
Deimos's offer was met with a moment of thought only before Hadama acquiesced. Yes. I will try to collect another. We will need it, eventually. He handed over the first crystal they had collected and then jammed his trident into the wall to try and free a second crystal.
And perhaps to draw the wyrm back into their range, if it could sense the removal of these pieces of Starfall from its demesne.
Hadama hands his crystal to Deimos and then attempts to free a second crystal from the wall with his trident while Sunjata is planting. He's testing to see if removing another crystal will draw the wyrm back to them.

The gas thickened, curling through the air like a living thing, wrapping around limbs and memories alike. Sunjata 's eyes burned despite the mask, vision tunneling as he crouched low, shifting fingers into draconic claws to cut through the stone. The grit gave reluctantly, the earth protesting even this small act of intrusion. Deimos ’s magic shored up the tunnel once more, smoothing the floor around the hole and reinforcing the craggy wall behind it, a silent bulwark against further collapse. Then Sunjata lowered the Rae’s Lily into the shallow cradle of stone.
And watched it wilt.
The moment its petals touched the open air, exposed to the noxious rot of the Mirewyrm’s exhalation, the flower began to wither. Gold bled to brown. The edges curled, once supple and radiant, now crisp and ruined. The bloom sagged, leaning toward the rock as if in mourning.
Even so, the Lily’s fading aura pulsed outward like the memory of sunlight in a drowned cave, driving the corruption back just far enough to briefly silence the mirewyrm.
Above them, Hadama worked, his trident biting into the wall again. The crystal screamed faintly in response—high-pitched and distant, like a star dying on the far side of the sky. The pressure below stirred in kind, and all three of them felt the Mirewyrm shift—ready, waiting, watching—but still it held back.

Watching through the gasses as they burn his eyes, he lowers the lily into the stone he’d carved out, only to watch as the brilliant petals of the lily begin to curl and turn brown. Hissing out a curse through the mask, the Flood grits his teeth and sends his thoughts down the attuned bond, clearly with a shake of panic coursing through it.
Clear the air! It’s wilting!” Panic settles further, but he’s determined that if Deimos clears the air then the planting would go without issue and perhaps getting it secured would cause it to revitalize in the meantime, to fix the wilting in progress. So, Sunjata continues to plant the lily as quickly as he can, hoping that purifying the air will save the precious plant.

Putting the void crystal into safekeeping amidst his bag of holding, he supposed he hadn’t anticipated the issue concerning the lily. In every instance they’d ever encountered with the flowers, they had purified. From disease. From blight. From the void. So when it couldn’t do the same with the poison and miasma around them – his eyes widened, then narrowed back into the notions and perils.
He knew what to try before the Flood said anything, but he gave a committed nod nonetheless. He’d have to give way the earth proportions, but it was vital and necessary at this juncture – so he unfurled the manifested portions of Mastered Air throughout the area, intending to clear the toxins away.
