"Come see the puppet show, starring Ludo itself!"

She'd sent a young boy to spread the word while she finished setting up the stage. Phoebe's set design made a lovely scene: a woodland backdrop with a little bed in the corner, beneath the canopy of trees. Remi and Jorseval had managed to make the stage secure and resplendent, the flooring fixed and the curtain rod hung with expert precision. And Melita and Jiao's puppets were exceptional, especially the costume the fae had made for Ludo.

Together it is almost breathtaking in how it reminds her of days past, when her grandmother would set up a similar show, the local children rapt and enthralled. In those days Amalia had frequently acted as puppeteer, taking a silent role behind the scenes to wave around characters and play a part.

Today she will step into her Nani's shoes, as narrator and guide through the unfolding tale.

The child who spreads the word is boisterous, emboldened by the promise of sweets for service. He brings with him a growing crowd of entertained and curious human and Fae. Some of the naturals chatter among themselves, remembering when the Chandrakant matriarch would direct such things. How would this younger one fare in her shoes? In the past year the quiet girl has transitioned from a ghost to a fixture, and now there are whispers of a secondary name, the Shield of Safrin upon their tongues. Still, many are skeptical of Amalia's skills- not least of all the girl herself.

There are blankets set before the stage, and snacks laid out, baked goods of every type. Clothed in a white dress with a cloak of forest green, Amalia waits for the space to fill and for her cast to ready themselves, anxiety fluttering in her breast, excited and terrified all at once.

Welcome to the Long Night Puppet Show PQ! This PQ will be a little different and work as follows:

There are four spots for cast members. If you want to be a cast member, please add that at the bottom of your post! For cast members, I would very much appreciate if you  can post within 72 hours of each round <3

MELITA
Despite her illness, Melita had managed to conjure and concoct an amount of energetic zest for the upcoming puppet show, donning a fanciful dress, even though no one would be able to see it beyond the curtains. It was like her usual fervor, other than trembling hands, but she accounted that for the excitement and zeal; eyeing the growing crowd, the stage they’d set, the puppets they were to wield and act with. There was no sensation of nervousness, eager and fervent to perform, fingers smoothing out the wrinkles in her fabric and garb, before pinpointing their ringleader. She approached with a quiet air, a hum, a croon, beneath her breath, Fangorn at her side (wanting to enact some portion on his own, which would remain to be seen). The youth tiptoed behind Amalia, a bright smile donned on her face, spread along her features, as if she hadn’t been sick at all – a whisper ignited from her throat. “Ready when you are!” Then she hastened to her spot, saluting.

The bard had immediately been intrigued by word of the puppet show, though he was uncertain at first whether he would be welcome in its cast. Still, the words of Ludo and Edy both resonated in him, and he had wrapped his courage around himself in spite of the trembling of his hands and the anger that snapped and slithered within his heart, a temper that had no cause and that he fought daily to subdue. He came to the appointed place at the appointed time, and his baseless rage was quieted by the delight he felt at seeing the masterfully-crafted stage set up and waiting. It made it easier to hold himself steady, hands and heart both, for he had much to apologize for, and the reparations had to begin somewhere. It was a start, at least, or so he hoped.

Footsteps still soft in spite of the dry leaves that scattered across the ground like a mosaic of flame (oh, Edy, she would have loved the imagery, even as she made fun of him for his poetic bent), he approached and offered a bow to Amalia and Melita , Isuma diving from his shoulder to try and tackle Fangorn in a flurry of happy feathers and fur. "I'm ready," he said simply, and prayed that his shaking hands were up to the challenge.

The festival was...a more than difficult time for Remi and Ronin. The bright acknowledgement of all they had lost over the past year (Vanya's lantern a sweltering reminder of just how quickly things could change), as well as the looming spaces on every branch that seemed to whisper next year, his lantern will hang here, was near enough to drive Remi mad.

Luckily, there was one soul for whom the darkness had not infected, and it was around her that the alchemist wrapped his arms. Aoife cackled happily, her fingers pulling at the feathers which appeared for her benefit on Remi's arms. Nuzzling the rolls on her neck beneath mounds of dark curls, the alchemist breathed in her scent, so pure and healthy, and let it dazzle his senses for as long as it could.

"Shall we see what Amalia has planned my sweet-star?" Remi asked, his beard tickling Aoife's ear and making her blow raspberries against his cheek as an outlet for her joy. Finding a place on one of the blankets provided, the alchemist sat down with Aoife in his lap. Clapping and cooing brightly at the stage, the starry-eyed girl reached out with grabby hands to try and pluck the decorations down. "You are just like your father. Always needing to have your hands on everything, mm?" Remi hummed against her hair. Pretending to pluck one of the star-decorations down, but really just conjuring a new one in his hands, he brought it down for his daughter who, of course, promptly put it in her mouth.

DEIMOS
Deimos was not a frequenter of puppet shows – in fact, he might not have ever participated or been entertained by one. Festivals and fits of happiness, contentment, even amidst the doldrums and hanging threads, ghosts, of the Festival of Lights were not reciprocated in either Helovia or Isilme; they’d attempted entertainment purposes in the name of the God of Time once or twice. Deimos had been relegated to guard duty and brooding from the sidelines while dances, serenades, and any other spectral amusements had been conducted.

But he would come to appreciate Amalia and her friends’ efforts, despite the glaring ignorance spiraling from his depths.

The beast breezed by the snacks and grabbed a few out of habit; eyes glancing over the setup, the stage, the scene, the set design implemented in woodland forms, boughs and canopies, starring a deity. He ensured his gaze managed to land on Amalia too, a proud grin tucked on his features and a wink in her direction.

He spotted a few more audience members circling around, but out of support, intended to take one of the front-lined blankets, sitting and settling himself close to Remi and Aoife. Then he leaned back, intending to be entertained and diverted by whatever story unfolded – reflections of Fiat Lux more of a simmering notion, something they all must’ve craved since the burden of everything else unfolded over them.

Despite it all, the Harpy makes her way toward the puppet show — mind and eyes on Ludo’s puppet and the practice she had done for doing them some form of justice. It is a welcome reprieve from the chill, the tremors, the swings of her mood and downcast energy. An energy she has spent most of making the lantern for Ru’in, sharing the memories she had with him, and moving on. She doesn’t even react when she spots Melita with the Luxere, Jigano with the Lanterns. She doesn’t care enough to make any snide remarks, any retaliation, she simply wants to be a part of the beautiful event Amalia has put together.

She trudges up beside Amalia, away from Melita and closer to Jigano, flashing her motherly leopardess a small tired smile, tenderly and trembly grasping the Ludo puppet and gathering into position. “Ready, Ama.” She says quietly, dull icy gaze lingering on the rest of the puppets.

Auni meanwhile goes scouting through the audience, finding a particularly comfortable spot between Deimos and Remi and Aoife — belly toward the alchemist and daughter, should the child want a comfortable pillow. His sharp antlers pointed toward Deimos with the soft calming gilt glow.

Kiada picks Ludo! And Auni goes to sit beside Remi, Aofie, and Deimos in the hopes of pets and cuddles.

Loren was not really interested in festivities. Even before he’d gone away and come back, parties had rarely interested him. They usually just proved to be opportunities to embarrass himself in front of his family. Besides, social interactions had never been his strong suit.

But his family was mostly gone now. And this was a play—well, a puppet show, but close enough—which meant he could sit in the back and stay quiet. Even then, it wouldn’t have been enough to coax him out. However, this was apparently the story of something called Long Night. While the librarian didn’t know exactly what that was, he figured it was important that he get every piece of information he could while he could. After all, he had a lot of catching up to do.

He came in the brown hooded cloak that he’d taken to wearing pretty much everywhere these days. It helped with the cold nip in the air, that was for sure, but mostly he wore it to avoid being recognized. Unfortunately for him, he was one of the first audience members to arrive, or so it seemed: everyone else, was clustered by the stage. Remi and a small child—who Loren had to assume was related to him somehow, as evidenced by the way they interacted—along with a tall warrior man the Launceleyn had seen elsewhere were seated at blankets towards the front.

Seeing Remi, as always, was like a physical blow. This time, seeing him with the girl was like an extra twist of the knife. Loren had been intending to take one of the blankets towards the back, but this just confirmed it: he found the farthest spot from the alchemist, and the librarian gingerly sank into a cross-legged, stiff looking position. The Launceleyn was here for information, not for pleasure. While he’d intended to invite Beatrix and Jace along (assuming that, as children, they might enjoy a puppet show), Loren hadn’t been able to find them anywhere in the Manor. Seemed they were avoiding him in addition to Peter now. It was a problem, but not one he had a solution to.

So it was pretty much the same as everything else in his life these days.

She smiles at her players, grinning at each one, though dark worry lingers in her eyes. Interesting, for three blighted to bring shaky hands and uncertain tempers to the task of marionettes- but Amalia does not begrudge them their illness, is grateful and glad to afford them all an opportunity to thrive and play. She has confidence in her friends: they have rehearsed a little, and so far Melita and Kiada have not killed one another, which is more than the baker feels she can ask given their history and ill states. Jigano is a pang of bittersweet fondness, their footing still shaking but his aid appreciated, as a storyteller and friend.

Only one player remains unaccounted for, but it is not Amalia's place to rush a god.

"Ready?" she asks her assembled team, beaming brightly and clearing her throat as she steps out from behind the curtain to stand beside the stage.

"Thank you one and all for coming! I hope your festival has been merry, and that Ludo guides the path of us all." There are familiar faces among the crowd - she smiles and waves to Remi and Aoife, lingers appreciatively on Deimos - and unfamiliar ones as well. Anxiety beats a thunderstorm inside the baker's breast, makes her voice quiver a little as she continues on, her alto timbre ringing through the woods. "This year we are proud to present a puppet show put together by Naturals and Outlanders, barrier-folk and fae. Please, enjoy our tale!"

Carefully she pulls back the curtain of the stage, revealing the puppets that should hang therein: Ludo in the center, with the luxere on one side and the lanterns on the other. "It was the end of LeafChange, and Ludo was preparing for yet another Festival of Lights. Only this time, the being had a trick to make the festival truly exceptional- if it could get its friends involved!" Stepping back, Amalia waits for the players to do their parts before narrating the second act, enjoying the entertainment on their audience's faces.

She places herself, eyes drifting toward Jigano and Melita briefly, as she takes up the puppet, inhaling a ragged breath before smiling lightly, trying to be better — trying to push away the blight for this wonderful story. And she’s successful as soon as Ama opens up the drapes. She begins the tale, and Kiada maneuvers the puppet of Ludo toward the lanterns, the puppet touching and maneuvering them with a certain amount of attachment. She has never met Ludo, but she does her best to act like them, she does not want to disappoint. But from the tales Amalia has told her of the deity, she thinks she’s doing well. And she hopes they approve.

The puppet then pauses after Amalia’s narration, pausing with the rags of the puppet lifting to seem contemplative as it looks to the lanterns, then to the sky, back to the lanterns — before spinning in a small dramatic flair of flowing drapes to the Luxere, the puppets hands clasping together with enthusiasm.

She says nothing, but she hopes the crowd can see what she imagines to be a lightbulb going off.

The puppet darts from the lanterns toward the Luxere, a nearly come hither gesture for the deer puppet, a show of fun and trickery up its sleeve as she works it, aiming for the Luxere to follow Ludo to the next part. The deer are vital in this story, and she makes it seem as though Ludo is brimming with all the playful air she can muster.

An audience was nothing to alarm the bard, though his usual sleek facade was worn thin by illness and he was not sure where he stood with some of those present in it. A long-forgotten trickle of tension crawled between his spine as he looked out at those who had come for the show, and he drew in the calming breaths he had learned long seasons past to relax his muscles and put a smile on his face for them.

Those who stood behind the screens with him caused no less concern, though each in different ways. Melita, as sick and suffering as he, his worry for the daughter of summer sunshine a palpable lump in his throat. Kiada, a friend he had shoved away, who deserved far better from him than she had gotten. Amalia... the brightest light, and the hardest to face because of it, but no less loved, no less family, for the rocks he had steered their ship among.

His hands might have trembled, but at least it did his role no harm as he lifted the control bars that held the net of lanterns Melita had made, and bade them dance around Kiada's Ludo-puppet, bobbing happily about like the souls he had seen at Ludo's side the day the god had made his own lantern. As Kiada controlled her puppet to reach out to the lanterns, Jigano shifted to bring some closer, while making the others seem to swirl around behind and around the masked god's representation. His movements were not as deft as they would have been a season earlier, but he took care to keep his strings from tangling with Kiada's, even if that meant restricting his movements a little.

When Ludo scampered off to the other side of the stage to visit the luxere, the bard eased the lanterns to stillness - as much as he was able. They shook and trembled a little along with his hands, but not, he hoped, so much as to distract from the main portion of the tale now happening over on Melita 's end of the beautifully-crafted stage.

MELITA
For once, either due to the sickness, or due to the fact that this was for Amalia and Ludo, she didn’t immediately attack Kiada, or even snarl, bristle, at her (and it might’ve added a little bit of vehemence and violence to the show; a reimagining of Cloisters as puppets clashed and flew apart at the glimmer of their contempt for one another). There were too many ruminations, too many things, too many unspoken voids to even bother with now – putting all her energy into the acts, raising her puppet luxere as if they were real, tangible, corporeal enigmas. She pictured Auni, how mischief and gentleness and light corded its way through his movements and motions, she thought of the mystical, slow parading steps some of the herd embodied, she imagined the depths of Long Night and their guiding, serenading light pushing monsters away. Despite her trembling hands, the girl mustered strength in the futility of the sicknesses’ traces, drawing her fury and might into movements of strings, into an act, a pretense,

The deer were tricked, the deer were ensnared by Kiada’s Ludo marionette; emblazoned and courted by the lanterns, ensuring their little muzzles rose with the delicate flames, moths and moths and moths, drawn like sirens, starting hesitantly, then becoming all the more entranced, enchanted. They wanted to dance and mimicked the fake Ludo’s movements, some twirling, some baying, some spinning, enraptured, enticed, allured, and beguiled – their fates already sewn into stuffing and stories. So they followed, a willing herd, devout in their reverence for enthusiasm, completely caught in the web of trickery.

The scene is s triumphant one, their audience audibly infatuated by the puppets who wander across the scene. Amalia watches with brilliant fondness as her three friends work together, lending pockets of narrative but letting their hands do much of the work.

"First, Ludo asked all the people of the Hollowed Grounds to make lanterns, the most beautiful they could." Kiads's Ludo dances to the lanterns, and Amalia smiles at the interaction, laughing a little at the cheerful mischief the harpy manages to imbue.

"Next, Ludo went to the Luxere, and asked them to stand by Safrin's bed, so that she would not know that night had fallen and it was time to raise the stars." A smile for Melita, whose Luxere are agreeable and enthused.

"When the day came, the Luxere stood by Safrin-" She pauses here, to give Ludo a chance to make its entrance "-and made her think the night was bright as day. Then all the people brought their lanterns, lighting the night with flames. Ludo had succeeded in its trick, and everyone rejoiced!"

MELITA
There was success in their movements and motions, and the steadfast girl clung to all the energy she could possess, forming it into control and contortions, into a frenzy of luxere amusement. She listened to Amalia’s story, smiling beneath their veils and shrouds, hiding along backdrops and scenery as the puppets were performing and holding up to their roles. At the hints, she moved her three faithful deer forward again, their dancing, wild and free acts adding to the scene, to the trickery of dear Safrin of the stars. They willingly followed Ludo’s directions, and she stirred the rods and threads so the luxere obliged; suddenly, accordingly, standing by the goddess’s bed, ignorant to their part of the snares and duplicity. They appeared sweet, innocent, hardly a portion to the specious acts, foolishly triumphant beneath Ludo’s intentions.

Then – it was up to the aforementioned god (and the youth could barely contain her excitement – buzzing, humming under her breath).

'Safrin' poofed into existence, showering the stage, the luxere and the audience in glitter. (Had Ludo thrown the glitter? You bet).

But then the goddess was there! Or at least, a very obvious Ludo-dressed-as-Safrin was there, the ragged deity draped in a silk shawl blazing with stars. Its porcelain mask had been painted with exaggerated eyelashes and red lips, and it drifted dreamily down into the bed.

"SNORE," it said.

Safrin remained asleep, thanks to the tricky luxere.
