Well this going to be fun for everyone.

Wondering which one of them was dumb enough (har har) to go piss off the Fae, Wessex sighs and suits up for the trek into the Greatwood. There are so many other things she could be doing tonight, most of which are more pleasant than this task. Pausing a moment to reconsider - she could send someone else - the Wraith eventually decides against it. It’s time the little people knew their most loathed acquaintance was Queen. Not that they would care. But they should know.

A steel sword at her hilt, the Ascended stands alone at the edge of the ravaged forest at nightfall, keenly aware of her promise to not enter the Woods again. Her kind aren’t wanted there. Heard it loud and clear. So rather than enter without permission, she raises her voice and gazes into the darkness, where the bare trees rub against each other, where she knows they’re watching. They’re always watching.

“I’m Queen Theskyra and I’m asking permission to enter the Greatwood so I can collect the idiot who trespassed.”

Delah too could send someone else, but like the queen she opts to go herself.

As soon as Wessex steps foot into the Greatwood whispers of her presence reach the war chief's ears. She is on her feet in a flash, boots molding into paws as she makes her way silent through the thicket and underbrush. For a time she prowls, watching and thinking. She has encountered the Ascended on only the rarest of occasions and while she knows their senses are heightened, she cannot know just by how much. It is very likely that even cloaked in the skin of a jaguar that the human-queen knows she is there.

Shifting pelts, the diminutive queen eyes her Hollowed Grounds counterpart with an inscrutable moss gaze. "When Ronin Taliesin visited me he agreed we should keep the ascended from the woods. How interesting that at the time he failed to mention you and your promotion." Delah mused in a voice like steel against stone.

“He is only a Man,” Wessex says with a shrug, knowing that he is actually quite more than that. Or less than that now. It’s hard to tell which. But here they are, two women, and it's a poor attempt at levity.

“And yet I’ve kept our end of the bargain, haven’t I?” Implying, of course, that she is the one who keeps the Ascended in check. It’s not entirely true, but it’s nice to project that kind of image. And here she is, asking before crossing the border. “Ah, except to plant Vi’s roses. I did cross the border for that, which I apologize.” She spreads her hands in a shrug and bows her head a tad. Otherwise, she fixes Delah with an expectant gaze. Either let her in or send her back. She doesn’t have time to dilly dally over who ruled what first.

Except that Wessex would like to point out, for the record, that she is technically the senior monarch. A few days is a few days and no one can tell her otherwise. Ah fuck it, she'll say it. "Although technically, I promoted him."

Ahh so it is to be a battle of the politically correct is it? Passive agressive, with emphasis on the pASSive? Oh alright.

"So am I to surmise that you send your lessers to great the rival kingdoms? Or..?" Or the promotion comment is entirely superfluous. "Not that it matters really. You all seem to either die or abandon your people so quickly that it is hard to keep track. There is a type of spore here that acts very much the same way; it shines brightly for but a day or so before floating off to pollinate elsewhere. Your fellow King said I should give him a season and should he survive it, he might be worthy of remembering. How long do you have?"

There’s nothing left to do but laugh, so Wessex does, interjecting a light chuckle as she looks up at the Deepfrost-grey sky. “Surmise whichever will offend you least..." She trails off. There’s no point in answering the mostly hypothetical question (I mean really, abomination or less monarch?) She isn’t bothered until the Fae Chief all but says she’s going to abandon her people, challenging her with a quip about Ronin and some fucking bit of mold.

But you know what the cool thing about being a Queen is? She doesn’t have to justify herself unless she wants to. Or feels the need to. The Wraith feels neither, as it is obvious that the War Chief knows jack shit about her.

There’s nothing but a build up of determination in Wessex’s spine that drives her to prove everyone wrong. Including Delah. Wessex smiles disarmingly and refuses to answer the question, instead gesturing gracefully towards the woods (not so far away, but still out of reach). “So is that a yes to permission to enter the Greatwood or would you like to escort my person here?”

"Your kind are not welcome in the woods, not with the sickness you have brought. I will bring him to you. I trust that you will ensure that your people respect the guidelines that we have agreed upon." Delah says tersely, for it was not so long ago that it was Wessex being drudged out of the pit.

Far more swiftly than the distance would seem to allow, Loren was brought. His hands were bound in vines and he was moved at spearpoint until he reached the divide between Greatwood and Outskirts.

LOREN
Loren didn’t resist as the Fae brought him out of the pit and marched him incredibly quickly out of their lands. He had a hollowed out, empty expression in his eyes and his face was blank, almost completely devoid of emotions. The stay in the pit had been harrowing: not because of the conditions, but because of the emotional turmoil he’d been through with Remi. Now, all Loren wanted to do was go home and shut out the world.

When he arrived and saw Wessex, he roused slightly. Turning to the Fae who was clearly in charge, he inclined his head to both her and the queen of the Hollowed Grounds, not trusting them to let him bow and not really having the energy to do so. ”I apologize to you both for my transgressions.” He knew better than to make any promises or assurances that he wouldn’t do it again.

Then even that last sign of life left him and he stood there, waiting for the tongue-lashing and further punishments. That, too, he would endure. Then he’d finally be alone.

Loneliness was all that was waiting for him and all that he deserved.

Oh, damn, is the leadership banter time over? What a pity, Wessex would say, can’t wait for next time! She nods in agreement and manages to refrain from rolling her eyes, more than tired of this one-sided relationship. The Fae have all the power here, and she’s sick of playing the accommodating supplicant, as if it was their own fault the Hallowed Grounds is in a shitty state. There’s only so much a group of mortals can do in an isolated bubble. Ugh. Fuck the Fae and the fuck the Old Gods.

The Wraith is deep in her ugly thoughts when Loren’s dragged out of the trees. Her eyes go wide for a minute then narrow, nostrils flaring in a very strong emotion.

It makes her far more angry that it’s him than if, say, it had been Adam who had been caught. The other man is a drunken fool. Loren, however, is not. And he knows they need him. Like a protective parent, Wessex is more angry at the danger the Launceleyn put himself and the rest of the people in, than the actual fact that he went into the woods and disobeyed the Fae. She silently reaches for the chains of vine, then looks to Delah.

Are they done here? She has consequences to make up and a tongue-lashing to deliver, both of which she would prefer to do in private.

"Keep your apology." The warchief replies with a terse huff. "Just don't do it again." If he did, he'd be introduced to a far worse fate than sitting in the bottom of a pit for a few days.

Delah's eyes raked over the queen with quiet contempt as the forest around her seemed to bristle. With a nod, the vines around Loren were released. Though the war chief didn't know if the mage or the queen had more to say, Delah certainly didn't. Turning, the fae and her guards disappeared back into the woods, the path they walked quickly being hidden by the ever-moving forest.

LOREN
Loren certainly didn’t have anything further to say, unless he was asked. When the vines released him, he very carefully refrained from rubbing his sore wrists, or giving any sign of his discomfort. Instead, he simply stood there, head bowed, as he waited for the punishment from Wessex. He’d serve whatever time she thought appropriate, take whatever retribution she chose to dish out. It wasn’t like he wasn’t good at taking his licks in whatever form they came in. From the look on the woman's face, these would be particularly nasty ones.

But nothing could compare to the way he'd hurt those he loved.

The irony of this situation isn’t lost on Wessex, nor is the look of contempt that Delah seems to have a fathomless reserve of, all for the Grounders, but especially for Wessex. Wouldn’t the Ascended just love to get some iron on that woman’s skin and…

She waits until the chief and her warriors disappear back into the greenery, before she slowly rounds on Loren and fixes him with a scathingly disappointed look. There are no words for him, not yet, not even as she makes a small gesture for him to follow and then begins to walk quickly back towards the Settlement. He’ll have to keep up in order to keep the conversation going. “I assume you’re unharmed?” she asks tersely, looking straight ahead. It isn’t in the Fae’s MO to hurt their captives, not physically at least. And to their credit, they didn’t even try to touch Wessex, for all they think her an abomination.

She’s been in the pit, she knows what it’s like. Solitary, yes - but far from torturous.

LOREN
The look Wessex sent Loren’s way was far from friendly, but also couldn’t compare to some of the glares he’d received over the years. Besides, she’d have to do a lot more than that to make him feel worse about himself than he already did. The queen set a quick pace, one that Loren had trouble keeping up with. Still, he obviously wasn’t going to complain, given the circumstances.

Her question, however, caught him off guard: he was expecting admonishments, not concern, even if said concern came out rather gruffly. ”I’m fine.” His voice was quiet, without any trace of any noticeable emotion. If she happened to glance back, all she’d see was that he carefully kept his gaze trained to the forest floor, not wanting to chance meeting her gaze.

Well she’s not trying to instill the fear of God in him, or beat him down, or try to manipulate him, so it makes sense that her look can’t compare to the rest of the shitty people in the Launceleyn man’s past. Wessex does not, however, glance back. If he’s fine then he’s fine, and he’s a big boy and can speak up if he isn’t. The fact that she even has to do this reconfirms the fact that they’re not friends. This is a working relationship - even if he’s pledged his loyalty to her.

It takes another couple of minutes, but the Queen eventually stops and turns to face Loren. She is all steel and ice, Deepfrost brought to life in cold, blue eyes and pale skin, with nothing of the warmth she’s been trying to cultivate. This is old Wessex. “You’re going to tell me two things: First, what happened? Second, what the fuck were you thinking?”

LOREN
Wessex came to a stop and Loren stumbled to a halt behind her. The questions were expected, as was the anger in her voice, so he kept his gaze lowered, his face expressionless, and his voice low and devoid of anything resembling emotion. She might have been cold, but he was frigid. ”I went to show them the Spark Bird. They denied me entrance and refused to let me demonstrate, but I decided to show them anyway, since I thought they deserved to see what we thought was the best defense against the monsters on the off chance they made it out to the Fae village.” That was the truth, and while it might not have been his wisest decision, he wouldn’t have changed it. Besides, further apologies or excuses wouldn’t get him anywhere. If Wessex decided to punish him further, so be it. He probably deserved it.
