BASTIEN
i am the remedy to your heart,
Times were tough.

The fall of the barrier and introduction of the Fae was not exactly a bad thing, but it had certainly raised the tensions around Caido tenfold. People were fighting, opinions and traditions forced to clash when coming into contact with new ideas. It was a time of change, not unlike the one he'd lived in back on Earth. And change inevitably came with some displeasure.

To add to it all, Zariah had now decided to declare herself Queen. Bastien had never been fond of monarchy (or many structures at all) in the first place, but he had a particularly low opinion of the woman who had dared to be so cynical and dry in his Sanctuary.

With all of this, he felt an irrepressible urge to paint. And he thought, so may others. Art was a fantastic way to let out frustration and art made at a difficult time was usually the most beautiful of all.

He laid out a table of paints, clay, wood, tools...whatever anyone wished to use, and another table was practically obscured with bottles of whatever alcohol he could scrounge from his old supplies as well as a new crop from Remi. It was looking to be a fun night, ideally one that could lighten some spirits and inspire some hidden creatives.

Invitations were sent out to all the guild members, but this event would be better if it was more open, so he also put a note on the door for the days leading up to it (it would be a night time event, for his own ease and for the romance of it all). The note read:

FRIENDS OF THE HOLLOWED GROUNDS
The Artist's Sanctuary would like to welcome you to arrive at dusk on Friday night to partake in a night of free spirited creativity. Turn your frustrations, worries, fears into beauty and feel the healing powers of creativity deep within your soul (as well as the equally healing allure of plenty of alcohol).

No Launcelyns need attend.

As for himself, Bastien set out a large canvas and using the magical paint he had received, began to simply make brush strokes without a plan, seeing what his emotions would bring out of him.

In hot pink ink with sparkles (where from? nevermind), a large e was added to the sign.

"If you're gonna be exclusory Basty-boy, at least spell it right." Edy hummed with a cheeky grin, Bobi at her heels. Folding her arms, the Launceleyn-girl skipped away from the artists hoble, or whatever it was now.

Once upon a time Bastien had been cool, or so Edy had thought. But he'd turned out to be precisely the same as he was in bed: all talk, no follow-up.

A party? She doubted it.

When Bastien first saw Edy his initial reaction was to smile, then he remembered that she belonged to the same family as Zariah (bizarre, really, given their differences in temperament) and his face settled into a more neutral curiosity. He wasn't sure if Edy would have helped her relative or not and for the moment, would not try to make her leave.

Easily laughing at her corrections, he shrugged. "You know, in some portions of history, revolutionaries have refused to learn the correct spellings of rulers names as a sign of disrespect. But...ah." He shook his head and splayed out his hands. "In this case, I did simply make a spelling error."

It turned out he didn't have to wonder if he was to kick her out or not, because Edy left on her own steam. Bastien continued to paint, waiting for a guest with less attitude.

Rexanna had done a great deal to soothe the bard's anger at Bastien's false funeral during Long Night, but that didn't mean the bard had come around to liking the pompous barkeep-turned-cult-leader-turned-artist. What he did approve of, though, were all the little ways dissent could be expressed and fomented, and he appreciated the newly-Ascended's streak of rebelliousness. That was worth encouraging, at least in the current regime.

The problem was that Edrei had a habit of popping up at even a whiff of insurrection, and Jigano was too busy to spend much time in jail yet. Nor did he want Rory to do anything rash or desperate on his behalf... So coming as himself wasn't really an option. Unfortunately, as careful as he usually was with his transformations, the fiery Launceleyn girl knew at least two of them, and he wasn't exactly subtle...

But he had once been a master of disguise, and he hadn't lost his touch entirely, he hoped. Cleaning up afterwards was going to be a pain in the ass, but at least it was warm enough for a swim to be pleasant rather than punishment. A white raven could be turned black with a liberal application of ashes rolled and rubbed into his feathers, and a few other ravens joined him in his drybath so they could all be dusty together, none standing out more than the others.

So it was that an unkindness of ashy ravens perched outside the Artist's Guild waiting for sundown, croaking quiet little sleep-sounds at each other until Edrei had came and went on her way again. One of the birds, dusty-black and bright-eyed, dropped down to swoop in through the open front door, flapping towards a window at the back of the room. She examined the latch with wicked eyes before using her clever beak to undo it, pressing her considerable size against the glass to crack it open. A few moments later a swirl of black feathers made their way into the sanctuary from an empty and unwatched alley - though one raven remained perched on the roof outside, keeping watch and ready to alert those within should anyone approach the door.

A second remained outside the window, a piece of night that settled himself to keep an eye on the getaway route under the deft mental compulsion of another raven within the Sanctuary itself.

The three birds inside cocked their heads at Bastien almost in unison, shedding a little ash and dust as they did so. Then two of the birds flew to knock a canvas onto the floor so its face was flat enough for the third to take a brush in its beak and glop it into a jar of blue paint. Hopping to the canvas he tilted his head and began to wiggle the brush around, and a moment later a second raven joined him with a paintbrush in red, the two hopping around each other in an odd little dance as they laid down squiggles of modern art, croaking quietly to each other around their paintbrushes. The third raven stalked among the other art supplies, keeping a sharp eye out for anything shiny it might grab to add to the creation.

At the noise of bird wings beating outside, Bastien lifted his head from his work, but did not immediately see anything. Shrugging, he got back to work. For a moment he had hoped the sound may had been the arrival of Remi, but when the Alchemist did not appear he supposed it was probably for the best anyway. He had accidentally come off rather harsh towards the young man at the reveal of the notice and it would be best if they had some time apart surrounding the subject.

Then suddenly a bird flew in and rather purposefully headed to the back window; Bastien was so surprised all he could do was watch, amazed as he saw her undo the latch. Was this some kind of evil sorcery set about by the Lanceleyns? If it were, he was not sure what the end goal was. As the other birds entered he mumbled something to himself that was halfway between an exclaimation of surprise and a groan of irritation (there would likely be a lot to clean up).

But the most amazing thing was yet to come; he watched stupidly as the birds began to paint. Stopping his own work, Bastien kneeled down to watch, wide eyed. This had to be an Attuned, right? Feeling rather silly speaking to a bird, he asked: "Hello...? If you have a human form you can appear as yourself here. I promise to keep you safe."

The two birds who had been busily pushing paintbrushes around the canvas with their beaks paused in their work when Bastien spoke. In eerie unison they turned their heads to look at Bastian, unblinking. The raven on the art supplies table let out a derisive caw of amusement, a single word making its rough-voiced way from his beak.

"How," it managed, clever tongue shaping the word before it flapped over to the guildmaster's canvas to perch. The pair with the paintbrushes made quiet little croaking noises at each other, then went back to tracing their abstract designs around each other, their feet tracking the wet paint in slender-toed tracks along with the smoother lines left by the brushes. One of them kept a surreptitious eye on Bastien while he merrily went about his artistic task, while the other seemed wholly focused on adding more color from her brush.
