The Forsaken

You see the things they never see
All you wanted I could be
Noah stepped into the cavernous sparring hall of the barracks, the chill of the stone floor and the frost scattered across the walkway biting through his boots in the early morning hour.

He had sent Deimos a note the night before, requesting time to practice magical defenses, and he was glad to see the Warden had been able to oblige. Noah’s glacier gaze found Deimos across the arena—calm, steady, the embodiment of discipline. Though the Family’s threat had vanished, the weight on his shoulders hadn’t lifted entirely. Neither had it off Deimos. Noah was confident of that. The demigod felt lighter, yes—but not careless. The world still demanded vigilance, and he knew Deimos understood that better than most, too.

“Deimos. Thanks for coming,” he said as he approached. He wanted to reach out, to greet the man with a pat to the arm, but hesitated. Instead, he offered a broad smile.

The note from Noah had meant another task in a sea of many; but this hour he had time for it. Measured, calculated, streamlined to get things accomplished amidst the Barracks before he maneuvered to other portions of the day – such as going out on a patrol with a horde of others, and desecrating what they could find of any void flora or fauna.

But it was still strange – to go from one day where they were plotting the next team driving and diving into Starfall’s depths, and then the next, pondering over shards of peace and repose. Jarring – he’d known war so many times that this interim felt wholly bizarre. Maybe the ending would be more satisfying than the abrupt and unholy beginning.

With that in mind though, he’d taken care to instruct several other soldiers, waiting for the Forsaken to arrive. Eventually, his name was called from across the room, and he nodded his head towards the others, bowing out of the conversation and heading towards another – already designated in an open space for impending enchantment means. He nodded at Noah, the uncertainty lingering in his chest all over again. “What magic did you want to work on?” as his long strides took him towards the makeshift arena.

In truth, Deimos was Caido's most proficient mage. It wasn’t just the ease with which Deimos wielded magic—though that was impressive enough—it was the precision, the discipline beneath every movement. Deimos didn’t just cast magic; he commanded each ability with the kind of control that spoke to the years spent mastering both body and mind--and, he could pack a punch

Noah shifted his weight slightly as the cold air nipped at his skin. “I want to practice two magics,” Noah said, voice steady. “My shield. I'm not sure yet it's limits. You'll be able to really test its endurance." Noah wanted to practice against his shield magic because it was his first line of defense—a barrier between him and the chaos of battle. In a world where danger could strike without warning, a strong, reliable shield meant survival. It bought him time, protected his focus, and kept his instincts sharp. Eventually, he would go back to Safrin and that shield would extend to another. For now, though, Noah needed to know how much it could take.

"And my celestial arrows.” Because those, too, were so different than the bow and arrow he had wielded his entire life.

In fairness to the multitudes across Caido, Deimos had been ordained and consecrated in magic since the time of his birth – and through three different worlds and two lifetimes, had developed strength and fortitude within something as natural to him as breathing. It was an inherent piece of his existence – to be able to wield flames or drain the life out of another, to command and control the elements straight from his own ichor. But he also leant all those skills, sagacity, musings, and education to a variety of others, so that they too could learn, experience, and understand the limitations, and the power, the prowess, the potential, of everything stored within themselves.

So to hear Noah wanted to practice two of his magics wasn’t surprising; many did the same. “Sure,” came on a rumbling acceptance as they made their way into the notable area – open, only underneath the blue, Leafchange sky, and near some others also practicing their skills. They’d be far enough away not to make an impact upon one another, but it was still satisfying to see some of their own bringing forth pieces of stone or wreaking lightning havoc in the periphery.

Backing away, fully intent on testing limitations, he jutted his jawline towards the Forsaken. “Bring out your shield first,” and they could see the initial boundary lines.

Noah took a slow breath, steadying himself as the cold air seared his lungs. He gave a firm nod to his warden and stepped across the practice field. He turned, then, to face Deimos again.  He extended one hand, fingers splayed, and summoned the celestial shield. Light shimmered into shape, all brilliant and radiant, forming around him like a second skin. The celestial light swept around him and moved gently. For any onlookers who chose to pause and watch, it might even be beautiful.

He knew Deimos understood what he was asking for and didn’t want it to hold—he wanted to test its edges. He wanted to see what assault would make it crack and dissipate, to disappear under the strength of the Sword.

He widened his stance, grounding his weight. The demigod tucked his chin, bracing for impact, and gave Deimos the signal to begin.

If it cracked, so be it—he needed to know where.

He waited – watching as the shield began to form, beacons and pieces of Vi shrouding Noah in protective holds. But Deimos didn’t stand there in admiration, he knew his role was to see where things buckled, cracked, and faded. If it could manage, protect, and remain to a barrage of elements and fixtures. So once the demigod was ready, he unfurled his own incantations.

The first was one of his favored: a conflagration, embers swiftly turning into infernos, blistering, boiling, ravaging, savaging, long-lasting flames entirely under his control. He built them to a steady crescendo before intentionally bringing them to surround the shield, pushing in on the light’s frame. More power, more might, pierced into its celestial slate, eyes narrowing in concentration, as they scaled and reached, mustering all that primordial power and dark, overbearing vehemence.

The flames came on and Noah couldn't say he was surprised. He knew the man favored the fire. It almost made the Forsaken's lip twitch into a smirk, but his face couldn't will it as his eyes widened in the wake of the coming assault. The flames were bright and hot and soon they overwhelmed him. He held his breath as his shield withstood the damage, holding as flame scorched against celestial energy, filling the training area with a blinding white light.

Noah felt his arms start to shake, for they had gone up to cover his face out of instinct as the flames surged his way,  and he knew the shield was going to give. So he ran. He turned quickly and sprinted, the shield's light fading as he did so, and he dove into a roll out of the way of the flames.

While Noah knew Deimos wouldn't kill him, Noah wouldn't forget that he could.

Already drawing breath hard, and with limbs shaking, Noah could only twist and bring himself up on one knee. With his shield gone and needing to recharge in its weakened state, Noah drew up his arms. The bow formed in his hands, celestial light solidifying before their eyes, and he pulled back. An arrow formed and Noah let it loose towards the warden.

The flames roared, vibrant and potent, until it seemed Noah’s shield gave way. Arching a brow, Deimos waited – for either the barrier to be replaced, reformed, recalculated, or something else to occur.

It only took a second more to see the bow, and then he knew and understood what was coming next.

Snorting inwardly, he adjusted tactics. Eternally content with trying other things, especially when calculating, scheming, and plotting (it kept his mind sharp, ready, eager, fervent), his mind plotted out a new course. Smothering the fire back into his own denizens, he opted for amusement, shifting the incantations into Air. The mastered portions quickly took rise, and he carefully, painstakingly, swept the current through their portion of the training grounds, purposefully attempting to swindle the arrow back in the direction of its caster.

The arrow left Noah’s bow in a streak of celestial fire, and for a sliver of a moment, he believed it would land. But then the air shifted.

Wind spiraled through the training ground, sharp and controlled with the ever-present mark of the Sword. His arrow was caught mid-flight, yanked from its course with practiced ease. It twisted in the air, momentum stolen, and then, with calculated cruelty, began to curve back toward him.

His eyes widened. “Shit.”

He dropped low and rolled, the celestial bolt slicing over his shoulder and fizzling out against the far wall in a flash of sparks. Panting, Noah came up on one knee again, glancing toward Deimos. He reached for the shield on instinct, but felt it still faltering—recharging, not ready.

His arm dropped.

No time.

So he struck again.

The bow reformed with a pulse of light, smoother this time, drawn faster. He called on his magic, drew back and loosed two arrows in quick succession—one aimed for center mass, the other veering slightly right.

Another waiting game ensued; his brow arching as Noah didn’t project the shield once more. He shrugged inwardly, uncertain how much practice they’d be getting out of the manifestation, when the other man seemed to partake in the arrow display once more. A dual measure, firing off the rounds of light with ease and practice.

Deimos had that too. Dropping the Air, he melded into his Earth formations – dragging dirt, debris, rock, soil into the mold of a shield, layered and lacquered in a spread of thirty feet. He heard the arrows puncture and pierce, the shimmer of radiance emblazoned amidst the loam, but nothing slated into his frame.

Taking this into consideration, he tested with the same element, launching a barrage of stones and rocks at the demigod, pondering if the guard would be placed this time, or if Noah had something else up his sleeve.

The arrows struck true—but not deep. Noah saw them vanish in a flash of celestial light against the earthen shield Deimos summoned, their glow fading into grit. The ground rumbled and Noah's eyes tracked the shift of soil and rock—stones and shards and jagged chunks of training ground debris hurtled toward him in a punishing barrage.

His breath caught. But this time, the magic answered.

The shield surged back to life.

Celestial light swirled around him, radiant and curved, just as the first stones crashed into it. Light burst outward in a spray of sparks and dust, the impact reverberating through Noah’s arms and shoulders. He gritted his teeth, grounding his feet, focusing everything into keeping the barrier intact.

It held.

Barely.

Each rock that struck sent a jolt through his bones, but the celestial light flared brighter with each blow, matching the rhythm of his heartbeat. As the last stone clattered to the side, Noah’s chest heaved with exertion. Sweat dripped down his temple, but a flicker of satisfaction stirred beneath the strain.

He was still standing. The shield had held. He had trained the two magics he wanted Deimos to test. Accomplishment swelled in his chest as celestial light faded, and his glacier eyes flicked up to his warden, waiting for anything else he had to throw at him.

The barrage of stones met with purpose; towards the shield anyway. He watched as the light came back to life, taking the threshold of rocks hurtled its way. Arching a brow, his eyes went towards Noah, who simply seemed to be waiting.

Nodding, the Sword persisted – rounding three elements together for a test of his own fortitude, control, and might. How much power could he yield between the multitudes? How far would it go? How much could it conquer? Snagging at the earthen bounty, he placed water within, chunks of ice and flecks of droplets, alongside the air, whirling them into a miniature maelstrom, maneuvering in a brief flicker of tornado combinations – before sending it Noah’s way.

Noah’s eyes widened as the shield began to dim around him. It had protected him well from Deimos’ assault, but he knew this spar wasn’t over. With his shield spent, Noah had to dodge. The tornado was a veritable terror of elemental prowess and it made the demigod’s heart lurch as he disappeared out of the way, only to reappear behind the Sword. It was only Vi’s power that kept him unscathed in the wake of all of the destructive and powerful magics that Deimos could manipulate and had mastered.

”Thanks, Dei.” Noah said, reaching forth his hand to shake his warden’s. ”I got a better scope on that shield. Like my offensive magic, it didn’t work against the void so I didn’t get to test the limits.”

Noah offered a smile and a nod to his friend, his warden, before he turned and made his exit, with a waved offering to try this again soon.
