Be better, Amalia had told him. Finish what you start, Edrei had said, though with more swearing. Both of them were right, though it had taken Ludo's identification of the blight in his veins to snap him out of the snarling fugue he had thrown himself so willingly into. In the process of that downward spiral he had hurt many of his friends, even before he had fallen ill. Afterwards... well, even afterwards the blight was no excuse. As his talk with Amalia reminded him, he was the elder, the adult, the one who should have known better.

And now, dragging himself out of the pit he had dug for himself, he felt every season of those years being carried on his back.

His staff tapped along as he made his way to Kiada 's home, his footsteps weary with lack of sleep and his skin stretched tight from not eating except when Rory forced him to. The shaking in his hands was worse today, but it came and went in waves, like his temper. Isuma flew above, gliding a little ways ahead to land and wait for him before leading the way again, torn between worry for him and bright joy at seeing her friends again.

The tall man paused outside a door he had only been to once before, gathering his courage as much as his humility before raising his hand to knock. A paper crinkled in the breast of his overlapping tunic, his cloak neatly muffling it as he stood wrapped in grey and white fur against the chilly Leafchange day, the clouds hiding the sun and making it a bitter warning of the winter to come.

She was so cold. She had taken to forgoing the bed and blankets for moving it in front of her fireplace – curling up beside Auni, using him as a pillow that only offered more warmth to the exhausted, distraught, heartbroken girl. She had mostly done her best to stay home, to prevent everyone from seeing her in this state. But she had ventured out, gone to the meeting with Remi to offer Auni for help, gone to the Festival of Lights where Deimos had made Ru’in’s trinket for her into a wedding ring, gone to Ludo’s Shrine in its woods to ask for a sign, to see him again, for anything other than the pain of this broken, bleeding heart of hers.

And she had gotten nothing from it other than the promise of not all who are gone are lost.

She doesn’t know what’s more comforting, the fact that there’s the possibility, or the pain of never knowing.

And so the Harpy retreats again, hidden away in a too warm house, decorative knives that Deimos had crafted for her she had used the inside of her home as target practice – a space above the hearth with many varying knives were knocked into the wood, not yet removed. But a show of her mood swings, of her boredom, of her heartbreak, and her inability to do anything about it. She has become useless, a shell of a person. And she hates every second of it.

The knock to her door is somewhat a surprise, wondering if Deimos and Amalia have returned again, but no – they have better things to do than dwell on her. And she doesn’t blame them. Instead, she tells Auni to let whomever it is inside, uncaring at this point. If she dies, so fucking be it. The Luxere, somewhat apprehensively, agrees, and moves toward the door – reaching up with his large tines now to open the door and pauses briefly as he spots Jigano, head tilting back to the rumple of blankets in the center of the floor beside the flame of the fireplace.

But Kiada doesn’t move to greet him, instead she remains curled up in her cocoon of blankets, wearing hardly anything but enough to cover her most important bits – scars and wounds and blackness from the blight on full display – uncertain if it matters anymore after Delah destroyed her favorite clothes. “Do you want your books?” She asks, muffled and weak beneath the blankets. Heaving a quiet sigh, she waits until the door is closed again before she emerges from her cocoon, pushing the blankets back and revealing all the destruction the blight has wrought on her already scarred and scabbed body.

Even the wound to her shoulder from Melita’s arrow has not healed yet.

Auni was not the person Jigano had expected to find on the other side of the door and for a moment he paused, blinking down at the clever little deer. Isuma was far quicker to react, reep!ing with a mixture of happiness and relief as she abandoned her companion's shoulder to perch upon Auni's glowing antlers, patting her friend's head with gentle talons as she reassured herself that her fellow companion was unhurt.

The bard found a tired smile for their antics, offering a shaking hand for Auni to examine and then scratching beneath the little luxere's chin as he looked past the guardian of the threshold and into the room beyond.

What he saw would have broken his heart, had it not already been bruised and diminished by the weight of the blight in his blood. Gently shifting Auni and Isuma to the side he stepped within and closed the door, turning to see the full ravages of the blight upon the young warrior's body. For a moment he couldn't speak, only shaking his head in negation before he moved across the room on unsteady feet, walking stick abandoned by the door. He knelt beside her and offered his own trembling hands, blue eyes searching her own with a resigned grief at seeing his worst suspicions confirmed.

"The books matter less than you do," he said softly, wanting to reach out, to tend to the wounds that spoke so cruelly of the blight's effects on her. For Rory's sake he had fought it, and he had hidden away the worst of the outward signs as best he could so as not to alarm anyone else, but Kiada, like Ronin, appeared to be further along in the course of the disease - or curse, as Loren had described it - and there was no hiding what she was becoming. "I wanted to apologize for... for many things. For letting you down, and for being unkind. I am sorry, Kiada." He did not bother asking for forgiveness. He wasn't sure he deserved it, and regardless she didn't look like she had the strength to give it.

Auni, much unlike his counterpart right now, adores the attention and visitors, and hops from hoof to hoof as Isuma chirps in greeting and lands alight on his large, fully grown rack of antlers. Yet, the Luxere pauses just long enough to wag his nub of a tail at the offer Jigano gives him, sniffing and breathing onto his hand before scratching a slightly bearded chin, before Auni trots off with Isuma to show her the things he’s been collecting (mostly rocks and sticks, shiny pieces of dull glass, tiny flowers).

Meanwhile, the Harpy’s eyes lock with Jigano’s as she arises from the blankets, watching him approach on unsteady feet. Watching silently as he kneels beside her and offers his own trembling hands. But she doesn’t grab on, she doesn’t do anything but let her dark, defeated icy gaze linger on his hands when he mentions the books matter less than she. And for a moment she wants to scoff, to tell him that was exactly the point, but she remains silent – drawing scarred legs up under her to cross and sit, an arm reaching up to wrap around her shoulder and cover the scabbed wound on her shoulder.

But he apologizes, and her eyes lift to his pale face, a dark brow raised. She didn’t plan on forgiving him yet, but… Steps were steps, after all, and she knew somewhere deep in that pure part of her that second chances were important. She had gotten one, after all. She could spare a few for others. But she stays silent for a time, eyes shifting from him to look down onto the wood grained floor, running through the muddled thoughts in her mind.

She’s too tired to put up a fight again, wanting nothing more than to waste away in the firelight. “I accept your apology.” She tells him wearily, eyes shifting from the floor to his face again, hand dropping from her wounded and scarred shoulder back into her lap where she fidgets with Ru’in’s ring.

Thank all the gods old and new that the companions hadn't contracted the blight alongside their foolish humans. They gave Jigano hope, when he wasn't so far gone in despair to lose sight of it completely. He watched Auni trot off, savoring Isuma's happiness as she chirruped excitedly over the shiny bits of glass and interesting stones and he took strength from it. Strength enough to cross the room and give the young woman who waited there a long-overdue apology.

He extended his hands in silent supplication; a shared affliction, a rare desire for shared contact. They hung there trembling until his strength drained away and he was forced to lower them again while Kiada wrapped herself up in her own arm, covering the most grievous of the fresh wounds that kissed her skin with blight-edged lips. He had seen an arrow sprouting from that shoulder once before, in a lightless place amongst an audience of Fae, and it was wrong wrong wrong for it to still be so wide and broken. But he was no Healer, no Vai, no Sascha, no Loren. He could not fix her with a touch of his hands, had he even the energy to try. All he could do was sit and wait upon her judgment, braced for the worst for with the blight sunk so deeply under her skin she might well rage at him at any moment.

That she did not was a blessing, but her dull, hopeless voice left him aching all the same. It was more than he had any right to expect, however, an acceptance preferable to a rejection, even though forgiveness was still so very far away. A part of him was aware enough to see the parallels between what he had done to Kiada and what Loren had done to him, even down to the later apologies. He was too tired to appreciate the wry twist fate had thrown at them, though, simply bowing his head in gratitude and letting the weight of the world keep it bowed until the light struck from the ring and caught his attention.

It was a simple thing, but a point of beauty on a young woman who had otherwise gone out of her way to divest herself of all ornament, all artifice, any accessory unnecessary to basic survival. He watched her fidget with it as the light slid across it. "How long," he asked softly after a time of silence. "How long have you had the sickness?"

The curse. The blight. That darkness in their blood and in their hearts that ate away at everything they were and replaced it with... something else.

He doesn’t try to make her forgive him, and she’s thankful for that. She doesn’t have the words to articulate it, to tell him how she needs time, even if she doesn’t know how much time she’ll have left at the end of it. She can feel herself changing, feel the exhaustion that’s set deep within her bones. And she finds she’d much rather have the curse of forever drowning from Kisamoa than this terrible black tar that weighs on her soul and mind, body and heart.

His hands lower and she fidgets with the ring, watching briefly as his attention drifts to it. She has half a mind to withdraw her hands beneath the blankets, to keep her secrets to herself. But he’s already seen, and it does no use anymore. None of it matters anymore. And she slowly begins to understand all of it.

Her eyes lift to his face as he begins to ask her how long she’s had it, and all she can think of is the Cloister, when the rage at seeing Melita had overcome her – and had it not been for Amalia, she might have forgone the point of the entire trial and aimed to fight the red haired girl to the death. It’s a thing she regrets, but she’s far too tired to think up all of those scenarios too. Instead, she puffs out a quiet sigh of a breath, head tilting back toward the fireplace.

The Cloister, at least. That’s when I noticed it.” She tells him, defeated, angry, bitter about the entire ordeal. Maybe had she not been sick, she could have stood a chance against the Fae’s Chieftain. But she bites down on the retorts, looking back to his shaking hands with a dark raised brow. “How long for you?” She tilts her head.

He wondered at the ring, his curiosity dulled but not yet overcome, but prying secrets was a dangerous game with consequences he wasn't ready to risk. Not yet, at least, not with anger and blame and guilt still so close to the surface between them. The price of prying might well end this tentative truce, brokered more by exhaustion than a readiness to accept apologies so recently given; neither of them were what they had been before, and neither would likely live to be what they had been again. Deepfrost was fast approaching and answers were as far away as the moon and stars.

Even the stars were blackened by the blight-struck goddess, were they not?

The Cloister had been a day of disappointment in so many ways for so many people. He still did not regret his swift and wordless attack on Deimos, the Sword defenseless without his Shield to hide behind. He thought he had regretted what he had done to Ianto and Melita, but that had been days and weeks ago, before he had felt quite so weary of it all.

"...Before that, I think," he admitted, reluctant only in his uncertainty. "Though I'm not sure. I didn't know what it was until Ludo told me, in Leafchange." Things had been brighter, then. He had believed, still, that a cure might be found. Now... He couldn't give up. He had made too many promises. But here with someone who knew what it was like, at least he didn't have to pretend. They could focus on other things, however small. "At the puppet show... I liked your Ludo." It was a peace offering, but a sincere one. "Have you met them many times before?"

Trembling hands and a fox ring set on her ring finger, wrapped up in blankets with a roaring fire beside her. She must look as pitiful as she feels, and she feels a slow burning rage forming in her gut. She doesn’t want to be seen this way, brought down to the ash of her destruction. She wants to be what she’s always been – fierce, ferocity, flame, fangs and talons. Instead of this shell she is now, with black ringing the edges of her vision, closing in closer and closer the nearer they draw to Deepfrost.

She addresses the question to him, head tilting and listening while she swallows the venom on the tip of her tongue, in the pit of her heart, shaking it away because she knows its wrong, but she knows nothing else now. She nods, however, in response to his reluctancy. Why it had moved through her so quickly is a thought that disappears from her mind, from her core as she listens when he speaks of Ludo.

But then he compliments her Ludo, and somehow despite the anger and venom she feels, she finds a small smile creep the corner of her lips. “No, never before the show.” She admits, settling back in the blankets to cover her scars as she thinks on it. “Amalia tells me stories of them a lot, and so I used that for my inspiration.” She pauses before a thought hits her and she stills the fidgeting of the ring, eyes lifting to look further upon Jigano’s face.

But I went to their shrine, a few days ago. And they came to me.” She says almost hushed, as though it’s a secret. She wears her blanket the way Ludo felt, situated along her shoulders in mischief and comfort, finding solace in such things.

They were both so much less than what they had been. Diminished. Fading. Their light was masked now by paralyzing weariness and vicious rage, grief like a waterfall interspersed with increasingly scarcer hours of dulled emotions that at least allowed a semblance of function. Jigano regretted what he saw in Kiada, but even more he feared that he would soon be joining her in that state of deep ennui, broken only by flashes of incandescent temper, a wildfire blaze of violent emotion that only served to lash out at and wound those around him.

At least Kiada's temper was temporarily banked and she let him speak without the wicked words and snarling accusations that he had become all too familiar with falling from his own lips. The puppet show was a moment of brightness for them both, a shared triumph that even now could only bring the ghost of a smile to their lips, but it was better than nothing. "No one could have done better," he murmured, surprised but pleased that she had pieced the god's antics and mannerisms together from stories alone. It spoke highly of her creativity and the bright mind that lay beneath the weight of the blight.

The eyes that met his were dark and growing darker by the day, but he was glad that she turned to him, tilting his head in silent encouragement. An answered prayer to a the soul guide, the god of death... it was certainly the season for it. He nodded slowly, looking down at his shaking hands with a wry almost-smile as he remembered his own last prayer to Ludo. "Do you want to talk about it?" he asked, voice gentle in spite of the weariness beneath it. Shrine visits could be intensely personal things, as well he knew. Curious though he was, he would not pry without permission if it had been a painful experience for her.

He praises her, but it doesn’t hit her the same way it might have once. Instead, there’s a cockiness within her that writhes, as if to say yes, nobody could do better than her. But she swallows down the thoughts hard, finding comfort in Ludo’s part of the performance, in the rags that draped along her shoulders, in the way Auni seemed to enjoy the presence as much as any of the rest of them. Instead, she nods.

But she pauses as she tells him that Ludo had come to her, had comforted her, had given her a mission, that she holds tight to her chest. “Nope.” She tells him bluntly, head lifting with a seriousness in her red ringed, sunken eyes as she situates the blankets again. “But I’ll tell you what I asked of them.” She admits with a decidedly predatory tilt of her head.

I asked them if I could see Ru’in again. And they told me his soul hadn’t made it to Mort.” She says so casually, it’s unlike her. But there’s hope that brims in her chest, brims in her heart at the information. That maybe, somewhere, somehow, with Ludo’s help, she can see him again.

He pulled his cloak around himself, settling more comfortably on the floor near the blighted warrior woman, not trying to move closer but offering comfort silently if his presence can provide any. Her bluntness was almost enough to bring a smile to his face in spite of the seriousness of their situations and the topic at hand. It was a refreshing clarity, even if it was a refusal, and one he could appreciate. He would not have minded if she left it at that, but she continued, an almost sly look coming over her features.

He drew in a breath, not at the unknown name, but at the tale of a soul not yet bound to Mort. He bit his lip, wondering... was it a man who had not died after all? Or... was it one of those missing souls that Wessex had warned them off, the ones that did not make it out of Long Night? Or was it one of the lost souls that Ludo had warned him of? Twisted and monstrous things that weren't limited to haunting one week a year?

"There are several ways that could be taken," he said slowly, rubbing his cold, shaking hands together, subconsciously seeking warmth that could not be found. "Who is Ru'in? I don't think I've met him..." He trailed off, for that didn't necessarily mean much. True, he met a lot of people, but he couldn't meet everyone. Whether this Ru'in was Natural or Outlander, friend or family, living or dead, only Kiada could tell him.

For a moment, she’s confused, certain she’s told him who Ru’in was. And she withdraws slightly at the idea of explaining it, looking out into the flame as if she wants to stick her hand within it to feel what she had in the Rift, to feel the more physical side of the pain she had opposed to dealing with the loss of him the first time. Here, here she had no means of doing that, and so she remains silent for a moment – staring out into the flame until her blackened, shattered gaze turns to Jigano again.

Ru’in was my other half.” She says softly. “We were children in Helovia together, and I loved him. And Kaos killed him before I went to the Rift.” She tilts her head to him consideringly. Wondering if that’s where he’ll think he was lost, wondering if he’ll imagine that is why Ludo could not find him. But instead, she continues, charging on quietly. “And when I came here, he was here too. But when I left the Rathskeller to get Auni, he came there and nobody let him in.” There’s a strange strength to her voice, where before it may have wavered.

She holds her hand out in front of her, watching it tremble as such, showing the fox along her ring finger. “He left a note on the doorstep, and he asked me to marry him with this charm. Deimos made it into a ring for me. And I went to Ludo to see if I could speak to him, to tell him yes.” She’s surprisingly calm as she says it, but she tilts her head as she looks to Jigano and withdraws her hand back into her lap. “But even Mort knows not where he is.

Patience was easier when weariness bore down upon his sinking soul, exhaustion dulling the edges of things and making time run strangely. He sat through the young woman's silences with a deceptive appearance of calm, though inwardly he was wondering at Ludo's phrasing. When Kiada finally spoke he blinked as if waking from a dream, focusing back on her with a slight tilt of his head.

A tale of lost love, of death and grief and incalculable pain, told in a quiet, even voice that should have broken his heart to hear it recounted so matter-of-factly. For a moment Jigano did, indeed, wonder if Ru'in's loss on another world answered Kiada's question, but she continued with the story, and he exhaled as a flicker of wonder made it through the dark. So many of those Helovians had made it to Caido, even more than those from Northhaven. So mean dead Helovians, resurrected upon Caido soil that it was beginning to feel like this really was the afterlife of Are'a ravings, at least for that distant world. How soon before they outnumbered the Naturals that were born here?

A whimsical thought that was quickly snuffed as Ru'in's tale ended in blunt, bitter death. He turned his eyes to the ring, feeling an odd tug of possessiveness at the silver fox ring, so similar to the silver fox charm he had made for Rory a year ago, and the urge to snarl and snatch it from her left him tense and shaking all over as he wrapped his hands together to keep them from such an unforgivable theft.

The withdrawal of the ring helped to center him, and so did looking at her eyes instead of the ornament upon her finger. "No," he agreed quietly. "The souls of those killed by monsters during Long Night do not all make it to Ludo. You may thank the Ascended for that," he added, bitter and losing the battle at hiding it. "The Voice made her toys and then she abandoned them, uncaring if they broke. And so they started breaking other things in their madness."

He sighed, realizing only then that his hands had curled into fists. He relaxed them slowly, taking a breath to steady himself as he met her black-marbled gaze with his own, a wry ghost of a smile haunting his mouth. "I was looking for lost souls when you interrupted me in the Underground, calling to them with the gifts Ludo gave me for such a purpose. I plan to do so again come Long Night--" If he was still able, that was, "--and I will seek your Ru'in in particular when I do."

Her hands tremble as she tells the story to Jigano, tilting her head and looking away from him to the flame in the hearth beside her – letting the fire reflect in her icy eyes as she listens, turning her head back to him as he explains. “Mhm.” She replies simply, as though she’d known it all along, even if she had no idea. Still, her eyes fall to his hands as they clench into fists, before he puffs out a breath, a smile haunting his lips.

But she perks up at his comment, and her eyes widen a fraction. “Actually… I need you.” She says, as though it’s just finally made sense. The lantern, the song, Ludo. She chews on her lower lip slightly before she sighs, lifting a hand to pinch the bridge of her nose in frustration. “Ludo needs me to go out on Longnight, with you and the lantern and your song.” She pauses, hand dropping as her black ringed eyes lift to his. “We need to lure him out.

It was hard to talk about, and she swallows hard against the rage and despair the blight is making her feel tenfold. “And I need to kill him.” She admits, turning her head away from Jigano to look back at the flame. “Kill him, to save him.” She repeats Ludo, the same way they had said it. Haunting, heartbreaking, but she would do it. She had told Ludo she’d do anything, and she’d be damned if she couldn’t.
