Character of the Season
Frail in body but dangerously quick of mind, Nikandr is the sort of character who proves that curiosity can be just as perilous as any weapon. A necromancer, inventor, and problem-solver with more ambition than self-preservation, Niki approaches the world like a puzzle box begging to be opened, even when what’s inside has teeth. Blunt, dry-witted, fiercely independent, and carrying a history best left partially buried, he has a knack for making even failure feel fascinating. Whether he’s raising the dead, moving across Caido to King's End, or experiencing a hangover for the first time, Nikandr brings a wonderfully strange spark to Caido, and we can’t wait to see what trouble his brilliant mind wanders into next.
Congratulations, Niki!

JACK
"Aight, locals said they heard weepin' from the Crimson Cataract a couple days ago. People ain't really been near the place since, so here's hopin' we find what we're after." What they're after, as Jack had clarified in his letter to both Sunjata and Melita, is a banshee. For killing purposes, specifically. Jack hadn't sugarcoated it - when does he ever - when it comes to the apparent aggression of the rag-clad creature or the danger in engaging with her, but with a demigod at both his left and right hand, what could go wrong?
(Ha, ha, ha).
"You ever seen one of these before?" he asks, voice low as they get closer to the Cataract, the Captain sticking to the shade of the trees and keeping his eyes sharp for any movement. From his pocket he takes a wodge of cotton, pulling a few smaller pieces from it before offering it to the others. "In case it tries to make your eardrums fuckin' bleed," he explains. "Oh - an' if this goes tits up and I die, there's a feather in my coat pocket. Be a dear an' use it on me, would you?"
This thread will fulfill the following quest requirement:
- Kill a mirage crab or a banshee (initiate a KQ)
Jack brings himself and everything on his profile (except Seven), and he's also brought some cotton to plug their ears in the hope that the banshee won't be able to scream them to death as much. He tells Sunjata and Melita about his revivify feather in case shit goes sideways.

Melita’s initial response to potential violence was always “yes” – the questions, if any at all, would come later. But she knew the circumstances laden around banshees and their bullshit, had encountered similar nonsense in her collected nuances around the Grounds from years and years before. “Don’t think so, but I heard they’re not great,” she uttered with a shrug, taking the offered cotton and beginning to plug her ears with it.
Readying herself, crouched amidst the brush so that she didn’t immediately run out and become the prime target, her eyes flickered along to the Cataract in the periphery – a favored little haunt of hers. Probably about to lose that claim to fame. Turning towards Sunjata though, she gave a modest grin, thoughts churning over Jack’s revivify feather, of what it meant to be having to be heralded back to life again. “Thouuuuugh, maybe you could fly us the fuck over the bitch if it gets real bad,” and then she made a few pew pew pew finger guns for effect, arms coming out briefly to look like dragon wings.
But thereafter she was all business, taking a long, deep breath, steeling herself for the inevitable. Weapons eternally at the ready. Magic at her behest. Boldness at their forefront.

Melita brings herself and everything listed on her profile (except her companions). She uses the offered cotton to put it into her ears and hopefully block out impending screams.

but am i too late? or hearts to your spades, if i don't suit you? then what do you want from me?
He does hope that the banshee hasn’t moved on from where it’s been last noted to be. If anything, the dark circles under his eyes and his generally eh mood that Jack likely picks up on immediately seems very clear he’s willing to tank whatever – back to that deep set personality flaw that he’s more likely to take some hits so he could feel something other than the bullshit that’s tangled up in his chest. Bullshit he hasn’t told Melita the answer to, yet, hoping to have had the time to tell her at their dinner in the near future.
For now, though, Sunjata straightens up to answer Jack’s question. “I think I’ve seen one once. From a distance, though, never got up close.” He hadn’t wanted to, truthfully. As the cotton is produced, the Flood takes a moment to slip out the hEARs in his ears to pocket them in his bag of holding because he doesn’t need any additional help in his ears bleeding. It’s about the time he can take the cotton from Melita and plug his own ears enough. His steel gaze flits back to Jack with the revivify feather and he nods, shooting him a lopsided smile. “Sure. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, huh? I’ve got healing now and a barrier.” Which might be beneficial for them.
The cataract comes into view and the Flood shifts the bag on his shoulder once he gets the things he needs from it, crouching alongside Melita he looks over at his niece with a soft snort. “Could do that too. I’m flexible. Happy to tank to start, though. And I'm pretty sure if I get in the Cataract, I'll have some better luck landing my hits.” He's pretty sure that the Cataract is a naturally occurring body of water, which means he should try to aim for his portion of the fighting to be in it, knowing his usual luck with these sorts of things he should take every advantage he can get.
Sunjata brings himself and the following from his profile; except his companion. He is NOT currently wearing his hEARs and has put the offered cotton into his ears too.

The Wildwood does not darken as the trio delve deeper; it does not twist, nor rear, nor bare any hidden teeth. Birds fall silent first, then insects, then even the restless creak of bark and branch stills until the forest seems to hold itself unnaturally upright, caught between heartbeats. The shifting paths beneath their boots stop wandering, roots settling as though reluctant witnesses to what comes next.
Then the sound comes. It is not singing, it is not quite weeping. It is a shriek, raw, tearing, and vast enough that it feels less like something heard and more like something pressed directly against the inside of the skull. The cotton dulls the edge of it, blunting the sharpest needles of pain, but it does nothing to stop the vibration that rattles bone and teeth alike. The scream echoes off the Crimson Cataract, skipping across water and stone, rebounding through the trees until it is impossible to tell where it began.
A pale shape glides between the trunks, not parting branches so much as ignoring them altogether. A skeletal woman, draped in ragged white cloth that hangs like a ruined wedding gown, drifts forward at chest height, her limbs too long, her posture wrong; neck craned, shoulders slumped forward as though pulled by an invisible cord. Her mouth opens wider than it should be able to, and the wail crescendos again.
A bony hand lashes out with terrifying precision at Jack, fingers stretching to close around his throat, and passes through empty air instead, grasping nothing but the space he occupied a moment before. The banshee’s momentum carries her onward, her form phasing seamlessly through the thick trunk of a nearby tree as though bark and wood are no more than mist.
Another scream rends the clearing as she emerges on the far side, hovering there now, half-obscured by roots and hanging vines, head snapping back toward him with singular, merciless focus.

Honestly? When the banshee appears in all of its close glory, it’s terrifying. Sunjata can only barely hide the grimace that crosses his face, the uncanniness of it opening its mouth far wider than it should be able to, skeletal and draped in ghostly fabrics. Her posture reminds him briefly of a puppet show he might have seen in his youth, dragged along by a different kind of force.
She approaches Jack before Sunjata has a chance to do much, and with her ending up with nothing in her hand, she continues to move forward and Sunjata figures now is as good a chance as ever as he hisses a quiet sound under his breath, trying not to let her haunting cry get under his skin.
“Hey! Come and get me!” He taunts, emerging into the clearing between the banshee and his allies, shooting her a far too charming grin as he tries to take her focus. He marches as far as he can to place himself within range of the banshee, immediately reaching down into him for his riptide. It erupts from him, aimed directly for the banshee hoping that it’ll hit and grant them a good start.
Sunjata puts himself between the banshee and Jack and Melita and within range of hitting the banshee with his riptide and immediately launches it at her.

they should have checked the ashes of the women they burned alive
So there were plans, and then there was the inevitable screaming.
As much as the cotton absorbed, the wailing was something Melita found she didn’t particularly like; it sent a prickling emotion down her spine that one might consider fear. Trepidation. An uncanny, eerie semblance that many things were awry. A threat. A warning. An omen. The Honeybee rarely listened to such precarious divinations; but gods did it ever give her a moment of consideration. Her body straightened, unyielding, and a quick breath was taken as bony hands lashed out – quick and sudden, sharp and ghastly towards Jack. “Fuck that,” came through as she mimicked drawing her bow, snagging at one of her elemental arrows. Ice, so maybe the bitch could freeze for half a second. “She looks like a fucking nightmare.”
While her uncle served as a distraction, Melita opted to remain visible, for the time being. Not wanting to get caught in any crossfire, she went for the arrow instead – shooting its chilling pinnacles towards the hovering banshee.

Melita uses her bow bracelet and elemental arrows to fire an ice arrow at the banshee.

Jack, of course, can't read the thoughts of banshees, and so in retrospect the blood-curdling scream is a blessing in disguise. The cotton in his ears, though, even more so. Having been in the process of trying to sift useful thought from general angst when it comes to Sunjata as the creature makes her move, Jack whips around and back just in time for a pale hand to claw at the air where his jugular had been just moments earlier.
"Shit," he hisses, and as Jata steps forward the Captain continues to step back - the Flood had said he was happy to put himself in the way of the thing, and so Jack is happy to let him. Melita is already reacting beside him, though, and so he wastes little time as well. Instinct wants him to reach for lightning, but combining that with great deals of water might do more harm than good.
So he follows suit with the elements already in play, summoning a lashing spray of ice shards to rain down upon the banshee.
Jack backs away and lets Sunjata put himself between them and the banshee, then rains icy shards down onto the creature!

believer, believe it or not you'll know when it ends and how it goes
The banshee reacts instantly to Sunjata ’s challenge. Her head snaps toward him with a sharp, unnatural jerk, attention dragging away from Jack as if hauled by an invisible hook. The wail shudders into something lower, more furious, vibrating through ribs and teeth as she shifts her hover to face the Flood head-on. The riptide erupts outward in a violent surge, water tearing across the clearing and slamming into the banshee’s incorporeal form with enough force to disrupt her glide. Though she does not topple in the way a living creature would, the wave visibly breaks her movement, her form warping and stuttering as the force crashes through her, sending her reeling back several feet through the air. The scream cuts off into a strangled snarl as the impact ripples through her, fragments of ragged fabric whipping wildly as she struggles to reassert control.
Melita ’s arrow follows a heartbeat later. The ice-tipped projectile whistles cleanly through the clearing and strikes true, embedding itself where the banshee’s ribs should be. Frost spiders instantly across her torso, crystalline veins crawling through tattered cloth and bone-pale form alike. The chill visibly slows her, her hovering faltering as the ice bites deep, drawing a sharp, piercing shriek that rattles against the Cataract and echoes back in distorted layers.
Jack ’s ice rains down immediately after, shards slicing through the space she was a moment ago, but the banshee twists, phasing partially out of alignment as the frozen spray passes harmlessly through her trailing form, shattering against roots and stone instead. The forest floor crackles with broken ice, but the creature remains untouched by that particular assault.
Anger replaces whatever grief once animated her. With Sunjata closest—loud, defiant, there—she surges forward in a blur of pale motion, gliding straight at him with terrifying speed. One skeletal hand lashes out, fingers elongating as they reach for his throat, cold and intent heavy enough to feel even before contact.
And misses.
She sails past him instead, momentum dragging her several feet beyond, her form clipping straight through another tree trunk without slowing. She spins midair, shriek tearing free once more as she whips back around to face him, fury now singular and focused.

The second that she locks her dead eyes on him and wails, Sunjata’s grateful for the cotton in his ears. A stream of panic floods low in his gut but he doesn’t balk away from her as he launches his riptide. Watching it spread out, he then begins to watch as it’s followed up by the ice quivers from Melita and the ice shards that fall upon empty space as she focuses on Sunjata wholly.
Gritting his teeth as she surges forward with an insane amount of speed, his heart thumps wildly in his chest to where he’s sure he can feel it in his throat – stepping away from her as she sails past him. Its with speed that has her rounding back a small distance away, swallowing down a gasp of breath to bark a laugh at her, trying to keep her attention entirely on him. “That all you got?” More taunts, more attempts to keep her focused on him.
Since it worked out so well the first time, Sunjata aims another riptide at her, hoping that this one strikes true again too, the explosion erupting from him yet again.
Sunjata tries to keep the banshee’s focus on him and launches another riptide at her!

There was a little flurry of triumph in between the inglorious thresholds of apprehension; between Sunjata and herself, the screeching, wailing thing had been marked. An opportunity then, to unfurl and unleash and keep going. “Gotcha bitch,” came on a seditious little whisper, eyes narrowing, ready to align another momentous surge of potency and power.
Though as she surged towards her uncle, Melita instinctively found herself moving towards the fray. The need to protect and defend family, as well as potentially snag at his abilities hadn’t left her thoughts. So while she crept forward, the Honeybee notched another icy arrow, firing it off at the monstrous ghost thing once more.

Between gotcha bitch and Sunjata's tide of water to tear through the banshee, there's not much to be disappointed in other than, ding dong, himself, and Jack's silent snarl is clear on his face as he sees his rain of ice miss the wailing woman. So that's the sort of fight this is going to be.
Luckily the Captain is well accustomed to the if at first you don't succeed mantra (and yes, that does mean he's familiar with missing, tyvm), so he takes little time to regroup and go back on the offensive. Continuing to allow the Flood to be the brick wall between himself and the banshee - and luckily she seems focused on Jata's pretty face now anyway - Jack summons more ice to the fray.
Again he tries to hurl it towards the creature, sending icy splinters down to cut and shred - and gods, let him be lucky at least once.
Jack continues to keep Sunjata between himself and the banshee and tries again to rain icy shards down onto her!

believer, believe it or not you'll know when it ends and how it goes
The banshee answers Sunjata ’s taunts with fury rather than fear. His second riptide detonates through the clearing with brutal force, the water slamming into her mid-glide and tearing through her incorporeal form in a concussive burst. This time she shrieks as she’s driven backward, her hovering destabilized again as the wave shreds her momentum and forces her several body-lengths away. The forest floor is left slick and churning beneath her path, roots slick with displaced water as the Cataract roars louder in response.
Melita ’s arrow strikes moments later. The ice buries itself deep, frost blooming violently across the banshee’s torso and down one elongated arm, the chill crawling like living veins through ragged cloth and skeletal frame. The creature’s movement stutters—slowed, disrupted—her scream hitching into something strangled and furious as the cold bites hard. Still, she does not fall.
Next, Jack ’s magic finally finds its mark. The rain of icy splinters crashes down around her, several shards cutting cleanly through her form, tearing away strips of spectral fabric and leaving fractures of frost and damage trailing in their wake.
And yet, she remains airborne. Damaged. Slowed. Enraged beyond reason, her attention never leaves Sunjata. With a guttural sound that might once have been grief, she surges forward again, relentless and singular in her focus. She glides low and fast this time, skeletal hands lashing out with bone-cold intent, fingers stretching impossibly long as they snap for his throat and shoulders.
Too slow. Sunjata slips away from the grasp with speed she cannot match, the banshee’s arms closing on nothing but displaced air once more as she overshoots him again. She drifts past, snarling, twisting sharply midair to reorient herself, her posture collapsing inward as though dragged forward by instinct alone.
She does not retreat nor does she hesitate. Despite the damage raked across her form, despite the obvious disadvantage, the banshee turns back toward him again, hovering low and close now, screams breaking into ragged gasps between attacks. She will keep coming; she does not know how to do anything else.

So grateful for the cotton in his ears, Sunjata never loses his focus on the banshee as he unleashes the riptide – holding his breath with a set jaw to watch it thankfully land again. The twitch of his lips in a small victory lingers while Melita’s arrow strikes and Jack’s magic shreds through her spectral form.
His smile starts to fade though as she dives toward him again – this time with a surprising amount of speed that has him immediately moving on instinct. He evades her grip, thankfully, loosening a huff of a sound as relief spreads through him and she keeps her attention on him – both of them twisting around to face each other like he’s some kind of Banshee Matador.
“Wow. You've gotta be better than that, c'mon!” He taunts her more. It’s a lot of work for them, though, and they still very obviously have more to do. She’s low and close and it sets him on edge, enough that he shoots another attempt at his riptide, wondering if she might be impacted by the close-range aspect of the ability.
Sunjata once again taunts and uses his riptide at the banshee again!

Another surge of shrieking and wailing, and Melita steeled herself again. Those hollowed out sounds were something tremendously overwhelming though; more than an incriminating feature, and gods she’d be glad when the bitch could be silenced forever. For now though, her eyes flickered around, trying to catch the rapid movements and motions. The ice seemed to be slowing her a little, but the maneuvers, the strategy, seemed to resound the same – so she stayed in place, not reaching out to tap and snag at her uncle’s magic just yet.
As he slipped away, and Jack’s motions worked, the Honeybee figured the banshee would screech her way into oblivion; go elsewhere, try to obliterate. But she didn’t seem to care about the wounds – which caused Melita’s head to tilt. They could all play that way, should the banshee want. All unrelenting and vicious, ruthless, demanding.
So she fired another icy shot, hoping to impale again.
