AMALIA
meet me where the falling stars live
Vi.

His name is a tattoo on his mind, a repeated rhythm, a fervent prayer. She repeats it like a hymn, a heartbeat, wears it on her tongue and mind, rolls it through her thoughts. Vi has come, Vi will help.

Vi has given hope.

Amalia arrives at the Spire at dawn, having decided the best time would be daybreak, when perhaps the blighted would be subdued by the rising of the sun. In otter form (the better to dig) she settles on the ground, waiting for the friends she has requested to gather, a rose plant nestled carefully before her. Vi has given them a solution, and Amalia will do everything in her power to see that it is done, enlist all who may be able to help save their friends and their goddess.

{br}

PQ for Attuned characters to plant roses around the spire! Keep in mind: your character may be wounded in this PQ. Blighted and unblighted welcome. As many spots open as needed. If you're unblighted, gather by Amalia. If you're blighted, gather out of sight and bide your time ;D

DEIMOS
He followed on silent wings and promises, a rose clutched in his talons, convictions laced in the set angles of jaws and beaks – finally some purpose with potential for success. If Vi was involved (unfortunately for Deimos, he lacked a foundational lore attached with feathers and plumage), wasn’t there a chance, an opportunity, to conquer the strands, to beat away the pestilence? For Kiada? For Ronin? For all the others who’d been struck and beaten? It was ignorance, perhaps, immersed in vows, endurance, and perseverance, too emboldened now to fling himself into cinders and ash, to fall on his knees and splinter, fracture, and fissure apart. They had ruminations, they had some clarities, they had potential to fix some of this.

The dawn pressed its winter chill into his soul and he felt enlightened, a ghost on the fringes, spiraling his way from the top of the Spire, before plunging into a dive, and coming to a stop beside Amalia’s otter form. The rose and its thorns remained in his grasp, waiting for further directions – the depths of his talons itching for digging or tearing, narrowed eyes searching, a pulse, a beat, of treachery slinking along foreboding, ominous fathoms.

Or maybe it was just the notion of the Spire itself, broken and disheveled from their prior tirades, but always certain of leaving a mark upon one’s soul.

REMI
i've been sleepwalking and wandering all night
He comes cloaked in that which is the most powerful, if only to compensate for how very weak he feels. Without Ronin, Remi rarely sleeps. Without Aoife to feed, Remi forgets to feed himself. He'll live for Aoife of course. The alchemist won't simply give up on life, but if he cannot solve what is killing his husband, living is more than can be asked of him. For a time anyways.

Of course those around him will feel the weariness, the strain, the emptiness. The levity of his spirit is gone, replaced by a wasteland of continual dead-ends and non-answers. But of course Remi is here. He knows little of how the roses are supposed to work, but he will risk the thorns and the bittersweet blade of hope, if only to try.

For Ronin, he will always try.

White on white.

In Flowerbirth, Longheat, and Leafchange he stood out like a freshly broken bone among the greens and browns and reds around him. He had to hunt by speed and guile, for his platinum pelage gave him away with every breath. But the world had turned and the seasons with it, and now at last his time had come 'round again. Deepfrost had arrived, with its smothering blanket of white pressing the life from the world. It was the season of dying. The season for hunters.

The season for ghosts.

The fox slunk on silent paws, even his little black nose hidden in snow as he moved low and trackless across the fresh crust, the tiniest indentations of his delicate paws wiped away by his trailing bushy tail. The scent that had brought him out from the shadow of the Spire was not one of food, but one of fury; the same scent that had pervaded the wretched, hateful garden in the Greatwood, spurring him to tear apart one of the uncanny roses.

Now the scent had come even here, a travesty, a mockery.

A challenge.

The scents of the roses mingled with others no less beloved despised, cherished enraging in their familiarity. How dare they trespass, bringing the filthy weeds into his domain? He crouched motionless behind a snowbank, flat-eared head just barely peeking over far enough to see as he watched them assemble, blue black eyes flat as obsidian chips, reflecting only rage as lips peeled back from black-stained teeth in a silent snarl.

shed every skin that doesn't fit even if they call you cold-blooded
unhinge your jaw —
She follows them, a swift bird on pale wings, coated in black tarry ink and a small amount of blood – hiding beneath the boughs of trees. She saw the blood red roses from a distance, saw Deimos, Amalia, and Remi approach with them. And yet, the Harpy feels nothing but the never ended vibrance of rage brimming beneath the surface of her skins. Her beak clenches, scarlet eyes narrow as she hides within the treetops.

Destroy. Destroy. Destroy.

It’s all she can think, but she waits her time. She cannot take it alone, she cannot fight it by herself. She has not won the war with her body, but her mind works the same. Calculating, cool, schematic. And she waits, ivory, ebony, scarlet feathers hidden beneath the dark remaining foliage and snow. And she waits.

AMALIA
meet me where the falling stars live
The three who come are those invited, and she greets them each with a pulse of appreciation, her hope and happiness at the prospect of solution briefly enough to overwhelm the crushing fear of failure. Deimos' eagle form remains breathtaking to her, resplendent and gorgeous in feathers of gold, and Remi's Manticore is a massive thing, delicately holding it's blood red rose.

Next to them the otter feels small, but she knows her nimble claws are suited to the work ahead, that she can easily and gently maneuver roses into place. Together they will make a difference. Together they will do Vi's work.

She does not see the others who watch, their blue eyes black with illness.

Let's find places that are sheltered, maybe ten feet apart? Lifting her plant, Amalia finds her own position beside a long since fallen stone, leaning down and beginning to dig a hole in which to plant her rose.

REMI
i've been sleepwalking and wandering all night
The alchemist should have commended his fellow hybrid—should have even noticed—but he does not. He hasn't slept, hasn't eaten. Hasn't breathed properly since...flashes of blue eyes smeared with black. Of words of malice and a body far too cold spark horrifically behind his eyes. It is all the manticore can do to retain his shape.

With a wayward pulse of vague agreement, the manticore moves towards the crater where the Spire Demon exploded and Ronin died. Dropping himself into it easily, the large beast begins to churn up the earth with formidable paws.

Remi starts to plant his rose in the crater left by the Spire Demon explosion!

DEIMOS
Had there been more time, more breathing space, more room, more than just rushing and panic, he and Remi might’ve shared the stoic appreciation of hybrid mentalities, the blend of magic and beast – but there wasn’t. It could come later, after everything, when they had spare instances and seconds, when every moment wasn’t critical or collateral damage.

Amalia’s appreciation and Remi’s silence are intriguing things – he goes for more of the latter, a pattern even when his notions could be shared across inaudible bonds, a solemn nod, a bout of solemn entreaties, the simplest, merest gust of composure and calm sent to the baker/otter. Then he applied to following her direction, grabbing hold of the rose in his talons, hastening towards some portion of the damned hellhole that was somewhat shielded.

He hated every aspect of this place – nothing good coming of it, demonstrations of demolition and disaster, near deaths, actual deaths, plagues upon houses and wards. It was odd, to think the gilded flowers could take root here, in the midst of so much corruption and condemnation (shouldn’t he have felt at home, instead of an adversarial stance?).

His talons dug into the snow, sifting it away, digging into the soil by the entrance to the basement, beneath ruined overhangs and beside fallen columns, intending to tuck it under the pillars, out of sight, out of mind, permitted to grow and bloom further without hindrance.

He was smaller than they were, almost pathetically so with their great golden wings and talons like knives. Even the otter was not so much smaller than him, not so easy a prey amid the fresh-fallen snow. A wiser beast would have slunk away, knowing itself outmatched and seeking to strike instead another day when they were scattered, alone, vulnerable to his attack.

Ah, but the aroma that wafted from those roses they all clutched so dearly was sickening in its sweetness, a cloying mockery of the winter peace around them, futile red flags pitifully waving against death's season and the sweet embrace of oblivion that the snows offered. Was he not a servant of death in all its forms? The part of him that sought to please the darkness at the end of life could not simply walk away from this heresy, this travesty against the balance of the world.

Even in the depths of his madness he wasn't fool enough to attack the monstrous winged lion, and he recognized nothing of the eagle. The otter though... the otter drew him with a scent like starlight and the memory of warmth.

It burned like acid in his chest, a rage building even greater than that which drove him day and night, and he bunched his muscles beneath his snow-white fur, slinking on silent paws around the snowbank, behind the fallen stones, stalking, hunting this treasured wretched little creature who made him feel such agonizing pain beneath his ribs. The only way to stop the pain was with blood and more blood, splashed red across the snow in Deepfrost's true garden, not this abomination they made play at.

Cunning little monster, dainty pawed and black-mawed, the fox made sure to creep up on the otter, keeping her between him and the others before he pounced, soundless and swift from behind the fallen stone, intent on closing tar-stained jaws around her and ending her rose-planting days for good.

shed every skin that doesn't fit even if they call you cold-blooded
unhinge your jaw —
The darkness hums to her, screaming and writhing within her that the roses are meant to be destroyed, to burn in smoke of a flame she no longer possesses. So she must adapt, lingering in the trees, hidden by boughs of wintery snow and remaining foliage. At least she has the dark part of her feathers that run down the edges of her beak, concealing the blackness from her eyes – but it does nothing to stop the dripping liquid from the end of her beak, the way it coats her feathers, mind, heart, soul.

She does not recognize the eagle, but she knows the otter, and something seems oddly familiar about the wings that sprout on the manticore. And so she calculates, an aerial battle between eagle and vulture? To try and swoop down and fling the otter away from her plant? Or to swipe the rose out from the Manticore’s paws? She makes a plan, and begins to spread her wings right when a fox darts out of the shadows – aimed directly at the otter.

There’s a fit of anger within her, and she wants to cry out at the fox, to flight and flay, before she realizes he is interrupting the planting. And she takes to the air, full of malice and frustration, circling once in the high skies before diving hard and fast toward the manticore, sharp talons outstretched to grab the rose to carry it away and destroy it, destroy the evidence of a pitiful attempt at fixing it. A guttural call leaves her beak, a small amount of black ink flying from it as she does it, swooping in close and fast.

AMALIA
meet me where the falling stars live
In light the trio works to plant their roses, each one finding a suitable place: the crater where once a demon expired, the entrance to an ill-fated abyss, a sheltered shadow in the shade of the tower. Together they work on their given assignments, readying holes for their roses to bloom. Though the ground is frozen, tainted by death, the trio is easily able to break through it- though not without being seen.

The attack is sudden and two pronged, one by land and one by air. The harpy swoops down with feral fury, her claws outstretched as she dives toward her prey, a larger and far more deadly foe. Perhaps it is the scream she utters, perhaps the blight simply muddles her thoughts: whatever it is, she misses Remi by a mile, the manticore escaping without a scratch.

The otter, too, is fortunate, though her brush with danger is a closer thing. The fox is a white wraith on the snow, almost invisible but for the black saliva that drips from his teeth like so much tar. From the corner of her eye Amalia spots him, and it is only by luck she is able to escape, using her smaller size and mobility to dodge out of her corrupt friend's way.

Clutching the rose against her chest, Amalia leaps to a nearby snow bank, scarcely avoiding Jigano's claws. Jigano! she cries, panic in her dark eyes, leaping away before circling back to where her hole is dug. Plant your roses! she calls to her friends, frantically trying to place the roots before another onslaught occurs. Don't let them stop us- we have to do it for them!

DEIMOS
They weren’t alone.

It was a spine-chilling thing coiling its way down the back of his avian neck, and he turned to regard movement and motions that any other time, might not have been so bestial, so barbaric, so twisted. Jigano, ivory and vulpine, had long since lost his luster in the rage of the blight’s circumstances, advancing upon Amalia before anyone would’ve had a chance to block or defend – Kiada doing the same, Harpy intervals raging upon Remi, harsh and unrelenting, even as she missed. Kiada, he bellowed through the newfound connections, pondering if it would even reach her. Stop! It was a command, it was a demand, but they were long since passed a time where he’d been king and monarch and sovereign. If it even mattered. If all of this was for naught again, and their thresholds were fighting a losing battle.

He could hear Amalia’s commands, don’t let them stop us ringing through his mind, but clarity, missions, weren’t going to override protection of those he cherished. Quickly, swiftly, he maneuvered pieces of rock and rubble to block the rose from sight while it remained slightly rooted, hoping the makeshift fortification would work for the moment, aiming to instill himself as a damned blackguard.

He turned rapidly, wings outstretched, and took to the air briefly, enough to ascend, to gain greater clarity on the expanse as Amalia missed Jigano’s leap. Then he plummeted, divebombing, intending to stretch out his talons and snag at the fox, either trying to lift him into the air, scattering him away from the sanction, or distract him long enough for Amalia to be successful in her planting. A deterrent, placing himself directly in the fray – bestial and barbaric, giving naught but vehemence and acrimony. He had no doubt Remi’s bulk would take of everything on his part – he could likely grab hold of the Harpy and they’d be safe for singular seconds.

REMI
i've been sleepwalking and wandering all night
Remi knows there is a soul inside of the harpy as it screeches his way. He knows the name of the woman in which the soul resides. He knows too, that it is merely the blight causing this reckless madness. Most unsettling of all, is that he knows all of this, and does not care. If madness is their excuse, then grief is his.

As the harpy rushes towards him, the manticore turns to revel in her attack. Rearing up on his hindlegs and pawing wildly at the sky as the vulture swoops down, Remi roars loudly as the flying creature darts away. He won't leave the rose nor the place of Ronin's first death, but his eyes invite the interloper back for another pass. Is that all you have? He taunts, his mental voice rough and uncharacteristically dark sounding.
