"You don't get it," Jack says softly, the ice at his feet melting into water that soaks greedily into the already waterlogged docks. "You still don't get it. We could've done anythin', if you'd included me. Could've worked any plan, toppled any giant squattin' up there in Stormbreak. But you didn't. And I don't feel safe, Flora." Shaking his head, the captain takes a deep breath and steels himself against the riptide of her floundering emotions, bricking himself off from them lest he fall victim to any further outbursts of his own.
Already half turned away, he pauses as the soft rasp of her voice reaches him, glancing briefly back over his shoulder at her. "I didn't want you to go either," he says with a quick, sad smile. "But you didn't tell me about it, so I didn't get the chance to say anything."
And Jack does go, then, his footsteps soft once again on the boardwalk beneath his feet, his silhouette vanishing into the dark like a slip of shadow flickering in the light of a few small and guttering lanterns.
