"That's true," Lyra says, admiring the greenery that arches overhead. The leaves here are so vibrant, and shaped so differently from those back home. "But by recording what happened, it's possible to prevent more deaths in the future." By keeping records, they could advise when the surf was too strong, for example, or post notices about dangerous wildlife. It might not sound like as glorious a job as search and rescue, but it is no less important in Lyra's eyes.
Once they've each bought a hot drink and a snack, Lyra wraps her fingers around her cup and hums thoughtfully. "I think we all do what we can. Everyone has something to contribute, don't you think? And - what's it called, the butterfly effect? Where even something small can start a chain reaction with massive consequences? Surely that applies just as much to doing what good we can as it does to bad things?" She shrugs, smiling at Maea. "Sorry - I didn't mean to get quite so philosophical," she adds with a laugh.
They spend the afternoon touring and conversing, and Lyra finds that she enjoys the Greatwood.
