the crush
The tunnel tightened.

Sah 's magic rippled through the earth like a slow exhale, stone groaning softly as it reshaped around them. Six feet became five. Then four. Then three. The weight of the island pressed down from above, squeezing them into a single-file crawlspace that felt less like a path and more like a throat, though it would allow them to progress further.

And then the earth screamed.

It was soundless—felt more than heard—as the floor in front of them ruptured, exploding outward in a geyser of shattered stone and violet mist. A gulf yawned open, fifteen feet across, jagged and smoking, cutting their path forward clean in two, and from below, the Mirewyrm rose.

Massive, hide-black, and shimmering with the glint of distant galaxies across its scales, it didn’t so much climb as unfurl, its spiralled maw opening across a skull that still bore no eyes. It didn’t need them. It knew.

The second it breached, its head turned—impossibly fast—and the spiral split wide.  focused beam of voidlight blasted forward.

Hadama would only have enough time to look up before it struck, a brilliant lance of white-violet cutting through the tunnel and slamming directly into his chest. The blast lit the space like lightning, burning shadows into the walls, shaking dust from the ceiling. The impact hurled the Tidebreaker backward into Noah, armour scorched and useless against this, air ripped from his lungs as he slammed into the narrow stone behind him.

Your randomly assigned posting order is Hadama, Jack, Noah, then Sah. You have 24 hrs to reply.

Hadama HP: 657/800
Jack HP: 300/300
Noah HP: 580/580
Sah HP: 610/610

Mirewyrm: 888/888

Remember to include a summary at the bottom of your post with all action taken. If weapons/upgrades/abilities/items/shifts/etc are used, please include their desc. from your profile at the bottom of your post as well.

REMEMBER: KQs are rewarding but dangerous. They may cause death and/or permanent changes to your characters.

Mirewyrm (Rare):  The Mirewyrm is a colossal void entity, vaguely serpentine and dragonlike, that tunnels through stone as though the rock were liquid. Its body is plated in black, semi-metallic scales that shimmer with deep-space reflections, constantly shifting and rearranging like something unfinished. It has no eyes, and its mouth opens sideways in a jagged, spiral maw—a gateway rather than a mouth, lined not with teeth, but with coiling tendrils of voidlight and gravity.

Whether or not it was spiders was yet to be seen, but Hadama quietly regained his feet while the others offered their plans and opinions. He deferred to the experience of the Abandoned in the use of their magic and simply stepped to the front in his feathered armor as Sah shifted the earth and reduced their space further. All the while he looked ahead, as far as the glimmers of light from his trident would allow.

But as Noah predicted, the Void wasted no further time in coming to them.

The earth cracked and yawned, disgorging a maw that Hadama knew well. It struck first and it struck hard, the Tidebreaker hissing a broken wheeze as the air was knocked from his lungs. Feathers scorched and the flesh it covered bruised and bled beneath the assault as he was flung back into Noah's supportive bulk. He did not try to keep his feet, however, letting himself fall to a knee to clear the way for his fellow demigod behind him.

And emerald eyes locked on to the Mirewyrm with the grim determination of a lesson learned last time they had met. Into that split Maw and down that descending gullet he summoned all the weight of his Gravity Spikes in quick succession, four hammering blows. And then, digging deep into his soul for Safrin's blessing, he did it again, disinclined to allow his foe to escape a second time.

Hadama falls to one knee to clear space for Noah to fire past/over him and uses his Gravity Spike+Singularity against the Mirewyrm. Then he activates his Time Dilation Feat and does it again.

JACK

It all goes to hell in a handbasket rather neatly, in Jack's view. Not that his view is all that wide, given the sudden squeeze of their single-file procession, but with his telepathy unfortunately all too wired to their collective thoughts, he has a front row seat to the shitshow.

Flinching, not at the sudden and chaotic eruption of earth or the mirewyrm's colossal appearance, but at the pain that suddenly crackles through Hadama, the captain is forced to slam down a few mental shields to keep it from racking through his own body. Hissing out a curse, and realising that anything he does is guaranteed to have to plough through the men in front of him, Jack instead turns to face the rear.

Inhaling deeply and letting the breath out again, he releases a wave of ice magic back out to the main tunnel, covering the webbing and earth with a layer of slick ice. At least if something tries to scuttle up through that nasty little hole back there, it will struggle for purchase.

Opting not to risk friendly fire (I know, right?), Jack instead turns and uses Mastered Water to cover the tunnel behind them (the one coated in webbing) with a layer of slippery ice!

Water manipulation (Abandoned/Hybrid): Can create and control water. Must be within a 30ft radius.

The Forsaken

It came sudden and fast. Noah’s heart lurched in his chest and he prepared for the onslaught as quickly as he could — which there was little time. The tunnel split and the island shuddered. The creature rose from the depths and attacked Hadama without hesitation.

Noah solidified his footing as the massive demigod stumbled back into him. The king let his body go down, however, and Noah knew why. He did not turn to see what Sah and Jack would do behind him, but instead kept his focus ahead. And attacked.

Light cascaded in the throat-like tunnel as his spirit stag appeared before the group and charged immediately ahead, large head bowed and sunlight antlers aimed to stab the void creature and deal a slap of Vi’s power.

Noah summons his spirit stag (in front of the group) to charge the mirewyrm.

Sah

Sah's eyes widened as the wyrm made its sudden entrance, cursing under his breath as it struck Hadama. The creature matched the sketch Deimos had shown him, but only just. No drawing could possibly have matched the horrifying jaws before them. Its scream still rang in his ears as the group mobilized.

As much as the Wild Thunder wished to join the Demi-gods in attacking, the threat of friendly fire was too high from his place in the middle. Eyes narrowing, the hybrid drew on his earth magic again. Taking advantage of the hole left by the wyrm, he widened the team's tunnel, shoving the excess earth into the pit.

Sah uses his earth magic to widen the tunnel and give the team more room to fight. The dirt he moves is shoved into the pit created by the wyrm. He is still partially shifted.

the crush
The tunnel shook again, the pressure of Hadama ’s retaliation hammering forward like falling stars. Eight gravity spikes crashed into the Mirewyrm’s spiralled maw and throat in merciless succession, bursting against its void-forged flesh with a sickening crack and a shimmer of collapsing light. The creature reared, twisting violently, its body coiling like a ruptured cable as voidlight sputtered across its cracked plates. Its shriek was felt more than heard—vibrating the stone, rattling bones.

But it wasn’t dead.

The stag of sunlight came charging next, Vi’s presence glowing fierce and righteous, but the wyrm twisted just in time. The spirit crashed past with a ripple of light, missing its mark as the creature’s spiralled mouth opened wide once more. It didn’t aim for the demigod who had nearly ended it.

It aimed for the one who had missed.

A second beam of voidlight lashed forward, narrow but devastating. It slammed into Noah 's chest, tearing him from his footing and hurling him backward down the widened tunnel. The force knocked him into the stone wall with a grunt and a flash of pain before the Mirewyrm, wounded and furious, twisted its body and vanished—a snake slipping into water. It dove back into the earth, leaving behind a shattered, smoking gulf and a stench of scorched stone.

But the danger wasn’t over. Behind them, where Jack stood guarding the rear, it emerged, folding into their reality like peeling back skin: the Webvex. The void-spider spilled from a slit in the universe like ink from a wound, translucent limbs dragging across stone with jerky, twitching grace. Its hundreds of eyes blinked out of sync, watching everything.

It struck fast.

Before a word could be spoken, before magic could be summoned, a bolt of void-webbing burst from its spinneret—thick, glimmering strands of black-silver that coiled around Sah with unnatural precision. It locked his arms to his sides, snapped across his throat and chest, binding him tight. And worse, his magic would go silent.

The tunnel's humming pulse faded from his thoughts. His earth magic, so recently wielded, slipped from his fingers like water. The webbing pulsed with suppressive power, nullifying his connection to the source. And the Webvex clicked once, mandibles twitching, before vanishing again in a ripple of ethereal mist.

Your randomly assigned posting order is Hadama, Jack, Noah, then Sah. You have 24 hrs to reply.

Where a face should be is a single, spiralling maw that consumes sound, memory, and reason. It spins crystalline void-webs that cling to magic, thought, and flesh alike.

Noah caught him, solid and strong at his back, but there was no time for gratitude. And, for a brief moment of light and fire it seemed as though they would actually have a chance--

But the Wyrm turned, the stag missed, and the mistakes of the previous foray played out like a bad dream in front of the King's eyes a second time as the Wyrm lashed out once more before turning. Diving.

Out of sight. Out of reach.

Hadama reached back to steady Noah, but his eyes remained where the Wyrm had vanished, a slow rise of something relentless coiling up from deep in his chest, driving him to dive ahead. To finish what he had started.

But he was no hotblooded young bull. Not anymore. He breathed deep and held himself still, considering their choices as a team. He was granted a second, perhaps less, before something new and terrible appeared behind them. Still kneeling, he looked around his allies at the new nightmare and could do nothing but watch as it launched its webbing at Sah.

Unfortunate.

He spoke quietly, pitching his voice low and firm to be heard only by those within a few feet of him as he stood. "If you can hit the Wyrm again, do so. I will heal any damage we may take as a result." His jaw was tense enough that it was a wonder his molars did not crack. "Next it will shake the earth, try to bring the stone down on us. Sah, stabilize the tunnel, if you can." It had seemed possible in the previous tunnel when he examined it for an Abandoned of Sah’s strength to keep it whole even against the Wyrm’s tantrums.

He might not know that Sah’s magic was sealed, but he did not want their earth mage distracted by bonds. Taking stock of this new threat, Hadama gathered together what he knew of his allies’ strengths and spoke again as he focused his strength and every ounce of precision he possessed to send a single, pinpoint gravity spike crashing down along the edge of the webbing binding Sah’s chest and arms to free him. Without a visible target, their options were limited until they learned more about this new threat. Noah, your shield will damage the spider if it appears within range to attack us, and bring healing.” That they would soon need in earnest, he suspected. Best to get started on it. Jack, will you help with these webs?” Preferably with blades of air magic against the bindings on Sah, given what they knew of the Void’s weaknesses.

Hadama instructs the team to hit the Wyrm if it appears again, even if it means friendly fire. He warns of its tactic of causing earthquakes and falling rocks and tells Sah to stabilize the tunnel (not knowing the webbing’s properties yet). He asks Noah to use Divine Opposition to heal and shield them from another spider attack and requests Jack’s assistance with air magic in freeing Sah.

And he uses a single Gravity Spike to damage the Void webbing holding Sah, aiming carefully for the strands pinning his arms/chest to avoid hurting his ally.

JACK

Oh so that's... something.

Unable to fully enjoy the magnitude of power thrown at the Mirewyrm from his place watching their backs, as the Webvex appears - popping into existence like a daisy from the fucking ground and completely avoiding the ice he'd laid out, naturally - Jack has only a few seconds to comprehend the void spider before him, before it goes and splooges all over Sah.

Well. Small victories and all that. It isn't him.

The arachnid is gone again in a blink, and though Jack doesn't know where, he does sense the sudden drop in Sah's thoughts when it comes to the tether to his Earth magic.

Fuck.

"He ain't gonna be any use if that tunnel comes down on us," he barks out, whipping around with air magic already stirring his hair from his shoulders. "Not unless we get him out of that." Don't ask him how he knows. Abandoned stuff. You wouldn't understand.

What the captain can get behind are curt, precise orders, and it's with a nod towards Hadama that he whips a blade of air towards the webbing binding the hybrid's arms and chest.

Jack warns about the properties of the webbing (ask him about it later when he can come up with a good lie about how he knows) and tries to slice through the webbing binding Sah with a blade of Mastered Air.

Air manipulation (Abandoned/Hybrid): Can create and control the air. Must be within a 30ft radius.

The Forsaken

Pain writhed through the wyrm and the void tunnel all around them shuddered and groaned. Noah lifted his hand to strike again but before he could blink the same void-stricken blast sent him falling back hard against the wall. Wincing, the demigod clutched his chest and gasped for his breath.

Sah, too, was attacked by something behind them. It pained Noah as much not to be able to react and protect as much as the mirewyrm’s assault. As he turned his head to see Sah tangled in webbing, he became conscious of Hadamas grip steadying him. His breath steadied as they attempted to free the hybrid.

”I don’t think it will. I can heal us, but I don’t think celestial magic will touch the creatures here. It hasn’t done any damage to the titans that have attacked Torchline or Halo.” he said, breath and voice hitching with pain. He hasn’t used it in the cleansing battles (except for out of instinct, nearly a reaction he couldn’t control), because he knew how ineffective it was. He could, however, prepare to protect himself. He opened his eyes wide and partially shifted them, searching for any signs of the creatures. Should any sign come, the Forsaken would ignite his shield magic.

Noah says his celestial attacks won’t work against the creatures here. He readies his shield magic for himself and if there is any sign of either void creature returning he will activate it.

Sah

There was little time to process the wyrm's exit. The webbing was fast and Sah flinched as it wrapped around him, tightening in an unwelcome hold. There was something on his throat again and fucking hell, why. In so many incidents, even as others were attacked, for some reason, the enemy was always at Sah's throat. He hated having his neck touched, much less by enemies.

He was distantly grateful that Jack was able to inform the others of the situation so that he could focus on his predicament. The fact that he was nightmarishly cut off from his magic for the first time in his life. It was a harrowing sensation, an emptiness that would haunt him in the coming days.

For a moment, ice filled Sah's veins, and he debated trying to shift into his raven form to flee. But almost immediately, the fear was replaced with a burning rage. The Wild Thunder snarled, as fight won out. He stayed still long enough for Hadama and Jack to attempt to free him, not wanting to shove himself into their attacks. But then he began to thrash, trying to raise his shoulders and twist to stretch the webbing into snapping.

~

the crush
Sah ’s body jerked in resistance, muscles twisting and heaving against the oppressive bonds as Jack ’s blade of air sliced through the first strand. A second came from Hadama, a gravity spike as precise as a scalpel, driving into the slick void-woven netting just beside the hybrid’s chest. With a final thrash, the webbing split—not cleanly, but enough. The magic surged back into Sah like breath after drowning, wild and sharp.

And just in time, because beneath their feet, the ground shuddered.

It came without warning: the unmistakable impact of something massive slamming itself against the tunnel walls below. The Mirewyrm hadn’t fled—it had shifted, burrowing deeper into the Crush, and now it struck like a seismic pulse. The stone groaned. Hairline fractures raced across the ceiling. Then came the collapse.

Chunks of stone dislodged above them.

A slab struck Sah ’s shoulder, another glanced off Hadama ’s armour. Dust filled the tight air. Jack was forced sideways, scraping against the wall as rocks rained down like judgment. Only Noah remained untouched, his partially shifted form ducked low, instinct carrying him out of harm’s way.

For a moment, it seemed they’d get a second to recover. But it was a lie.

From the opposite side of the widened tunnel the air split with a low, bone-dry click. The Webvex phased back into existence—on the other side of the group now, as if reality had never mattered to it at all. Its dozens of eyes blinked at once, casting reflections of a hundred wrong angles.

Noah ’s head turned just as it reappeared—and his shield flared into existence, not that it mattered anyway. The spider struck again with terrifying precision. A mass of void-slick webbing launched forward, hitting him square in the chest. It spread instantly—across arms, throat, legs—sealing in an instant. Noah ’s magic faltered. Then died. He'd felt it leave him like blood draining from a wound. Not pain—absence. His bond to the stars, to Vi's light, blinked out like a candle in a void.

And as quickly as it had appeared, the Webvex flickered and vanished once more. Somewhere, deep below, the Mirewyrm laughed in silence.

Webvex (Rare): A massive, void-corrupted spider that stalks The Crush, the Webvex is an ethereal predator capable of phasing in and out of reality. Its translucent, oil-slick body pulses with alien constellations, and its many limbs jitter with unnatural, twitching grace. Where a face should be is a single, spiralling maw that consumes sound, memory, and reason. It spins crystalline void-webs that cling to magic, thought, and flesh alike.

He did not question the certainty in Jack’s voice, only accepted the problem before them and set himself to fixing it by freeing Sah. It took both he and the Captain working together with help from the hunter to do so, but at least they were successful.

As for what he had asked of Noah, he did not grit his teeth when the other Halovian refused to heal them. He did not let his frustration seep into the Attuned bond as Vi’s demigod chose to do… nothing. Except to selfishly protect himself. He allowed none of those emotions to find outward expression. They would not have been worth noting at all, if not for Jack’s presence.

They rose to the surface of his thoughts briefly, pale and sharp-finned, but descended just as quickly. There were other things to worry about as the tunnel inevitably shook, wounding the three who had been trying to free the earth mage. Hadama grunted as the rock came down on his shoulder – the same shoulder as last time, he noted grimly, and his decision of what he would do next was already made as he took stock of Jack and Sah’s injuries as well.

When the spider appeared and attacked Noah through his shield Hadama had already been knocked clear enough by the shaking tunnel and falling debris to avoid being caught in the webbing, but it was not difficult to guess who would be next. ”I will heal us.” So that they knew what to expect from him. ”And attempt to foul its next shot. Sah, stabilize the tunnel,” he spoke with clipped precision as he braced himself with his trident. Jack, ambush the spider. Or find a way to lure the Mirewyrm back into our range.”

And with an exhalation he called the healing moonlight to rise around them – and to hopefully cause the spider to stumble in its next attack if it stepped into the rising mist.

Hadama uses Turn the Tide to Heal the party and give the spider disadvantage of it pops in again. He tells Sah to stabilize the tunnel against the Mirewyrm’s attack, and he asks Jack to hold fire until the sees the spider or think real hard about how they can bring the Mirewyrm back into range (maybe with INT).

JACK

"Fuck." It's not eloquent, but it's sure as shit accurate as a response to what happens when the tunnel falls down on their fucking heads. Feeling his coat soak some of the jagged edges of stone and bruising force of the earth, he's nonetheless left with more than a few lacerations to show of it, the force dropping him to one knee.

At least the hybrid is free, though, and whilst there's all sorts of trouble in the paradise of Hadama's thoughts (and Noah's body, as the web attaches itself), Jack shakes the metaphorical cobwebs free from his mind to listen. "'Preciate it," he grates, in response to the healing. "An' I'll do that, yeah. It'd be real nice if that tunnel shit didn't happen again, though."

Nodding at Sah as if to say he absolutely reiterates the Tidebreaker's request about stabilising the tunnel from any debris, even as he readies his air magic, he's got to be honest about his chances. (And that particular bite of pride is sharp). "Next go around," he tells Hadama, "someone like you would be better off targetin' it. An' didn't you say you baited the wyrm out last time? We kill that spider an' I bet it'll get lured back."

Jack agrees with Hadama's plan of action and will hold his fire until he sees the Webvex, when he'll try to hit it with Mastered Air. He suggests that killing the spider might be the bait they need to bring back the Mirewyrm.

The Forsaken

The tunnel groaned and shifted. Noah reacted on instinct, shoving himself back as chunks of void-tainted earth broke loose and crashed down. He gritted his teeth, hissing through them as his head snapped up, eyes partially-shifted to pierce the dark—just in time to catch a single, massive eye. Violet. Violent. Far too large. His shield held, activated, until—

The moment the web hit him, Noah staggered. It clung fast—tight, cloying, cold—and in an instant, his magic vanished. Not drained, not dimmed. Gone. Snuffed out like a candle in a storm, one breath and it was over. The fire that lived beneath his skin, the strength that tethered him to Vi, flickered once—then died.

His shield dropped. He froze, heart hammering against the sudden emptiness. The silence inside him was louder than any roar. He tried to roar, to summon the celestial dome, the strength of his demigod blood. Nothing answered. No light. No shift. Just web. Just emptiness. He missed Hadama’s healing, missed thanking the once-mer.

Had there been any spark left, the cavern would’ve lit with celestial brilliance. Instead, Noah thrashed. He growled low in his throat, willing his form to change—bear, griffin, anything—as muscle strained and claws willed to come. He tore at the web with everything he had that wrapped his chest like a death shroud.

He tried. He kept trying.

And his allies let him.

Noah tries to partially shift to get the claws of his griffin and tries to tear away the webbing.
