Remi was investigating.

The labyrinth didn’t seem to be like a big deal to him. Having wings always helped elevate him (literally and metaphorically), and so whatever dangers the hedge-maze presented didn’t heavily weigh on the man’s mind.

Even so, there was an odd...stirring inside of himself as he flew in slow and lazy circles before the entrance to the maze. It was probably some predatory instinct deep within himself, but one he wasn’t ready to ignore. Sweeping lower, the hawk tilted his head slightly to listen.

Was that a cry? Amber eyes–normally so pale green–now scrutinize the scene below. A flash of material? Or was it a creature? This land was so unfamiliar that even Remi’s keen senses were suddenly thrown out of whack.

Still, his hunt for herbs forgotten, Remi glided over the entrance of the maze keen to try and discover what it was which had originally caught his attention.

Mom's could be so annoying, and Beatrix was at her 9 year old wits end with hers! Don't go out by yourself, what are you doing, keep an eye on your brother, blah, blah, blah! If Neron were here he would let her have fun but mom was just being a big pain in the butt scaredy cat. If this place was so new shouldn't they go out and look around? Well, yeah if you were a grown up mom would say but not her cause she was still little. Uh, last she checked she was nine! That was pretty darned big!

So when she was busy dealing with Jace, she snuck put to have fun and look around!

This place really was weird. It was so...lifeless in a lot of ways, like the scene in a scary story. Beatrix loved scary stories. Auntie Edy told them the best cause she did the spooky voices. Without trying to hard the girl happened upon the labyrinth, staring up at it wide eyed. Well this was cool! A squeak caught her attention and she looked down at her feet, gasping when she saw the cutest little squirrel! "Well hi there!" She said brightly. The squirrel's nose twitched. Bea was surprised to see it didn't run. How odd! "Aren't you scared?"

"No!"

Her eyes widened. "You talk!" She said in surprise.

"Yes! Follow me! it said, before scampering into the maze.

Well now how could she not follow that?! Without hesitation Beatrix chased after the squirrel.

A squirrel and a young girl.

That was a rather odd pairing. What made it even more surprising was that it sounded as though the squirrel was speaking. Remi knew only a small amount about magic, but he was pretty sure that it started to manifest roughly at the age that the young girl below was. Perhaps it was some sort of illusion magic? Honestly he couldn’t even really hazard a guess; magic would likely always be something that he failed to understand.

Magic squirrel or not though, Remi could feel his stomach give a pang that indicated hunger. Squirrels weren’t terribly good sources of food, but they were usually easy enough to catch. Especially from his top-down view of the labyrinth as it was, surely it wouldn’t be too hard?

Gliding above Beatrix, Remi kept his keen eyes peeled for any other rodents that might be scurrying around. If the child had decided to work her magic on that particular creature, likely she wouldn’t enjoy it very much if he turned it into his lunch.

Beatrix chased the squirrel through the maze, joyously ignorant of the trouble she was getting herself into. A couple of times on the straight-aways she got herself going a bit too quickly and ran right into the sides of the maze, unable to stop herself fast enough. The squirrel would pause and wait for her before scurrying on. “Hey where are we going?” Bea called out to it, her breath a little ragged from running so long like this.

”Follow me follow me! the squirrel would shriek back, continuing forward.

Was that all it knew how to say? Yes, no, and follow me? Well that wasn’t very helpful. It was still a talking squirrel though and she still wanted to see where it led, not yet aware just how lost she was getting in the maze.

Strange...

The creature continued to speak and draw the child into the maze. As Remi circled above, his shadow following alongside Beatrix 's, he narrowed his golden gaze cautiously. His hunger forgotten, now Remi was merely intrigued by the display below. Though the small creature spoke in a tone that seemed entirely sure of itself, the haphazard paths that it took suggested anything other than benevolence or omniscience.

Besides, why would the creature be leading the small child deeper into the maze anyways? What could possibly be there?

Though Remi was high above, the growth was far too dense for even his keen vision to see through it. Whatever was at the heart of the maze was entirely veiled from view, and though the bright trills of the squirrel were as reassuring as ever, Remi was anything but.

A rustle here. A chitter there. The squirrels run, and play, and lead...

And the hedges got up and moved. The way behind Beatrix would be nothing more than a wall of thorns when she eventually turned to look. Oops.

Beatrix heard the unusually loud rustling of leaves, which drew her attention away from her adorable friend. The girl looked behind her shoulder and gaped. The…the wall moved? She bit her lip and approached the thorny mass of tangled vines, unable to see through to where she had come. Uh-oh. This didn’t seem good. Fear started to bubble up in her tummy. How was she going to get out now? “Did you do this? Make it go back!” Beatrix said to the squirrel that was waiting behind her.

”No! Follow me!” the squirrel squeaked, running off again.

“Ah! Wait! I want to go home now open up the wall Mr. Squirrel!” Beatrix said worriedly, scurrying after the talking squirrel. She was going to be in soooooo much trouble.

Watching in mute surprise as the hedge all but shifted, Remi circled lower until he was only about 5ft above Beatrix. As she called out for the squirrel to take her back home, the sinking feeling in Remi's stomach grew even weightier.

Something was definitely not right.

From somewhere off to his left nearer to the centre of the maze, the alchemist was quite sure that he'd just heard a roaring sort of sound. Tensing, the hawk circled lower still, crying out towards the child. His voice was piercing and distinct, and though she'd already been misled by one animal, hopefully she could be persuaded to follow another. From his vantage point he thought he could see the exit well enough, and shifting maze or not, he thought he could guide her out.

Crying again, he flew slowly in the direction that he wanted her to go. Coincidentally, it was opposite from the squirrel.

Beatrix stopped in her tracks when she heard the screeching hawk. Well, it certainly didn’t talk but…the girl looked back at the frantic squirrels that definitely wanted her to go the other way. The squirrels had gotten her into this mess, and it scared her to think they would keep her in here or something worse. She bit her lip and tugged on the hem of her tunic top. Maybe it would be better to go another way? So she looked up and started to follow the bird instead.

”No no no! Follow me! Follow me!” the squirrel squeaked, chasing her. Then another joined it. Then another. And another. And another. Until suddenly a horde of talking squirrels were chasing Bea. She shrieked and tried to run faster. “Go away! I don’t want to follow you anymore!” she shouted at them.

That the girl had decided to follow him was a relief. She was moving far more slowly than he would prefer, but that was both the burden and the benefit for having wings.

The sound of tiny and tinny voices from below made the hawk sweep in a tight circle. At first it was just a handful, but soon they appeared to be pouring out of the maze itself. With a piercing cry, Remi descended, all talons and flared wings. They out numbered him to be sure, but hawks were a natural predator for creatures like this. Surely that would mean something.

Only it really, really didn't.

Taking out two with his talons, the remainder of the squirrels used the dead bodies of the lifeless two to try and reach higher to attack the hawk. Leaping at him, Remi had to circle higher to evade them. Still he tried to keep himself between the squirrels and Beatrix. He couldn't communicate to her, though hopefully she would keep going the way he'd previously indicated.

One tiny talking squirrel was adorable. This could not be argued. An entire army of the little buggers was absolutely straight from a nightmare. Her lungs burned as she ran as fast as her little legs could carry her, gasping for air. “Go away go away!” she yelled at the impending horde of squirrels, her fear and panic obvious in her voice. Then the hawk dive bombed the squirrels and she glanced back, seeing the squirrels refocus to attack the hawk. Oh no! She couldn’t just leave him! Launceleyn’s were fighters! So she mustered up her courage and turned around.

“You leave Mr. Hawk alone you stupid stupid squirrels!” Beatrix shouted, charging the squirrels with a fierce 9-year-old version of a battle cry. She would jump up and slam her booted feet down atop the mass, in an attempt to squash the chattering evil little talking squirrel horde. Beatrix would repeat this action. Jumping up and down, crushing whatever she could land on. Some scurried out of the way, others met their demise. “Stupid squirrels! GO! A! WAY!” She shrieked, stamping on as many as she could.

Many of the rodents seemed shocked by Beatrix's sudden presence. Indeed as her shoes crushed their tiny skulls many took note and darted away a few paces before stopping to turn back and regard her warily for a moment. Given the respite he needed, Remi cried loudly at the creatures, snapping them up in his talons and dropping them back onto the hoard.

The ones which had darted away suddenly disappeared into the growth. Taking this opportunity, Remi wheeled around in the air and flew over Bea's head, calling for her to follow.

Hopefully she would. As it turned out the rodents hadn't scurried away after all; they'd gone for reinforcements. Behind the bird and girl a wall of squirrels would appear. Each would be holding a tiny thorn plucked from the hedge maze itself.

Beatrix heard the shrill cry of the hawk and was quick to follow it. Mr. Hawk seemed much safer than the talking squirrels now. Cute wasn't always good. Lesson learned. She was panting, gasping for air, as pure terror was the only thing keeping her running as fast as her skinny legs could take her. She chanced a glance back as she rounded a corner, following the guide in the air.

Bad idea.

The wall of thorn weilding squirrels was terrifying. She screamed, trying to force her legs to move faster. "Go away!!" She screamed back at them, tears welling up in her eyes. She had never been so scared in her life. There was too many to stomp on, too many for Mr. Hawk to dive bomb, and now they had pokey thorns. "Moooom!!" She screamed, her breath hitching a bit, knowing she wasn't anywhere around but she couldn't help herself.

The desperation in Beatrix 's shrill cries made Remi's heart tumble in his avian chest. Had they all known the labyrinth was a potentially dangerous place to be the hawk might have felt less sympathy for the frightened child, but how could they have known? This was a new world, and given that the rodents below had told Bea to follow them, it wasn't so surprising that the girl had.

Still. This seemed a wildly improbable and upsetting way for both the hawk and the child to learn their lesson about this part of the world.

As the pathway expanded to once again provide a straight column for Bea to run down, Remi swooped low again, his talons outstretched to grab the closest of the rodents. Mauling them with his talons rather than killing them, he threw them back at the oncoming hoard in hopes of slowing them down.

With another cry, Remi circled back towards Bea, gliding above her and, at the next junction, trying to guide her. They were close to the exit now, and if she continued to follow him they should be free and clear in a matter of minutes.
