Some nights, Alys slept dreamlessly, blissfully oblivious, for a while, to the world around her. Tonight was not one of those nights.
Lying aboard the Peregrine, she tossed and turned restlessly beneath a light blanket. Nightmares plagued her, full of violet yetis with too many eyes and crimson splashes against the snow. She woke time and again to reach for Sascha, only to remember that the little ursur still roamed Mort’s halls. Whenever she slipped back into sleep, it was into the same nightmare, or into a new one, all of which seemed to feature an ever-watching gaze and the deaths of those she held most dear.
Eventually, she fell into a fitful sleep. For a while, she didn’t dream at all, and yet still her brow was pinched with worry and her heart raced in her chest. She was dimly aware of being asleep, or so she must have been, for when she woke, it seemed that time had passed. And this time, she’d seen something new…
