Ronin had barely been able to sleep - he knew Emmett was hardier than he looked and would likely have made his own way out of the Underground, but he wouldn't rest easy until he knew. Still, he had been expecting to communicate with the rest of his hunting group that they need not bother showing up to the Underground the following day, for Emmett had managed to get home.

So when he called by the other man's abode and found no sign of him, the ex-captain became very, very troubled indeed. Packing the necessities (some food, water, torches, rope) along with Emmett's axe, he headed for the Underground at dawn and stood, brooding outside. There were still obvious signs of their exit the night before, and the stink of blood and offal filled the air.

Still, they were more prepared this time, to hunt down their missing comrade.

Welcome to the PQ to search for Emmett! There are three spaces, and the participants of the previous PQ have first dibs. If you'd like to be part of it, please let me know.

ROANA
Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Roana showed up bright and early, her own small pack of provisions and supplies on her back should they be needed. Unlike the day before, she was far from jovial, her expression serious, closed. Ronin might be holding out some hope for the young man, but she didn’t hold much herself. Rockslides were dangerous. The Underground was dangerous. Without his axe, on his own, possibly injured – it was a pretty grave scenario.

All this coming from the woman who had fallen 7 stories, been crushed by rocks, broken nearly every bone and lived to tell the tale of course.

As she approached she saw Ronin pacing, and once close enough clapped his arm. ”Hey. Soldier up. We’ll bring him home, one way or another.” she said with a melancholy smile. No man left behind didn’t necessarily mean everyone made it out alive after all. ”Phoebe is waiting at the guildhall with my boys and Remi and Aoife though.” For Ronin, this was a matter of finding one of his guild members. For Roana, there was a bit of a personal stake. Sure Emmett and Phoebe had broken up, but that didn’t mean her sister in law would have wished this on him.

DEIMOS
They believe nothing can reach us
And pull us out of the boundless gloom
Success could only be measured in so many degrees: they’d completed their prior mission, but lost another individual in the process, behind fallen rocks and caved in lanes. There was a blight in the schism, concocting a catalyst for their return – and while he said naught about caverns and landslides, the experiences of a prior peril (but then – there’d been screams, cries, and voices to follow – earlier there’d been naught but the squeaking of rodents) made him pack differently. This hunt held a different priority, so his satchel wasn’t so weighed down by formidable weapons (those were tucked along his belt), but rope, food, water, and some leftover bandages. Zuriel remained behind him, silent but monitoring, not inquiring the reasons for their return. She likely already knew and understood.

A raven had managed to grip his shoulder with its talons too, and he maneuvered along the grounds as if this was perfectly reasonable, a normal circumstance.

Sword in hand, torch in the other, the Reaper and company wandered their way back to the same lines and Underground tombs, the stretch of dawn managing to break up the shadows. It was as if they’d never left though – the stench of blood and disaster riddled through the air. It didn’t bother him – numbed long ago to any pinnacle of such a sensation; the only thing occupying his mind was the liberation of the farm-boy, the one who’d been brave enough to first hiss at the Merciless.

Upon their approach, Deimos didn’t speak a word; a simple nod granted to Ronin and Roana, an indication he was another stalwart individual fervent to head back into darkened sepulchers.

That Ronin hadn't slept meant that Remi hadn't either. His soon-to-be husband's worry was palpable and soon was shared by the alchemist who, though his relationship with the farmer had started out rocky, had culminated in a strange sort of friendship. The lion and donkey had played in the fields only a week or so before, and it was his talk with Emmett about his breakup with Phoebe that had led to the midwife staying at the guildhall. If there was to be a search, Remi was more than willing to lend all of his skills to help.

Though his hawk's eyes still possessed incredible vision, with the world still an unhappy wash of grays and blacks, Remi had lost much of his depth perception. Looking for Emmett from the skies would be a feat of interpretation, and given that Ronin had said Jigano was likely to attend, didn't seem to be necessary. Raven's eyes were not as good as his were, though in his current condition, they may as well have been.

A lion's nose though? That was still a sense unmarred by Arduinna.

The lion had left Aoife with Vai and had flown to the underground from the woodlands. Growling a greeting to those assembled, Remi gave Ronin a reassuring cracked-golden stare.

It was a far more somber group that gathered at the entrance to the Underground the day after the hunt. Jigano had spent far too much of the night up wearing himself out with worry, and only Rory's common sense and matching stubbornness had kept him from going back on his own in the middle of the night. Even so, morning had found him heading towards the Underground once more, as fast as he could travel. The sight of a familiar dark head on the street below had checked his flight, and he had dropped to accompany Deimos with a quiet croak of worry. There was no point in getting separated before they had even begun and compounding the problem, and his large, sword-savvy friend had proved his strength the day before. If they should run into anything else unfriendly, it would be good to have Deimos at his side.

The ghostly raven bobbed his head to those already gathered - men, women, and lions alike - and fluffed his feathers in concern as he looked down into the waiting depths. A good man was down there, one they couldn't leave behind, and the bard gently flexed his talons in impatience as he waited for Ronin to lead them down once more, careful not to puncture his friend's clothing, much less his skin.

Ronin managed a small smile in return as Roana approached and clasped his arm, though she was right. One way or another they would bring Emmett out of the underground. And whilst he was the hopeful one, that didn't prevent what he knew to be true from taking root. Still, the rest of the group arrived and Ronin nodded to them in greeting. "Keep your torches lit, and don't go too far on your own," he said. "Call Emmett if you feel it's safe, and be on the lookout for anything dangerous."

Without further ado he led them back down and into the dark, holding his torch aloft and pausing only when they reached the scene of the fight with the ROUS, and the walled off area where the rockslide had hit. "I think our first bet would be to try and get this wall down. If a few of us make those efforts, perhaps the rest could track one of the offshoot tunnels to see if it spreads out further, or if it's a dead end?"

So saying, Ronin set his torch down and began searching for a way to shift the rocks.

They believe nothing can reach us
And pull us out of the boundless gloom
A good soldier, the beast followed commands and orders, his torch upright, his bag on his back, the impending, foreboding omens resting along his shoulders, entrenched into his spine, contorting over the framework of his mind. Why hadn’t they heard anything? Even in the darkest corridors and routes of the last cave-in, the screams of others had bounded and echoed through, kept them going despite the constant bombardment of danger and treachery. Here – there was naught, naught but the scent of blood and death from their previous massacres. He narrowed his eyes but said nothing of his speculation, brow furrowed, back into nonchalance.

They returned to the scene of their previous hunt, and his gaze went to the rockslide. “I will help,” nodding, indicating towards the mass of boulders and stones. He stuck his torch along the wall, satchel still maintained, before reaching forward, hastening up a few more solid looking rocks, and grabbing hold of some from the top. He’d drop down again, placing the artifact elsewhere, off to the side, away and out of danger, before doing the same thing once more. Whether or not Jigano opted to stay or meander down another route was entirely up to him.

Padding astride Ronin, the lion looked at the wall with his shattered amber gaze. Emmett? Emmett if you can hear me, it is Remi. We are coming for you—hang on The alchemist yelled through their bond, his voice loudly projecting outwards, his accent so thick it nearly obscured the words, but that hardly mattered. Sentiment and friendship accompanied the mental pulse as the lion regarded the task before them. Though lions could not sigh the way others could, sigh Remi did before shifting back into his human-form; if only he could wield magic while shifted.

Starting at the top, Remi used a combination of telekinesis and earth magic to help clear the rockslide. He'd heard some of the details of the encounter from Ronin (the ex-captain had been surprisingly short on details), but the blood on the ground painted a more than vivid picture of what might have occurred in the darkened tunnels.

The raven tilted his head at the Guildmaster, all humor and wit subdued by the somber nature of their task. He heard no response to either vocal calls or in the Attuned mental bond and what that indicated, well... he chirred quietly and crouched a little lower on Deimos's shoulder. He wasn't particularly surprised when his muscular friend stepped forward to help shift rocks, but he hadn't expected Remi to shift back into his human form. Certainly the alchemist's magic was useful, but what about his lion's nose? ...Unless there was a reason he couldn't use his magic in his animal forms? It was a question to ponder another time, when their attention was not on the rescue - or, more and more likely, the recovery - of the brave young farmer.

Jigano croaked softly to Deimos and Ronin, and bobbed his head at Remi. Both men and Roana were fit and strong, far better able to shift rocks through muscles or magic than he was in any of his forms. He didn't have high hopes for the offshoot tunnels; it wasn't the dead ends he feared, but the maze-like spreading of more and more options in many directions. He was, however, other than Remi the best suited to go down one and be able to find his way back if he did end up tracing branching tunnels further on. He launched from Deimos's shoulder and flapped towards one of the side tunnels, landing as soon as the light faded to pitch darkness behind him. Only then, certain he couldn't be seen, did he shift into his python form and begin to slither along the broken ground. He moved slowly, lacking light, and having to explore his way forward by touch, but his tongue slipped out to taste the air and the pits along his face 'saw' the heat signatures of anything living nearby as he swung his head from side to side - and occasionally behind - to watch out for other predators on the hunt.

Or, gods most fortunate, a living, breathing young farmer ready to head back into the daylight.

ROANA
Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Deimos and Remi jumped to it, clearing rocks out of the way with force and magic. The bird creature that she assumed was Jigano – who else would have known about this after all? – flew down to find better paths. She could have done the same, but as rocks began to shift and clear, it seemed she might be more useful here. Not only was she strong enough to begin clearing the stone, she was smaller generally than the bigger men around. Unless Remi shifted into something smaller, she had the best bet of not knocking things down with her weight, and slipping through small holes.

So alongside the others she clambered up the mountain of rubble, carefully pulling stones free, trying to make even the smallest of holes that she could see through or crawl through to get to the other side. Time was of the essence now, and she was determined to get through.

It would take them the best part of the morning to make any headway with the rubble, magic, force and all. For every rock shifted or moved, another risked falling in its place, as if the underground were taunting them by refusing to play ball.

Whilst they worked, Jigano would be able to feel his way down a long and increasingly narrow tunnel (luckily this would not be a problem for him). Echoes all around would try to disorient him and put him off course, and whether or not they were natural was entirely unknown.

He would come across three branches away the route he had chosen, though not once would the sound of the rocks being moved reach him. Whichever path they took, none would lead immediately to where Emmett had been caved in.

At midday when there was a small gap at the top of the rockslide courtesy of Roana, Ronin called for a break. "We ought to make further headway down the tunnels," he said. "Deimos and I can stay and keep working on this - Emmett isn't behind it or he'd have called to us already. Can the rest of you take some rope, anchor it here and go and explore?"

DEIMOS
They believe nothing can reach us
And pull us out of the boundless gloom
Hours upon hours, mini rockslides and visions of caverns flashing before his eyes (no shields here, and no tentacles foreseen yet), the ways in which they could all be pummeled and massacred again. By the time Ronin called for a cease and desist, sweat had worked and beaded its way along his brow, and down his back, some of his outer layers removed and placed nearby.

During the small break, the beast wandered to his bag, pulling out the length of rope Ronin had mentioned the others requiring. It could work like string, ensuring they managed to find their way back through the maze, warren, and labyrinth of tunnels. He proffered it to whomever yearned for its sanction, meant to stay here and help their leader instead.

He took a long drink out of his canteen, then rolled up his sleeves, proceeding back to the task at hand, clambering back up to the small gap hastened by Roana, intending to make it larger and larger. Even if no one called from beyond, it might’ve been the route the farm boy had taken, and then they could follow its pathways. His hand grabbed hold of rocks again and again, bringing them back down carefully, slowly, meticulously, before winding his way back up, muscles keening, content to exert their efforts.

Given his magical abilities the alchemist was surprised when Ronin sent him blindly (quite literally) down into the tunnels. Still, not one to argue (especially not to the much more experienced soldier), Remi simply nodded. Offering Ronin a dim smile, the alchemist shifted back into his leonine form. Squinting into the darkness, the lion cautiously padded forward. He could scarcely see, even less so given his vision, but his feline instincts and surprising athleticism helped him navigate the rubble and debris strewn through the tunnels.

Emmett— The lion called out again, his voice disappearing into the darkness without so much as an echo. Emmett, come out and I swear the first thing we will do is cross that stupid line. If the boy was hurt, Remi's hope was that his poor attempt at humour and legal defiance might rouse him enough to laugh in the lion's direction, giving him some bearing to go off of.  Until then though, it was up to the lion's other senses to help guide the way.

So long as the tunnel narrowed it was easy to stay on track, in spite of the echoes around him. His duller ears as a python made it easier to tune out the echoes, focusing instead on vibrations to let him know whether anything was approaching as he continued to test the air for scent or taste of Emmett's trail. The long snake did not move in an entirely straight line due to the debris on the floor, but he managed a reasonable facsimile of one, at least until he reached the branching tunnels. Sightless in the dark, he had to explore the perimeter of the room, poking his head briefly down each tunnel until he was sure he had counted them all. Three tunnels, three choices, and none of them smelled like Emmett...

But none of them smelled like ROUSes either, for which he was grateful.

For a moment longer he considered whether to go on or go back... but if he gave up now, he would have lost the entire day. Coiling himself, he set out to the left tunnel, the one he thought would lead him closer towards the tunnel the others had been excavating. Emmett? he called tentatively, reaching out uncertainly for a strange mind he barely knew.

And then, a moment later: Remi? How far away was he? Uncomfortable as he was reaching out to the alchemist's mind, discretion won over pride as he sought to make contact with the diggers, in case they had found something in his absence.
