The Last Step was as close to the House of Midnight as Flora had made it.

What was even more absurd than being out in the middle of King's End during Deepfrost was the fact that Flora wasn't even sure if her mother had made it home yet. For all she knew, Hotaru could be in Halo still, or frothing purple foam up in Stormbreak. Still, it felt important to try, even if this was as far as she managed to get.

Having climbed the winding staircase before the snow had begun to fall, by the time it was threatening to cover up her tracks with big fluffy flakes, the Doubletake was lost in her own thoughts. Bundled more or less appropriately with a large chunky scarf that covered her lips and the tip of her nose, Flora stared blankly up at the stars overhead, blinking away snowflakes that tried to land on her eyelashes.

Lena wasn’t frequently out of Stormbreak in the evenings, but wandering over to King’s End market to grab a few spare items had put her well beyond her usual time allotted. Hurrying home would’ve been the right notion as the sun began to set, but curiosity compelled sometimes at the strangest of hours, and with Mittens behind her, they flew along the horizon lines, hovering over snowbanks and in between beckoning stars, intending for glimpses of things not yet seen and legends come to pass.

Though the latter wasn’t exactly the case; she didn’t witness any leagues of tall tales, but a staircase reaching into the sky – and then nothing at all. She might’ve passed right over and continued onward, had there not been someone on top of the stone portions, and worry bit at her immediately.

Landing precariously upon the opposing end, not wanting to intrude but certainly close enough to warrant any attempts at catching, she shifted from her parrot proportions into her more regal, Caretaker form – clutching her bag to her waist as Mittens grumbled nearby, hovering and glaring. Her voice was forthright, honest, but compassionate too, tilting her head back at the stranger. “Sorry to bother you,” she offered gently. “But are you all right?”

Of all the things to break the tumultuous waves of her thoughts, a parrot wasn't what Flora would have predicted, and yet as she blinked her eyes into focus at the sound of softly flapping wings, she was treated to a spray of colour before the slender silhouette of a woman formed against the darkening sky.

Ruffling a hand through her curls to remove some of the snow which had started to accumulate, Flora at first frowned at Lena—why wouldn't she be alright?—before realizing that her choice to come and sit up so high all on her own likely seemed strange. "Sorry, yeah" Laughing a touch awkwardly before flashing the attuned an apologetic smile, the queen shrugs. "In my head this seemed like a super thematic and cool place to sit, but I guess it might not actually look like that." Wrinkling her nose, Flora glances over her shoulder where, off in the distance, the lights from the House of Midnight twinkled rather cheerfully through the haze.

Reaching into her pocket for her compass—who was she kidding, she wasn't going to trudge through the snow to go confront her mother all on her own like this—Flora glances back to Lena with a slight frown. "Do...I know you? You look super familiar." Of course she and the caretaker had been present together at any number of large gatherings, but... "Wait. You were there in the desert a few seasons okay, right? When those weird bone monsters came to life?"

Super cool and thematic hadn’t been what the Caretaker was expecting at all – so she couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh, all right. Sorry. I tend to be a bit of a worrier.” If the woman wasn’t immediately going to try and jump off, but instead had hastened to brood, then that calmed Lena’s nerves, shaking her head and placing her bag down, realizing she probably wouldn’t be needing her healing staff at the moment.

Figuring she’d be off and on her way to leave the other alone, she didn’t expect the inquiry. “I don’t think we’ve ever been formally introduced.” She gave a sweet, serene smile, and extended her hand out – gaze only narrowing slightly as she tried to pinpoint the Accepted as well. “I’m Lena. Caretaker of the Celestine.” Usually that rang a few bells; she was often in the background, hustling every which way.

Her gaze widened at the next question – mind tracing back to those moments of bones parading along the ground…and Zavien trying to play fetch with them. “Yes. That was an amusing time. Were you there too?”

"That's actually really nice of you. I feel like most people would have just walked right on by." The apologetic amusement on Flora's face softens somewhat as she offers the attuned a genuine grin, before Lena's introduction has the queen's mouth dropping with recognition. "Oh. You're uh..." No, not just the Celestine's Caretaker. Colour bloomed in Flora's cheeks, likely quite visible despite the darkness and the way her scarf was still snug around her face. "..you're one of Koa's friends. I remember him talking about you." Often, as it happened.

"I'm Flora. From...Torchline?" Breaker of your friend's heart? Queen of the islands beneath Stormbreak? Daughter of 4 demigods?

Chuckling at the memory, the Doubletake rolls her eyes with feined exasperation. "Yeah, but I didn't stay long. Someone there got themselves killed by being stupid so I teleported her home for my dad to heal." And by heal she meant bring back from the dead, but you know. Semantics.

It’s unfortunate that many would walk by someone who may or may not be in an unhealthy state, though before she could respond, there were other inklings afoot. Like Flora, Queen of Torchline was before her, and had somehow, in one way or another, had been talking with Koa. Thoroughly unaware of anything occurring between the two, her grin remained, trying to parse around delicate topics like recent deaths, but glad to see the young woman was still alive, despite the information passed within. “Oh, yes! Pleased to meet you. Do you know Koa well?” Seeing as how the Dragoon had never told her anything…she figured that might be a safe topic. Alas.

And apparently what she had found amusing (chasing after orbs and watching Zavien be foolish) had other consequences, and her smile faltered immediately. “I’m so sorry to hear that. I didn’t see any of that transpire,” she intertwined her hands, mulling over the circumstances. “A good thing you were around to help. Are they well now?” Presuming Ronin had taken care of it was one thing – but death had its way of still stinging.

"Uhm.." Flora's surprise continues, though she does her best to try and disguise the way her stomach clenches as something ugly begins to shift in the back of her mind. Koa had mentioned Lena to her; had she just imagined what they were to one another? Had she never meant enough to him to merit talking about her to his friends...? Clearing her throat and forcing her smile to brighten, the queen shrugs. "We dated for a hot second." That wasn't even strictly true, but it was far easier to say than we fooled around on and off for months, fucked up the timing, he was the first person to ever say he loved me and then I broke his heart.

"Oh, no don't be. She did it to herself." Not for the first time Flora wonders whether saving Maea's life had actually been required of her. "Honestly? No idea." She replied, wrinkling her nose. "We don't..uhh...run in the same circles, I guess you'd say." Which again was easier than saying Flora thought Maea was a bitch who'd weirdly insulted her once when she was out on a date.

"But anyway.." Moving to stand, the queen brushes snow off of her pants and then her shoulders, squinting at the House of Midnight in the distance. "..I should probably go, or at least, find somewhere less worrying to sit." Waggling her compass in her hand as if to indicate she was about to leave via magical means, Flora lifted her eyes to the caretaker and smiled. "It was nice to meet you. Thanks for stopping to check in, that was super kind of you."

And the with a push of a button, she was gone.
