Teleporting into a brand new world as the member of a different species demands a search for knowledge, and it was a search Renaud had been desperately pursuing since his arrival on Caido.  Naturally, it had disadvantages - one being that it had proven less than simple to find another Ascended who could explain to him what the hell being such a creature really meant.  He had learned of a pantheon of gods and that some favored his kind more than others.  He had learned that there was "The Voice", one of these "new gods" that apparently favored the Ascended as well.  He also had no idea how reliable any of this information was, as it had been given to him by men with only an outside understanding of his condition.

So, when he learned of the existence of something like the Atheneum, a partially collapsed building holding tomes upon tomes of knowledge, he was compelled to travel there with incredible haste.  He came at night - because why wouldn't he? - and set about looking through the rows of books for something that might be useful to him.  As he was alone, and as there seemed to be little to no organization about the place, he was mostly pulling out every book that appeared interesting, flipping through it, and then either putting it back in its place or tucking it under his arm.  After some time of searching, he had about three that looked interesting.

Eventually he noticed a door, not overly interesting but also not covered in rubble, which struck his interest.  It was as if something was calling to him through the wood grains, urging his curiosity.  He elected to explore whatever was behind that door while he was at the Atheneum, but decided it was best to at least flip through the books he head gathered before he took what could possibly be a dangerous journey deeper into the building.

So, in pursuit of that decision, he found a place to sit on a roughly square chunk of rubble.  He placed two books to his right, and opened the third in his lap.  It appeared to be a history of Caido, or at least a partial one.  He flipped through the pages, skimming some chapters and examining the organization of the tome as a whole.

When he was finished determining the usefulness of one book, he closed it, set it aside, and picked up another.  He had no interest to fully read the books then and there, of course - he only needed to assure that they were each worth being carried all the way back to Loren's manor.

Moonlight shined through the opening of the Atheneum where the building had been partially destroyed by forces Renaud could only guess at - either time, weather, or something more supernatural.  This moonlight seemed to dance against him, either illuminating half of his face or none at all depending on how he shifted around on his little rubble seat.

He remained there, flipping through his books, assuming that nothing more pressing would come up that evening.

One of the cool things about Ascending is that a.) you don’t need a night light and b.) not many people are around to bother you when you visit the library after hours. In fact, it’s almost always empty. All the time. Especially nowadays, with the ‘Loreseekers’ more or less MIA due to blight. Fine by her.

There as a very quiet rumor about a new Outlander Ascended, so when Wessex needed a night free of Blight and LongNight drama, she turned her spidey-senses on and went out to hunt for the new kid on the block.

Is she the best welcome-r? No. Is she the most important one? Yes. Better her than Sam – or even worse, one of the blighted. The Queen shakes her head at nothing in particular as she makes her way through the inhabited parts of the Hallowed Grounds, stopping every now and then to smell or feel or peer into the dark (and occasionally through windows – but it’s ok, no one sees her being a total creep). Eventually she comes to the inner part of the Sanctuary and that’s when the distant sound of something moving draws the Wraith’s attention. There’s nothing else on her agenda tonight, so Wessex decides to follow the sounds, knowing it could be one of three things: her target, a blighted person, or an animal. All of which she can handle at night.

“Hello? Wessex calls out as she boldly enters the library, giving whomever is there ample time to either hide or greet her back. She moves soundlessly, preternaturally, bare feet unbothered by the freezing cold floor. She wears a dark, full-length cloak for appearance’s sake only (some things are worth the appearance, and wandering around in the middle of winter with just her leather armor on turns out to be more disturbing than she thought), somewhat severe face made only more so by the stark light of the moon. The woman is no beauty, unless you’re drawn to the kind who look like they might be able to crush you. She is, however, indisputably strong, and holds herself like she knows it.

Renaud had circled back around to his first book when Wessex entered, unseen and unheard by the young man.  When she called out her greeting, he was on his feet in an instant, knocking his book to the floor.  It was fast. In fact, it was faster than he had ever moved in his life.  He chalked his newfound speed up to his status as an Ascended, though he had not yet had opportunity to fully explore this new ability.  In fact, he didn't actually know for sure that his speed was increased at night.

The woman stood across the room from Renaud, resolute like a statute.  He was about to respond to her call, but the greeting caught in his throat when he noticed this woman's attire.  She wore what seemed to be leather armor and a long robe.  She looked like a fighter, and left Renaud feeling somewhat silly in his damaged uniform breeches.  The slash on the outer left thigh had yet to be repaired, though the skin underneath was healed.  At least the pants had been cleaned, right?

Black boots extended up to just below his knee.  His linen shirt caught the breeze, flowing somewhat romantically around his torso.  He certainly looked like a dashing young man of his time, which was to say he looked humorously out of place and unprepared for the world around him.

When Renaud noticed that she wasn't wearing footwear, a bell rang in his mind.  There was really only one good reason a person would be traipsing around at night without footwear, assuming he wasn't looking at a completely insane person.

"You're one of them, are you not?" He called across the room to her, forgetting a greeting in his excitement and anxiety.  "Er ... one of us, I mean.  An uh - An Ascended, correct?"  He tilted his head slightly.

"I am Renaud Cartier.  I'm ... new.  To Caido, I mean."  His knees remained slightly bent, ready to respond to an provocation or perhaps attack from this stranger.  He didn't want to assume this woman had his best interests in mind. His hands remained at about his midsection, not quite so hostile as having his guard completely up but also not as passive as to have them down by his side.

All Outlanders look a bit out of place when the land in Caido – some more than others. He, at least, looks somewhat prepared for Deepfrost compared to the last man she’d encountered. What was his name again? It was funny. Long… ‘son of…’ eh, it’s not important right now, she’ll probably remember it eventually.

What is important is that she doesn’t judge him (immediately) on his appearance. It doesn’t even cross her mind. He is young, though. That much is obvious. Beautiful and young, and oh, Edy would have fucking loved him. But again, also not important. He’s alert and seems quick on his feet (yes, she heard the scramble, the books falling to the ground), and most importantly, observant. “Either you’ve been reading a lot or someone ‘s told you about us,” she says in response, confirming his question in a roundabout way.

The Wraith pads silently towards him, a more welcoming expression on her face (describing it as ‘smiling’ would be going too far) and ease in her stride. There’s no threat there. “Ascended. Yes. Because we’ve risen above many mortal problems.” They have their own ah, complications, but illness and physical aches and pains will never again plague his body. He will remain forever youthful, forever chiseled and stupidly pretty, able to use his appearance to his advantage for as long as he draws needless breath. Assuming that the boy doesn’t retreat, Wessex offers a firm handshake when she gets within hand-shaking distance.

“I’m Wessex Theskyra. Queen of Caido. Welcome.”

If nothing else, perhaps that will put his mind at ease.
