Though Caiside had only gone a few steps, he would suddenly find himself in a place quite different from the woods he had been in. He would also notice he was no longer a stag and was fully naked.

On the bright side (maybe) he was surrounded by the small hoard of spriggan-bastards who had apparently taken a liking to him. On his face were markings in gold around his eyes—like small hand prints—which allowed him to see them. All of them, about 6 or 7 in total, all squatted down in the bushes with him, all equally naked. Their bodies were youthful though without sex, eyes large, teeth larger. Holding out hands with a texture like bark, they huddled around him, hands placed on various parts of him for reassurance, the way small children often do.

"They have taken your friends Caiside. Into the pits." One said in a fairly conversational tone.

Caiside was beginning to get used to stepping into places he wasn’t expecting. Or maybe he was expecting it, simply because of the voices, the creatures, calling to him. Either way, he was more curious about the place he had stepped into, the way he had been shifted back to his human form. Upon noticing his nakedness, a hand went up to his head, feeling for the broken crown he’d been gifted earlier.

With his immediate self taken stock of, Caiside turned gold eyes around him, taking in his strange new companions, his hands moving to each face in turn before looking at the hands on him, a faintly amused confusion on his face, the expression growing more severe as one of them spoke to him. Caiside held his tongue a long moment, considering his words, the questions he had. Wondering if this was somehow still a trick.

”Who are they? And... all of you?” Once his trepidation was overwhelmed by his curiosity, he had nothing but questions, questions that Caiside couldn’t stem the flow of. ”What is the pit? And... what about Jigano? He was still nearby, is he... is he alright?”

"The fae." One said simply with a shrug. "Delah and her army. Most are fae, some are wild fae though. Those are the scariest ones."

As he asked of them, multiple pairs of eyes turned towards him flashing needle-like toothed smiles in his direction. "We are the children of the woods." They answered in eerie unison.

"The pit is a pit, silly." The one nearest Caiside said, taking strands of the elk-man's hair and beginning to plait them together. AThe mention of the bard drew a few sighs and childishly shrugged shoulders. "The white bird? We did not come for him. Only for you."

The answers to his questions were less than helpful, only serving to leave Caiside more comfused. He knew of fae, at least, had known of fae, whatever these were seemed to be another bastardization of the familiar. ”What is the difference between the fae and wild fae?” Anything these creatures described as ‘scary’ has to be the real deal, considering their apparent power.

Small hands in his hair relaxed Caiside somewhat, distracting him from the unnerving way they, the... children of the forest, had described themselves. He even smiled when one pointed out the obvious answer to his question, and tried again. ”Why are they putting people into the pit? Just to... hold them, or something else?”

Worry spiked in his chest for his friend, but there was nothing he could do about it now. Wherever he was, Jigano was beyond his reach, but hopefully safe. ”Why did you come for me?” Caiside repeated the deliberate wording, wondering if this was the pet where things came crashing down around him.

"You know." They chime brightly, one pulling at Caiside's ear and another twisting strands of his hair that have not been included in the braid.

Little fingers stopped for a moment as grins spread mischievously across their faces. "For feeding of course." They answered, small shoulders shrugging.

One of the creatures came quite close to Caiside, reaching out and capturing his cheeks in tiny willow-y hands, and smushing them forward. Pressing their face against his, they smelled of lilac and juniper, of glacial ponds and windstorms. "We see you Caiside. What you once were. You are one of us." They said, pressing a quick childish kiss to his lips and then pinching his cheeks for good measure.

He knew? Caiside was fairly certain he didn’t, but the words were said with such confidence that all he could was smile and nod in agreement. He could assume, though that wasn’t quite the same thing it would have to be good enough.

”Feeding? What is being fed?” The mention of an army should have clues him in to the seriousness of the situation, but Caiside had been hoping the pit was merely a punishment for their trespass into the forest. ”Thank you, for keeping me from that fate. I haven’t said that yet, have I?” Despite the worry in his heart for his friends, he was glad to be outside of danger, at least from that specific fate. Hopefully he would be able to do something from outside.

The encroachment on his personal space made Caiside want to lean back, away from the hands that held him, but the words bound him fast, his eyes widening in surprise and wonder. ”You know? You can-“ His words were cut off by a kiss, the smell reminding him of home so much his heart ached for an entirely different reason. ”Is there... is there a way I can regain that? Here?”

"The tulmhainar silly/" They said with a laugh as if Caiside had been asking something like what colour is the sky? "Mmmm, that's okay." Said the one playing with his hair, small fingers clutching at his earlobe for a moment.

"Yes, but SHHHHH." The one nearest to him said, their large round eyes widening further as they pinched his lips closed with the childish confidence that somehow he'd be forced to submit. "It's a'commin! Come on Caiside! They can't see you if you're with us!" And with that the small sprites rose, gold dust falling off of their strange bodies as they darted out from behind the bushes, moving from tree to tree with incredible speed. With them though, Caiside would find that he too could move swiftly. That he too shed gold dust. And, had he a mirror, he would notice that his eyes too were becoming larger, his skin more like bark and leaf and stone.

Though they’d been annoying, and felt like an intrusion at first, Caiside found he was growing more comfortable with the little hands on him. It was almost soothing, in some strange way, to have so much contact with anything else. ”Tulmhainar...?” He repeated softly, trying to recall the name from anything else.

Being forced told to shush, and then to follow came unexpectedly, but Caiside found he didn’t want to disobey. As curious as he was about the tulmhainar, or whatever other danger they were running from now, he was still more curious about the sprites, what they were, how they knew him.

Rising quickly, and sparing a brief glance around, Caiside followed the trails of gold in the air, delighted to find that he could keep pace, could stride from tree to tree as if it were once again his domain. A giddy, delighted laugh threatened to escape him, his hand coming up while Caiside ran to cage his jubilation behind a palm. He’d already avoided capture, or worse, thus far, it would be stupid to invite now.

Flitting happily they raced. The fae around seemed completely unaware of the bodies that whirred by in a rush of gold and feathers. With bright peals of laughter that went unheard by the popular at large, the small group of sprites led Caiside on a merry chase, weaving in and around the Sidhe Village.

"Come Caiside! Come and see the tulmhainar!" They encouraged, their small voices like a whistle on the breeze, their feet pinwheels of motion.

Racing with prolific speed that Caiside could never have achieved on his own, they made their way into a thick mangrove of trees, coming to an abrupt halt. With little chests rising and falling as deep breathes were taken, the placed fingers against lips to indicate quiet. Taking dramatically large steps in an effort to move stealthily (this seemed entirely for show however), they paused at what appeared to be a dense thicket, as if the trees had been planted specifically as a barrier.

"Ready?"

Seeing how their chase seemed to go unnoticed by the people in the village, Caiside let the joy inside him pass through his lips, bright peals of laughter trailing after him. His head swivelled around, taking in every bit of the village that he could, though his gaze always returned forward, towards the trails of gold, the encouraging voices. Something about what they said didn’t seem right though, Caisides expression suddenly marred by a a crease in his brow. ”Weren’t you afraid of it?” He asked, his voice ripped at by the wind, but his feet not faltering despite his confusion.

They stopped at a dense wall of trees, Caiside killing the rest of his questions in his throat when the sprites gestures to be quiet. He mimicked their sneaking, albeit far more effectively, and followed them deeper into the growth. Curiosity overrode whatever worries he had, and he nodded. This was as ready as he’d ever be, but... ”Just to look.” He said softly, wanting that confirmation to be verbal.

"Afraid? Whatever for!?" They chant with laughter.

Grabbing each of his hands in theirs, the sprites tugged him into the grove of trees, ignoring the warning or recommendation he had tried to give them.

Within the wall of trees was a world all unto its own. A waterfall splashed downwards from invisible heights, the grasses melt into moss with a river running through, and though it is clear the ground couldn't possibly support it, there is a gulf of oceanic depths that you are fairly certain is miles deep.

At the centre is the tulmhainar and Amalia. A creature of massive stone and earth, Amalia is no larger than the size of one of its eyes. What Caiside will see however, is a glow that connects Amalia's heart directly to the creature's mouth and it appears to be sucking and siphoning whatever this light is meant to represent from her.

Whether he is ready or not, Caiside is led deepeningo the trees, to see whatever beast the fry have hidden away. Instead of whatever terror he had imagined though, the sights behind the thick trees is a santuary that surprises him. It’s beautiful, the scene the most magical he’s seen since leaving home.

And at the center of it all, nearly sending Caiside to his knees, is what he can only assume to be the tulmhainar, though he would call the creature more simply Mother. Perhaps not her in her entirety, but certainly an aspect of her. It’s enough to make him want to step out, reveal himself and be allowed to prostrate before the the creature, but he catches sight of the woman before it, and the strange interaction going on between them.

In her human form, Caiside does not recognize his fellow loreseeker, but concern still spread itself across his face. ”What is it doing to her? Does she... need help?” He asked, turning to glance at his sprite companions. His relief at seeing something so close to his goddess is ruined by his concern now, and he does take a step forward, not sure if he can interrupt, let alone if he should.

"Eating of course!" The sprites trill, lazily playing with his hair with a casualness that indicates they have seen this often enough before that they are not awed by it.

They don't stop him, but their whispers grow silent as Caiside takes a step forward. "He will eat you tooooooo if you go." One says, drawing nods of agreement from the others.

Eating... her?” Caiside stared at the scene, still not comprehending it. ”It’s going to kill her?” The sprites seemed unwilling to give him a straight answer to much, but something like this couldn’t be misconstrued. Could it?

The fact that one step was enough to silence the sprites kept Caiside from taking another one. ”Shouldn’t we... help? Why are we here if not to help?” Caiside tore his gaze from Amalia and the tulmhainar to look around the sprites, his head cocked.
