Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.
Congratulations, Niki!

Pain lances through him as the blade greets his skin – but the butcher’s focus is entirely on the behemoth as he waits to see the strike land true. It connects in its main body, spiderwebbing out in inky veins, dark destruction blurring the line between memory mud and damage from those that are attacking it. The call of the birds fade away from their initial assault and he watches as a Pegasus zips toward the beast, the griffin remaining and blasting more fire toward it (though he can’t hear anything that may be conversing between the attuned). Even the dragon above who’s breath had gone wide is met with another chance to blast fire at the beast.
Ah, but Asta heard Sohalia’s call earlier of trying not to burn her, and with a quick glance back toward the Pegasus and a soft chuckle escaping him of the entirety of the fight, the butcher lifts the blade again, slick with his own blood as he grits his teeth. "Let's go again, mm?" Muttering to himself and moving just enough to not be within the same space he was before lest the beast think he's a sitting duck, he slides the blade in a new wound further up his arm to send another blast of bloodbane at the large muddy beast.
Asta remains within range but moves a little so he isn’t in the same spot to be targeted by the behemoth and uses bloodbane again on it!

Sohalia surges forward, her body folding into the shape of a pegasus mid-gallop; wings unfurl in a flash of white and gold as she drives upward through the rain. Mud spatters her hooves as she kicks off from the sodden ground, rising toward the behemoth’s head. She connects squarely, her hooves cracking against the creature’s sludgy temple and sending ripples through its semi-liquid form. The thing reels, one of its glowing eyes collapsing inward like a popped bubble. Alas, she doesn't quite have the movement to avoid what comes next.
Below, Noah flares his wings, beating the air to pull the monster’s attention back to him. Fire gathers at the back of his throat, a hot pulse in the mist, before he releases it in a searing gout aimed low. The flames hit true, drying and cracking its slick hide...but they also lick upward in wild tongues, catching Sohalia. The edge of the blast brushes her flank, singing through wet feathers with a hiss.
Before she can recover altitude, Maea wheels overhead again, diving through the mist. Her dragonfire streaks brilliantly across the clearing, white-orange against the rain. The flame slams into the behemoth’s back, hardening its surface into blackened clay—and unfortunately, the wide arc of her attack clips Sohalia again. The pegasus vanishes briefly in the glare, the air thick with smoke and steam as the monster thrashes beneath them.
Astaroth, steady on the ground, uses the chaos to his advantage. Shadows coil around his arm as Bloodbane flares once more; the weapon bites into the creature’s torso, dark corruption spreading through the already-brittle mud. The behemoth lets out a guttural roar that rattles the trees, part agony, part fury.
For a heartbeat, the clearing glows with steam and embers. The behemoth’s molten eyes narrow on Sohalia given her proximity, still bright against the darkened air. With a convulsive heave, it tears two boulders from its own body and flings them skyward. The first smashes into her side mid-ascent, bursting into wet shrapnel and knocking her momentarily off balance. The second sails wide, exploding harmlessly against a tree and showering the ground with debris.
Through the rising heat and swirling rain, it’s clear there were cleaner shots available—plenty of open angles where Noah’s and Maea’s fire could have struck without catching the pegasus in the blaze or other attacks they might have utilized. But battle has a way of collapsing reason into instinct, and for now, the monster still stands—cracked, steaming, furious—as its attackers regroup amid smoke and rain.

There was a flash of satisfaction as Soh's hooves connected with the behemoth's head, sending mud squelching beneath her as she beat her wings to try to climb higher, but the moment was short-lived. Despite her shouted warning, it seemed that she wasn't fast enough to get out of the way. Flames from Noah's griffin form licked up from beneath, a flare from above came from Maea's dragon form, and then Soh was falling, flapping her wings in an attempt to keep herself from breaking every bone in her body as she plummeted at breakneck speed.
Pain. All she could feel was pain.
Her back legs were blistered all the way up to her haunches, and the skin along her back between her wings screamed as her feathers beat against the air helplessly. And maybe she would have been able to land safely if not for the behemoth. Angry and raging, it flung another boulder. This one smashed into her side just as she started to regain control over her momentum, sending her careening down towards the ground. A soundless shriek ricocheted through the Attuned bond, a sound that only Noah would hear -
She landed in a heap, her fluttering wings somehow managing to soften the landing enough that it didn't kill her, though, honestly? At this moment, perhaps that would have been preferable to the slicing, stabbing pain in her side, along her back, down her legs. Everything hurt, and as she forced herself to her feet, she stumbled, narrowly avoiding a nearby tree trunk.
Not inclined to duplicate the experience, the Luminary nonetheless shoved her pain aside. Perhaps she wouldn't try to attack directly, but she had other ways to contribute. Waiting for any flames to die away, she then called to her birds once more. This time, only five answered the call, swooping in to attack the Memory Mud Behemoth once more.
---
Soh gets out of Noah and Maea's way, then holds her action until Noah and Maea have completed theirs to ensure her compelled birds are not hit by flames. Then she compels 5 birds to attack the Memory Mud Behemoth.
Can compel like-minded animals for assistance (1 large, 3 medium, 5 small, from the same animal family).

Panic, white hot and intense, laced through Noah and he’s moving before he knows it. His wings pushed him hard and fast, doing everything in his ability to get between the monster and Sohalia. He flew up towards the creature’s face, hoping to become its center of focus again. His assault came hard and fast, and he was a terror of strength and fury and worry. Fire plumed from his mouth when he knew he was between the monster and the fallen Pegasus, and he angled in, claws and talons raking and tearing and seeking to destroy.
SOHALIA? Noah screamed across the bond, straining his mental voice to reach the Luminary. SOH! Noah could feel the ache in his soul where the magic used to be, where the healing came from at the blessing of Vi. For the first time, apart from the loss of Vi’dore, Noah felt an emptiness in him that darkened the veil of his soul and made him cry out in a monstrous, earth-shattering roar as he spewed hellfire on the mud creature.
Noah flies towards the creature’s face, blasts it with fire again, and strikes with claws and talons at anything he can reach on it!

Beware the darkness of dragons, Beware the stalker of dreams,
Realizing her mistake - and Noah's - as Sohalia screamed in pain, the black dragon hesitated, its large wings beating to halt her in the air above the clearing. There was no doubt that the fire was working, the dried and cracked mud along the monster's back was evidence of that, but despite her best attempts to avoid the others, someone had still gotten hurt. Should she shift, then? Use some other form, some other ability - should she focus on healing Sohalia or work to finish off the behemoth? Indecision paralyzed her mind, dregs of panic at the cost of making the wrong decision causing her to make no decision at all, and as if the secret to finishing this awful situation could be found within the mud monster itself, Maea's misty eyes scanned over it again and again. Searching for a weakness other than fire, some clue that would reveal the best cause of action.
Maea uses INT 1 to try and find a weakness in the mud-monster beside fire.

It all kind of goes according to plan – even if it isn’t what the rest of the group had intended. It’s precisely why the butcher had carved more of himself out rather than shift and blast fire at the beast – because with the Pegasus flying close he knew his control could warp and change the expected outcome.
Either way, he takes a step toward Sohalia before the griffin drops to presumably body block her and the dragon above hesitates in its attack, seeming to look at it more than attack even when he could tell from this distance that the behemoth was crumbling and full of fury.
Gritting his sharp teeth, he watches as more fire is blasted the beasts way and perhaps its confidence that has him fairly confident that he isn’t an immediate target waving his face around in front of the beast, that he could get away with another teensy little gutting of himself to hopefully get the job done.
Of course, it is getting more and more difficult for the butcher to keep using bloodbane – such that his fingers slick with one of his favorite butchering knife trembles as he sucks in a breath, feeling the cool sting of the rain as he plunges the knife one more time – higher up on his arm for another fresh wave of crimson that pours out of him, aimed at the beast with a growl that passes his lips.
It’s worked so far, so Asta bloodbanes the behemoth a THIRD TIME (for good luck or something).

As Sohalia pulls herself clear of the chaos, she steadies her mind and waits, watching Noah and Maea through the haze until the last sparks of their flames fade. Then, reaching outward, she gathers her focus and calls once more to the minds of the birds still circling above. Five of them break from formation at her command, streaking toward the behemoth with a flurry of wings and claws. But the effort strains her; her body still throbbing from burns, her concentration flickering. The birds veer off-course, their attacks slashing only through steam and smoke before scattering back into the treetops.
Below, Noah wheels through the air, feathers slick with rain. He dives toward the monster’s face, unleashing another torrent of fire meant to sear through its softened hide. The blaze erupts brilliantly, lighting the clearing in a molten glow, but the behemoth shifts at the last instant, its ruined mass collapsing inward just enough to spare it. Flames sweep past harmlessly, licking against the mud but failing to catch.
High above, Maea circles in silence, dark wings cutting through the mist but holding her distance.
Astaroth, unfazed, steps forward through the steam. Once more Bloodbane flares to life in his hand, its energy humming like a heartbeat. He drives the weapon home a third time, striking deep into the creature’s flank. The mud sizzles and blackens around the impact, the curse spreading through its body like cracks in fired clay.
The behemoth roars—a wet, broken sound—and swings wildly toward Noah, furious and off-balance. Its massive arms tear through the air, hurling gobs of itself that splatter uselessly against the ground. The creature staggers, its footing unsteady from the repeated strikes and the weight of its own shifting body. For the first time, it seems unsure of its shape, parts of it dripping away into the soaked soil even as its molten eyes burn with undimmed rage.

It was hard to focus through the blinding pain, harder still to try to control something beyond her own body. Her birds flew harmlessly through steam and smoke before dissipating once more into the treetops to screech their irritation. Something inside her pulsed with sadness, or perhaps regret - because if she couldn't even do this, if she couldn't contribute to the battle, either herself or her minions, then what good was she?
She gasped for air as Noah attacked, noting that Maea held her fire; the fourth in their group, an Ancient she recognized vaguely as someone Flora associated with, did something that she couldn't quite see. Whatever they were doing was working, though - the great behemoth seemed to falter under their attacks, and something in Soh recognized that the fight was nearing its end.
She could stop, she supposed; fade into the trees and wait for the others to take the beast down. But something in her raged at the thought, and she knew that she could no more flee than she could take the behemoth down alone. But maybe, if she could just make one more attack count...
Gathering herself, Soh lunged forward, darting around Noah to sprint towards their target. At its feet, she wheeled, kicking out at its squelching, muddy leg, and then she was away again, fleeing towards the safety of the trees.
---
Soh runs towards the Memory Mud Behemoth, kicks at its leg, and flees towards the trees to get out of range of the others' attacks.
The fire had missed. He saw the plume of flame wash uselessly across the thing’s sloughing hide, more steam than wound. His wings beat against the rain-heavy air, every feather slick and heavy. He kept the creature’s attention on him and it tried to attack, though that proved futile.
Then the Pegasus limped? barreled in on bright hooves.
Relief hit him.
She was alive. But with no wellspring of healing to pull from, no divine balm waiting under his skin, Noah only hoped she would stay upright until this creature came down. Flaring his wings again, Noah surged forward and attacked with talons and claws and teeth. The Sentinel dove at its legs, the points where its shape struggled to remember how to hold itself upright
Noah had been more than a blessing, once. He had been muscle and instinct and the patient, brutal knowledge of a predator that survived long winters. That part of him stirred now.
Noah dives in towards the mud monster’s legs and attacks with teeth/claws/talons.

Once the air is still, Sohalia reaches for the remaining birds still bound to her will, guiding five of them into another strike. They dive in unison, wings cutting through mist; but her focus wavers, her body trembling from exhaustion and burns. The birds miss entirely, their claws raking only the outer edges of the behemoth’s molten form before scattering into the treetops once more.
Below, Noah dives in fast and low. His feathers are blackened by heat and rain, his eyes bright with purpose as he swoops toward the creature’s legs. He slams into the monster’s lower mass, tearing through brittle, half-dried mud. The creature shudders, lets out a hollow, echoing moan, and then splits apart.
For a heartbeat, there’s silence. Then it bursts.
The behemoth explodes in a wet, concussive blast of steam and muck, a rain of dark clay and stone showering across the clearing. Noah, right in its midst, ducks his wings and emerges untouched as the pressure wave rushes past him. Everyone else—Maea above, and Astaroth at the back—are caught in the backlash. Mud pelts them in thick, hot clumps that sting against skin and feathers alike, spattering the trees and ground until the forest is painted in dripping brown.
When the haze clears, the centre of the clearing is a crater of churned earth. Where the creature once stood, the ground gleams faintly beneath the rain. Half-buried in the steaming muck rests something impossible—a clutch of eight eggs, smooth and brightly painted. Across every curved shell, a tiny hot air balloon is painted in vivid colours—red, blue, and gold, the pigment untouched by mud or fire. They sit together in the crater’s heart, shining like secrets just waiting to hatch.Congratulations! You've killed the Memory Mud Behemoth!

Later, Sohalia would wonder how she managed to stay alive. Her kick didn't manage to connect with the behemoth - no surprise there, given how drained and injured she was - but she did somehow move out of the way enough that Noah was able to attack. This time, there was no fire, only teeth and claw, and Soh nearly collapsed with relief as the monster moaned - a hollow, eerie noise that preceded its imminent demise.
The mud creature exploded, showering the group with hot, molten clumps that sizzled on impact with Soh's skin. There was a gasp through the Attuned bond, a noise that only Noah would hear, and then the girl lost control of her form. The Pegasus shifted abruptly into a disheveled young woman, and Soh sat down hard, not far from the crater that was all that remained of the behemoth.
Burns licked their way up her legs and over her back, her skin bubbling where the fire had staked its claim. The skin where the mud monster had struck her was sore as she gripped her ribcage, a stuttered breath the only noise that made it past her lips. She was pretty sure at least one rib was broken, and there were marks from the dying embers of the mud monster's explosion that peppered her skin as well. All in all, it could certainly be worse - she could have died, after all - but it could certainly be much, much better.
Something glinted in the crater, and Soh looked down to see a clutch of - were those eggs?
Groaning, she crawled closer, her vision clouded by black spots of pain. Picking up two eggs - one in each hand - she stared down at them, trying her hardest not to pass out. Now that the fight was over, the adrenaline was leaving her body, and she was exhausted, and hurting, and nauseous all at once. Shock was setting in. She needed to be healed - and badly.

Crooked souls trying to stay up straight Dry eyes in the pouring rain
Noah’s claws and talons raked into deep, thick mud. All of his ferocity laid out in one final attack, and it brought the beast to its end. Mud expanded and splattered, covering those closest to the monster in muck and grime. Noah grimaced as he shifted, the face still holding true as it changed from griffin to man. ”Maea!” Noah called into the canopy at the black dragon, waving her down with one arm. ”We need a healer!” Noah didnt know if Maea had any healing abilities herself as an ancient, but he did know that the Greatwood was her home and she would be able to find them what they needed if she couldn’t provide it herself.
Noah was still aware of the mudlings and the others that fought against them, but with the sheer number of other bodies against two mudlings and the Luminary, Noah only cared about the Luminary in this moment. Closing the distance to her, Noah crouched at her side as she picked up two eggs. The pain must have been so terrible that her mind couldn’t even think straight. Sohalia, The attuned bond leaked through to her as the Sentinel inspected her over, where is it the worst? He looked up at her eyes, then down to the eggs in her hand. Brightly colored and not even covered in muck, Noah turned towards the others and grabbed one off the top. What are these? His brows knit together as he looked back to Sohalia, face contorted with worry and confusion.
Noah calls for Maea that they need healing, and grabs one egg very confusedly.
Beware the darkness of dragons, Beware the stalker of dreams,
Nothing Maea saw convinced her that their course of action had been wrong, and a moment later the evidence came in the form of a violent eruption as the mud monster died. Pelted by stinking mud and detritus, the dragon recoiled in the air, her coasting interrupted. The annoyed wriggling and snorting to shake off the grime was cut short by Noah's shout however, and she descended towards the ground, shifting while still a fair ways off the ground and dropped down next to the crater with catlike agility.
"I can heal. Let me see her." Striding past the clutch of eggs without giving them much thought she knelt next to Sohalia and winced in sympathy at the sight of the burns. Drawing her chakram from the belt at her waist Maea sliced deep into her own palm, allowing pain and blood to convert into power. A red glow surrounded her hands as she guided Bloodboon to heal the young woman, frowning lightly in deep concentration.
Maea takes NO eggs, and focuses on healing Sohalia with mastered Bloodboon.

They say I'm a dangerous man, better run fast as you can
He thinks they’ve done it as the last blows crack into the behemoth, bird sailing wide and the griffin diving toward the beast with claws and fury. He waits with bated breath, already activating a bit of his haunt, the shadows wrapping and warping around him and the arm that’s becoming more and more limp and slick with blood. The rain stings as it hits the open carved portions of his skin, but adrenaline and pure confidence flares in the butcher’s mind, shadows enveloping portions of his body and streaking out from under him, almost ready to try and keep him hidden.
And then it explodes.
Clumps of mud fly out in a speed far more intense than what Asta can prepare for. The heat doesn’t bother him, it doesn’t sting in the way that the pressure of which the clumps nail him with. It’s battering after battering, nailing him in the face and his ruined arm, his side in rapid succession. A snarl leaves him in a dissonant sound as he’s brought down, pulling himself up from the mud in the rain with a hiss of pain to take in his injuries and knowing it’s really fucking bad.
Adrenaline keeps him going, though, despite the thundering of his heart. The call to Maea – whom he realizes must have been that dragon above – is a minor distraction as he forces himself to find it in him to pick himself up from the ground, and when he does he takes a few rattling breaths, looking to the destruction left behind to spy a bundle of eggs.
Some claimed, some not, the butcher staggers toward it with his ruined arm clenched to his chest, jaw set tight as he ignores everyone else there to take the rest of the eggs and leave so he can work on fixing his wounds himself to make it the rest of the trek back home, wreathed and cloaked in shadows that follow him like ghouls.
Asta takes the rest of the eggs! (5 I think?) And goes to leave
