Soh watched him go, tucking her knees to her chest and feeling suddenly cold as she sat in the sand. It had been an odd interaction, one that left her feeling uneasy. It was like the bandaid had been ripped off, old wounds reopened, and she found herself drowning in the swell of emotions that she'd thought long since buried.

Anani wrapped herself around Soh's shoulders, chiming softly as her bonded shivered. The Luminary reached up to scratch under her chin. "I'll be okay," she whispered, but at that moment, she wasn't quite sure that was true. And for a long time after, she sat on the beach, staring out at the unforgiving sea.
