You can hear it in the quiet (come). In the muffled steps as those about you try and be still, to make noise to disrupt the unsettling silence (come) and yet still to be respectful of the madness outside. But it calls. In the flickering (come) flames, in the shadow stretched long by (come) candlelight.

It
          (come)
calls.

An itch in your bones, the chill on your neck, an insistent beating with a rhythm (come) you can't tap with your foot, but one your heart has synced up to. It's confus(come)ing but undeniable.

It's outside.

And it wants you to

            come

Welcome to your LongNight drop! You've seen what happens when you go outside, so this drop is not without danger! The reward however is a mythical undead luxere with super special powers. Is the risk worth the reward! You decide!

If you join this drop, I ask that you don't join any other RE threads that occur during your absence for obvious timeline reasons <3

Reply within 24 hours.

The doors to the Guild had been opened, for grave, terrible reasons, and Peter had seen the trauma, felt a pang in his chest, then looked beyond. He was not a healer, not a nurturer, wasn't even close really to those involved, save Rex, and he could do nothing for her.

No, instead he looked beyond that, where dark shapes prowled along the circle of luxere, and stared, transfixed at the utter darkness. So unlike anything he'd ever experienced. It seemed to call to him. Or... not seemed to. It did call to him. Enough that he slipped out the doors, using the chaos to his advantage to stay unnoticed, a skill that was rusty but not lost to him. Rusty enough that Amalia noticed, not trying to stop him but coming along, passing a shield to him before shifting back into the glowing creature she'd been before.

Peter was glad for it, even if the light, from her and the fish surrounding her, felt like a target more than a safeguard. It was better than creeping through the shrouds of pitch towards the call.

There was only so long Amun was willing to stay in one place. However, he’d been a good little soldier, just like Wessex had asked; indeed, although he’d maybeeeeee fooled around a bit probably, but timelines he’d mostly been twiddling his thumbs. It had probably been the hardest thing he’d done, staying put like that. But for a while, at least, he’d found ways to amuse himself. Very quickly, though he’d run out of entertaining options—and people—and he found himself pacing, filled with a restless energy.

And then he heard the call. Halting, his head shot towards the front door of the temple (since the back door was no longer there again depending on ambiguous timelines). Although he was getting pretty sick of all these voices in his head, the Ascended certainly liked to come. So, he felt a note on that table with all the special magical items in the middle of the room to tell someone that he'd gone out and  to lock the door, which surely someone would see.

Then, he waited for the front door to be unguarded before he slipped out, following the sound of the call. Although he probably should’ve learned the folly of listening to these sorts of crazy person voices in his head, he found his feet carrying him out into the darkness. Hopefully, as one person, he could avoid the monsters long enough to figure out what the fuck was going on. Plus, as an Ascended, navigating the darkness was no problem. So he let his feet carry him where the call led.

When everything and everyone
Becomes my enemy
The quiet of Longnight bothered Jiao. Quiet made it easier to be bored, made her feel anxious to move in case she broke it, for somehow it felt important that things stay silent. Maybe it was because now that they had broken the barrier, she knew there were monsters somewhere out there. She found herself sat on her bed listening to the air outside very carefully, waiting for a warning of some kind.

When instead she heard a soft command, come, she jumped. After her initial shock she squinted and listened again, trying to be sure she'd heard it in the first place. Come.

Was this a trick? She was unused to the sort of deception Longnight monsters liked to play with and did not know if this was the sort of thing to be expected. Something made her want to go to it, even with the chance of it being her death. Perhaps her recent discussion with Safrin and rekindling of faith.

She left her home, taking a shawl to wrap around her body and a large pair of sharp scissors from a basket by her door, usually used for cutting spools of fabric. At least if it was a monster, she'd have a chance to fight back. Clutching them close, she flew out of Sidhe, through the woods.

Come.

Luckily, the voice did not lead her too far into the Hollowed Grounds, where she was convinced absolute anarchy and monster-related horror had to be occuring. The Outskirts looked empty, barren for the time being and she pulled the shawl tighter around herself, wondering if she had come for nothing.

Safrin's shield
Except that Peter is not alone. Indeed, his shadow is large and luminous, the qilin still a beacon despite her lack of fire as the dreamfish and Jyoti swim alongside, into the night beside the man. When the call came she hesitated only a moment, wondering if this was not some trick- but Peter's determination to leave the guild was enough to convince her to come and protect him, giving him her shield before changing her form.

When they (and whoever else from MHG) reach the source of the call at last Amalia is rather unpleasantly surprised to see the gathered crowd. Amun, especially, is new to this world, someone she likes despite his nature; and Jiao is a Fae, perhaps unfamiliar with the unflinching terror that marks this week. Lowering her large ears unhappily, Amalia calls out softly to the assembled, wishing any of them were attuned and reluctant to give up the qilin form. At least Peter should know who she is, and perhaps Amun will recognize her necklace, unlikely though that may be.

Stepping among them, the Shield is alert and ready, prepared to jump in front of danger that may present itself, wishing she had her staff in hand but glad that it is keeping Kiada safe. Hopefully the fish will be enough to keep the night at bay.

Hopefully.

RONIN
Ronin was dreaming. He had to be, because he would never be so foolish as to go out into the long, dark night. Perhaps trauma and sleep deprivation had led him outside in a fugue state, or maybe he really was sleepwalking after nodding off in front of the fire. Whatever the reason, the creature’s call saw him answer, and he trudged through the snow with his collar turned up and Emmett’s axe slung over his shoulder.

Starlight pulsed from him in gentle waves, set aglow by his worries and his confusion, and a few feet back his astral projection walked in his footsteps. Come, it had said. And he was here.

Ronin arrives bathed in starlight, armed with Emmett’s axe and with an astral projection following in his wake.

Like hell she’s going to let Amun (who couldn’t tough it out at the Mathair and probably doesn’t know about his invisibility chip) go outside. Alone. Fuck whatever calls, he’ll be ripped to shreds. Worse than Bastien, probably. And since they’re already potentially perilously low on Ascended, she can’t afford to let that happen. Snarling to herself, seething even, the Queen slips out after her flunkie with a simmering sort of murder in her eyes.

The Wraith quietly follows Amun to the gathering, surprised to see Ronin, Amalia, a fae, and Peter already there. On-edge and none too pleased, Wessex waits a minute to see what’s going to happen, because if there’s anything she’s learned over the year, its that when two or more of Caido’s people gather together over a mystical call, shit happens.

----------------------

In addition to her usual array of knives-in-boots and such, she’s got a coil of rope with her - why? In case she literally needs to tie Amun up and haul him back.

The humans aren't the only ones who hear the call. The monsters do as well, though they are far less interested in what it is, than what it will bring. They wait until they are just far enough away that their cries of help will be useless, before attacking.

As Peter makes his way with Amalia's lovely (and useless) shield, they attack. With teeth that bite and gnaw at him, nipping at his heels and against the back of his neck, they seem to spur him onwards, laughing all the while.

And then there's Amun. Always so ready to show himself off; perhaps that is why he is swarmed. Though he'll not feel the pain, teeth claw at his arms and legs, ascended fluid leaking freely as bones are revealed from the torn muscle. They burrow into his hair, grating their teeth against his skull in an unrelenting maelstrom of cackling mouths.

Next comes the winged Jiao, and immediately the monsters go for her wings. Claws tear at the thin membrane of them, seemingly furious at their beautiful delicacy.

Amalia and Ronin move unimpeded, their pair of dreamfish swimming merrily behind casting a warm starlit glow.

Finally, there's Wessex. They slink in her wake, wary because of what she is and what she can do, but virile and furious nonetheless. Not all are as inquisitive as those she has met before. Some merely want blood, or in this case, fluid. For the Queen, they burrow into her ears, flailing and scratching at what they can, pulling hair and eyelashes.

When finally the pull subsides, you find yourselves in an area that seems impervious to your light. It is intentionally dark here, but the darkness isn't static. It moves like water; thick and oppressive around you, your meager tools of light casting hardly more than a weak sphere. The ascended can see, yes, but there is nothing to see here save for the falling snow.

Until of course, there is.

From the bowels of the pitch comes a creature that can't be real. It is comprised entirely of bones, and yet even without muscles or organs, something about it is uncannily expressive. Back eye-sockets regard each of you as it halts, darkness emanating from its antlers.

"Death or life. Which is more important." It asks in a hollow voice.

One day (or night, or LongNight, or whatever the fuck time even was in this fucking shithole of a world) Amun would learn not to listen to the voices in his head. It inevitably ended with him getting attacked by some fucking monster or another. Unfortunately, that day was not today; he was beset on all sides by teeth. While he wasn’t hurting, he could feel the flesh stripped from him and the fluid draining rapidly. Plus, there was that fucking cackling. And that was before they got to the dark area, where yet another monstrosity of a creature emerged and a creepy voice spoke to them.

Well, that one was easy to answer. Life. He definitely chose life, or whatever it was the Ascended had. Continued existence. Sentience. Panicking, he turned without much conscious thought beyond the need to get behind once more. His body and systems failing, he did his best to try and stumble and drag himself back to safety. Given that the Temple was locked up tight, he raced (not really, but he did his best) to the Guild, hoping they’d be more welcoming or dumber.

Amun does his best to escape to the Guild.

Safrin's shield
Though Wessex and Ronin are welcome arrivals for their respective strength and skill in battle, the arrivals of the guildmaster and the Ascended cause the qilin to turn an ear back uneasily. With Wessex here, who is guarding the Temple? And with Ronin - and a second dreamfish - out in the dark, and Jigano with Kiada, it leaves only Remi and Deimos to guard the guild and all who rest within.

For a moment she considers retreating back, but then the darkness strikes. Joyti croons her strong displeasure as the oppressive abyss yawns around them, desperately trying to cast enough starlight for the others to see by. Amalia's large ears fall back further as she shuffles in the dark, looking for figures and seeing Peter nearby, already slightly wounded. Moving her large body close to the Abandoned, the qilin stays vigilant as the darkness shifts and a creature appears within.

It is... it is not alive, and yet it is, by some miracle of Vi and Mort. Bones knitted together without sinew and eyes like empty, yawning chasms mark a luxere unlike any other Amalia has seen. She regards it carefully, not striking, not relaxing, as its question echoes through the dark. Life or death? The qilin exhales, shaking her large head. Her answer may not be what was asked, but it is the thing she has been raised to believe, the thing that Vi once told her. Living the life that Vi has given well enough to be worthy of Mort... that is most important.

She can feel something invading her, pushing into orifices that should never be filled, plucking off pieces that can be regrown. There's no pain, but she cannot help but swat at the monsters, baring her fangs momentarily. While Wessex held no delusion that she would be attacked, part of her, oh part of her wants to rest on the laurels of being the REBORN. and so she tries, hissing to them, “You know what I am. I have the secrets to being reborn..." before moving towards Ronin. In his ear, she whispers "Can you move towards Amalia? Maybe the light from the two fish can work for more people if you're close together? Or at least try to get the other two in." (if they decide to stay) Peter doesn't take up much room. As for herself... well, she might be relatively ok if things start to go south, thanks to her Lady.

She tries to stick to Ronin's side like glue - maybe uncomfortably close, but fuck it, now is not the time for feeling weird about personal space.

The question, however, still goes unanswered. For it is in death that she has become who she is, but if is in life that she is able to do the most good. Yet she would not have chosen to 'die' without having lived the life she did. Is it a test? Maybe. Or a way to keep them here so the monsters can chip away at them.

“Neither. Life and Death made me who I am,” the Queen answers, rather diplomatically if she does say so herself.

Though he can’t see anything but shadows around him, Peter can feel the monsters at their heels, his heels. He ducks his head down, feet moving quicker, and bringing him closer to Amalia, then looks around, taking stock of the others who answered the calls, the damage they were taking. He recognizes most of them, a strange feeling for him, and tries to ignore the strange feeling of guilt at seeing them hurt.

The darkness that wraps around them does not scare him, but it does drive him even closer to Amalia, his hand on her shoulder. So he doesn’t lose her, if things get worse. Which they do.

Just not how he expects.

The creature (is it a creature? Can a thing without meat be called a creature?) is entrancing, in a way he can’t explain. It can’t be, it shouldn’t be, and yet he wants to touch it, just to stop his mind from trying to rationalize it. It’s even worse when it speaks, but he still steps forward, eyes wide. And the question barely requires any thought at all, a lifetime of loss making the choice easy.

”Life.” He answers into the wind, not offering any extra explanation, anything that hasn’t been asked.

RONIN
In his dream, his friends appeared. So too did another small creature, and Ronin’s breath caught at the sight of the dreamfish swirling in his wake. His voice caught on the greeting he tried to give it, remembering his last journey with such a creature; confused and bloody and with a squalling newborn. But now was not then, and he glanced up as Wessex ’s voice echoed in his ear.

Glancing at Amalia, he nodded to the Ascended Queen and stepped through the snow until he was at the baker’s side, the area around them set aglow by starlight. But then something appeared through the impenetrable darkness, something that made his bones shiver. The former captain swallowed hard, listening to the answers given to the question it asked, watching as some of those gathered departed back into the night—

Wait—

It’s not safe—

But they were already gone.

It was Wessex whose answer he could relate to the most, also having stood on both sides of the equation. ”Life begets death begets life,” he said. ”Both have much to teach you. Both are equally important.”
