Remi and Vervain had agreed to meet at dawn near the border of the Woodlands. Getting up before the sun had risen to meet the huntress temporary lulled the alchemist into a false sense of calm, as if everything was alright again. They might as well have ben in Northaven, but of course they weren't.

Ianto wasn't here. Martha wasn't here, and Remi hadn't even spoken to Loren since they'd first arrived.

Nothing was the same. Nothing was alright.

But perhaps Vai could temporarily make him forget about all of that. She had a way of always making him feel better, and even though he had donned his feathers and wings and wouldn't be able to speak to her, the hawk was fairly certain that her mere presence alone would be enough to sooth and smooth his ruffled feathers.

Perched in a tree, Remi watched the mist as it hugged the trunks of the trees. The air was still brisk, but no doubt as the day went on the temperature would rise.

A shrill whistle cut through the morning air to signal the huntress and her approach. This was the first time Vai had done anything she considered true to her old routine in Northaven, and getting up in the chill of dawn and leaving for the woodland... it had her breathing easy, a deep sense of calm settling in her bones. She wore leathers and furs, the same ones she'd arrived in, and her bow and quiver of brightly flecked arrows were safe on her back.

She put her fingers to her lips to let out a second whistle as she drew close enough to spot the hawk in the branches, raising her hand to wave at him and let him know he could come down if he pleased. Vervain didn't speak, not yet - she didn't want to raise her voice and scare any game that might be around.

As soon as he heard Vai's whistle, Remi mentally beamed. For one who was normally so open with his expressions, being in a body that possessed almost none was quite the departure from the norm. Still, the warmth that spread through the hawk was more than welcome. Gliding from the tree, Remi swooped low through the branches of a few lingering boughs before his descent towards the huntress was abruptly stopped.

A hanging net had been placed and triggered by one of Remi's wings as he glided passed. Within seconds the hawk was encircled by the fabric and tugged swiftly towards the ground. The weights which held the net at the bottom crashed against his flailing wings, and though the alchemist's mind warned him not to move more than was necessary, his instincts were hard to overrule as his body hit the ground.

Though nothing felt broken, there was an uncomfortable whine in what would normally have been his shoulder. It felt as though someone had overextended the limb behind his back, cutting off the circulation and stretching the tendons holding the bones together. Letting out a piercing cry of pain and surprise, the hawk opened his beak panting with pain. Briefly he considered shifting back to his human form, but as he was unsure of the damage so far, he thought that perhaps hollow bones were preferable for now.

The peaceful morning took a sudden turn, and a frown drew Vai's brows together as Remi didn't emerge from the trees to come and greet her. She hissed in a breath at the piercing cry that echoed through the air, breaking into a run through the mist towards where she had seen him. "Remi!" she called, having expected him to have shifted back, but when she spotted the net he was entangled in (and thank goodness she'd noticed him, with the fog that still clung to everything) she realised why that might not have been possible.

Swearing colourfully, she shrugged off her bow and quiver and set them down as she arrived beside the wounded hawk, drawing a knife from her boot and ignoring the worry and fear that coiled in the pit of her stomach. "Shit. Fuck. Okay, Remi, I need you to keep as still as you can," she murmured, sounding a little out of breath from the exertion. The last thing she wanted was to hurt him more by accident, Vai reaching over to swiftly and carefully cut through the net that entangled him, being particularly careful with his wings.

Part of Remi was immensely glad for Vai's sudden presence; that was the human part. The rest of his brain however cried out in alarm and wanted to flail out at her with his talons to protect himself. In fits and starts Remi tried to keep his body still, but as the huntress began to slice through the netting he could feel his talons extending towards her. With a cry of alarm that was meant to override his body's sudden need to thrash about, Remi somehow managed to flop himself onto his stomach so that his feet would have a harder time lashing out at Vai's hands.

As he did so, the puncture wound in his back became event. Dark blood coated his tawny feathers and though it was currently the very least of his concerns, it would become more pressing once he was free of the netting.

Vai inhaled sharply at the bite of talons against the back of her hand, not that she blamed Remi one bit for it. Vai knew shapechangers, after all, and if the hawk was hurt and trapped then it was hardly a surprise for instinct to kick in. The huntress let out a long breath and purposely stilled her hands for a moment or so, as if realising she was beginning to panic as well. When she did move again it was more slowly, as if to give Remi a better chance to predict her actions, though by then he’d managed to move himself to make his talons less likely to lash out at her. “I’m going to cut you free of this,” she told him in a soft and measured tone, though at the sight of the dark blood and the wound on his back, the huntress winced.

“Something has stabbed into you though, Remi. I don’t know how much I can do for you here...” The implication being, of course, that they ought to head back to the Sanctuary and that Remi should maybe shift back once he was free - she wasn’t aware of the rest of his injuries discouraging him from doing just that. A few more nicks with the blade and she managed to disentangle him from the net, relieved to be able to tease it away from his wings and feet.

Quite without thinking - or perhaps because she wasn’t thinking (Vai was concentrating only on how serious a condition Remi might be in and how she could help) the huntress reached out to brush a careful hand across the bloodied feathers, trying to move them away to see how deep the puncture went. Instantly, a soothing warmth suffused her fingers and she felt a strange calm descend over her - before her eyes, the injury on the hawk’s back began to close, as did the scratches on her hand. Vai’s eyes widened and she withdrew her touch quickly. ”Well that’s new...”

Remi could easily hear the sound of Vai's voice but her words hardly made an impact on his mind. Flee, flee, flee. The words resounded in his mind and his body quaked with the desire to flail and in any way that he could force himself from the net. His man's mind knew that this was a ludicrous plan, but still his animal instincts continued to battle.

As the net suddenly fell away, Remi could feel his heart both stop and stutter painfully in his chest. Relief washed through him as the animalistic impulses in his mind began to quiet somewhat. Through the fog of pain and emotions his mind began to take hold of his senses once again, and vaguely he could feel Vai's fingertips against his back. As they roamed near the place where the tree branch had punctured his skin, he gave an immediate squawk of pain. The jolt of white-electric heat that bit at his exposed skin dulled, and then seemed to quiet immediately. The pain was ... gone? His mind still tensed in the absence of the hurt as if expecting it to come back at any moment.

Still on his stomach, Remi flexed his body slightly and other than the pain in his wing, he felt nothing where his skin had only moments ago been open. Awkwardly the bird tried to stand, using his wings for balance but ultimately falling onto his chest with an unhappy trill of pain.

“Sorry!” Vai frowned at the hawk’s obvious discomfort, though it seemed as though she was able to do more for him than she had first anticipated. The huntress was left staring between her bloody hand and Remi’s reddened feathers, though neither part of them bore evidence of any wound any longer. Healing? She was able to heal now? That was terrifying, almost - she knew the consequences of healing back in Northaven, but was that the same here...? Vai was drawn from her thoughts by Remi’s failed attempt to stand, his chirp of discomfort drawing a sympathetic smile from her. He’d just plummeted out of a tree - who knew what else might be wrong? She’d only healed a small cut in comparison.

“Take it easy, Remi. You shouldn’t be moving around too much, a fall like that would knock the wind out of anyone.” She sighed, glancing about and trying to figure out the best way to get him back to the Sanctuary - hunting was off today, apparently, but the outing had achieved something; Vai definitely wasn’t thinking about the strange new world they were in anymore.

Retrieving her now and quiver, she considered their options. “Would you take offence if I took you back?” Carrying a shapechanger wasn’t something one just did, and certainly not without permission.

Being carried was something that Remi did not often appreciate. Some might thing it stemmed from some masculinity complex, but that couldn't be farther from Remi's personality-type. It probably had something to do with the fact that he often felt like he was unnecessarily imposing when he asked others for help, combined with his predatory instincts to remain unburdened in this form.

But of course none of that mattered with Vai.

Trilling softly, Remi stilled himself. It wouldn't do to try and make it easier for her to pick him up; as it was, with his back to her, he was probably in the best position possible anyways. She'd be able to easily fold his wings against his sides and lift him. Still, he clenched his talons together so that he'd be less tempted to lash out with them despite the absence of the worst of the pain.

I am so sorry Vai, the hawk thought miserably, both for the wounds he'd caused her as well as the disruption to their trip.

Remi's soft trilling was all the permission Vai needed, but the huntress still gave him plenty of notice before putting her hands on him. Gently, being particularly careful of his wings, she scooped him up and got to her feet, smiling despite herself. "You aren't that heavy," she said, her tone quietly amused; she was calling back to the day when they'd first met and he'd taken refuge on her shoulder. "Mostly fluff and feathers," she joked, giving his talons the caution and respect they deserved and shifting to cradle him in one of her arms as she began to walk.

"I'd like to have a few words with whoever hung that net," she remarked as they headed back out into the morning mists, Vai frowning and using her free hand to absently smooth out any of Remi's ruffled feathers. "At least I learned I have a new skill, and I could heal away that cut."

The hawk clicked his beak together to display amusement as Vervain said he was all just fluff and feathers. That was probably true in human form as well. Though being carried on his back as if he were a small infant was a bizarre feeling in this body, given how much his wings ached, he'd far rather Vai have to help him back towards town in this form, than with his full man-weight leaning against her for support.

Chirping softly, if Remi could have shrugged, he would have. They never used nets and things like that back in Northaven; Remi hadn't even been on the look out for traps or anything even remotely similar. Clearly he'd have to be much more careful - they all would, really.

At the mention of Vai being able to heal, Remi turned his golden gaze upwards and though his avian expression was poor at communicating emotions, the subtle title of his head should have been enough to render a vague facsimile of curiosity.

Healing? Just how had Vai managed that? Remi knew preciously little about magic, but he was quite sure that the type of elementalism Vai possessed was more or less completely divorced from the sort of magic that allowed for healing?

"Yeah, you're telling me," Vai muttered as she caught the hawk's golden gaze, smirking and shaking her head. "I have no idea what happened or how I did it, Remi, but it's why you're not hurting any more. Hurting as much, anyway. I don't want to risk doing it again though, given you were dragged out of the air and thrown to the ground." No, she'd prefer to leave Remi's assessment to the infirmary once they got back to the Sanctuary.

In the meantime, though, she thought nothing of ruffling gentle fingers through the soft fluff on his chest, scrunching her nose and hiding a grin - she couldn't help it. It was like carrying a little hawk baby.

Luckily, as they continued to walk through the mist, the surroundings caught her attention. "I know a story about a city that was always misty," she said, offhand. "Need I ask if you'd like to hear it while we get you back to the Sanctuary?

Flapping his wings mildly in weak agreement, Remi bobbed his head. If he had lips with which to speak he might have asked her to try, if only because he felt so uncomfortable. But knowing Vai, if she thought that would have helped, she would have done so. No, she was probably quite right to take him to the infirmary. That thought brought a sudden cold pang; Martha wouldn't be there, but she should. She was a vet after all, and while Remi knew there were likely plenty of healers, he'd have done almost anything to be seen by his old friend.

Where was she?

Clicking his beak sharply twice to indicate no, Remi ruffled the feathers around his neck slightly as if trying to make himself look larger despite the fact he was being carried like a stuffed animal.

Vai laughed softly as he ruffled up his feathers and agreed to the story, indulging him in it and making sure to hold him as gently as possible - she had no idea, after all, what might be wrong with him. And without having had the time to get a grip on her apparently brand new magic, she didn't trust herself to mess with him.

So as they strolled through the morning light and the mist slowly began to burn off, Vervain launched into the tale, hoping to distract them both. It was a fairly optimistic story - a city trapped by mist, saved by a heroine who could walk on moonlight to get above it. Fantastical, of course, but then so were most of Vai's tales.
