Nova's confidence did little to quiet the instinct that kept him hyper-aware of every movement she made. He adjusted mid-flight anyway, small corrections meant to make the ride feel effortless even while the air remained uncooperative. He had made Marcus and Margot practice carrying riders with him in his longma shift. This was very different, and despite his size and strength he could tell he couldn't do this for very long. This structure was not made for long treks of carrying a passenger.

As they got closer to the water, the world changed. The smoke thinned from a suffocating wall into drifting ribbons, torn apart by the colder sea winds. Each breath came easier here, though salted and sharp, and the rhythmic crash of waves below and the rush of the wind in his ears replaced the oppressive hush of the smoke. Noah kept them low, wing tips occasionally skimming the damp air where the sea misted.

Her frustration brushed against him through the bond, tight and prickling. Noah flicked an ear back, catching it before it could settle too deeply. That’s not failure. He told her gently. Distance can weaken connection. With time, that can change. He reassured her. Banking them away from the thickest smoke trailing the cliffs, the hunter angled toward clearer stretches of coastline where water gave way to scattered rock.

Where do you want to land? He pasued to let her contemplate her answer, before warmly reminding her, I was heading toward King’s End. Rodeo should be starting soon. With most of the smoke behind them now, this part of the coastline was safe enough if she chose it, but if she didn't he was not confident he would be able to carry her all the way to to the rodeo.

Nova
She wasn't fragile like a flower.

Nova might have taken offense to being called fat if Noah voiced his concerns, but alas, her pride was mostly intact, only damaged by the inability to reach the birds again. The hunter's valiant attempt to soften her annoyance was met with stubborn resistance. She wasn't thrilled with finding a new area in which she didn't naturally exceed all expectations. Not being one for 'practice', she'd have to work at the skill, and that annoyed her even more.

Watching the water shift to icy rocks and the horizon beyond, Nova lifted her head to the clear air. If she closed her eyes, it almost felt like she was the griffin, each strong beat of his wings reverberating up her spine, the brush of sea breeze ruffling her hair like a mane. It made her slightly jealous, quietly wondering what other shifts might lie beneath her skin, just waiting to be discovered.

The question reminds her of Noah's presence, her eyes opening to see that she'd spread her arms to catch the wind. Lowering them, she considered where she wanted to go, which turned out not to be the rodeo. Instead, she tilted her head and said decidedly, I want to visit my brother. He's in the Greatwoods. Whether Noah could fly her there or chose to drop her off in King's End to fly the rest herself, Nova would find a way. She got the feeling Vesper needed her, and she wanted to see him.
She was fragile like a bomb.

That’s a longer flight. He told her plainly. His breath was steady again in the clearer air, but the burn in his shoulders was already beginning to build. This form was powerful, certainly, but it was not meant for transport. I can carry you part of the way. Not all of it.

The sea swelled beneath them but Noah lifted his eyes to the distant suggestion of greener land. He could feel her curiosity simmering beneath her earlier frustration. It brushed him like sunlight through leaves, the feelings just small touches of something different across the attuned bond. He banked them toward a broad outcropping where the wind ran clean. The smoke was all behind them at this point.

His wings pushed harder for a few strokes, the coastline shrinking behind them as he committed to the plan, taking Nova as far as he could in this form.
