SWORD
we watched the night under moonlight mixed in ocean air
the salty breeze tickled our necks
and we counted galaxies forgetting boundaries,
imagined reaching for them,
like for each other
Something in his heart felt heavy and he hated it, detested the notions, the spiraling accord, the reach for irritation spiking a nettle, a thorn, a barb in the back of his mind. It furrowed its way through his lungs and out his flesh, rippling, undulating formations as he meandered around his house, familiar and distinct, not burning, not yielding, but there. Perhaps the most exasperation notion surrounding the ruminations and speculations was that he should’ve been content in their shared space, in Shield and Sword paradigms and particulars, but LongNight’s spell had cast a graver conjecture on his movements and motions, and he threaded with the same restless vestiges. As if he were caged. As if he were locked. As if he wasn’t as free, as liberated, as he once believed.

So in the quiet, because he kept stoking silence, along morning treads and contorted fervency, the monolith’s surge of contemplation was replaced with a unleashed connection with the baker, going outside in case she wanted to join, pressing and weaving his way out into the sun, instead of the night.

The beast made an immediate turn towards his training fields in the back, a sense of comfort in their forged existence, where he could practice, where he could ravage and savage, where he could imagine adversaries and enemies beyond plumes of fire and grave, maniacal upheaval, or dead, demolished friends, remains left to sudden pyres. He stretched his fingers, thought about grabbing a weapon from nearby, but then his footfalls went heavier, sunken into the ground. Lifting his foot, the mud wrapped around his shoe, causing the slightest tilt to his head in avid curiosity; instantly distracted from whatever formidable, brewing, brooding contortion lacquered and enameled to his skull.

There's a restlessness that ways follows Longnight, a heaviness in the sunlit air for the first few days to come. Counting losses, assessing damage- it is always the same year after year, the victory of survival tainted black by shadows of the lost.

It does not surprise her that Deimos feels this. She is just rising as he slips outside, and it is a few quiet minutes before she follows, a cup of tea for herself in one hand, another for him held close beside. Her footfalls are soft as she steps out of the backdoor, leopard-padded feet absorbing some of the lingering cold, though the hair on her bare legs rises as she settles onto the step. She is wearing nothing beyond one of his woolen shirts and a pair of shorts, her long hair braided messily down her back. As she clutches the mug her toes curl slightly, pleasure from the heat pulsing through her body.

She is content, at first, to watch in silence, offering her presence as solace or sanctuary, finding comfort in the unspoken things. But then he seems to get stuck in a mud puddle of all things, and Amalia cannot help it: resting her elbows upon her knees, the Shield leans forward with amused smile. "Having some trouble there, Deimos?" she wonders, voice lightly teasing in the cool morning air.

He should’ve been used to looking like the fool, for all his blown tactics, strategies, and efforts. This one, however, was silly in its design – no one dying, no one screeching, no one hollering, no one beseeching one another in some deadly conflagration, no monsters clawing into the midst. Instead, it was mud slithering its way down his boot, shaking his head, intending to merely continue on, when the teasing comment strolled through the air.

He raised his brows, turning back towards the Shield, the sense of ease in her presence, comfort, acceptance, tolerance, capable of embodying idiotic forms in her platitude, obvious in the distinction of mischief instantly pulsing through his wake. Appearing somewhat innocent, which had probably never actually occurred a single day in his life, his hands swiped at the mud contorting its way up his leg, grabbing hold of it in his palm, piercing eyes sliding back to her. “Not at all,” he snickered and smirked, shrugging, extending the stoking of amusement through their accord and connection. She likely could presume what was coming next, volleys and instigation, a stoking, provoking facet, and he followed along the plan with ridiculous ease – arm quickly maneuvered back, then extended forward, launching a series of mud droplets to cascade out of their memorable form, intending to descend somewhere in Amalia’s midst.

She does have a guess as to what will come next, but the knowledge comes too late to save her from his onslaught, the slung mud that splatters her without apology or pause. Gasping in something that shouldn't be surprise, the Shield is able to rescue only her tea, a slender hand slipping over the cup as she turns her head away. Earth strikes her cheeks, her hair, her chest, little brown puddles leaving longer streaks as gravity and their own semi-sentience sends them trailing back toward the ground.

Blinking, wiping earth from her eyes, Amalia turns back to face Deimos, a feral, eager grin slicing into her angular face. Without much hesitation she springs up to her feet, maintaining her movement as she reaches to the ground, scooping up a handful of glop and sending it flying in an elegant arc. She is not done there, though: she flies at him on long, tan legs, aiming to wipe her filthy hands upon whatever part of him he can reach, riotous laughter ringing from her lips as her bare toes squelch delightfully in the mud.

Not quite the reign of terror and danger he once exuded; but enough to send the hastening of amusement curling up his spine. He did watch from the open field, to see where the patterns and droplets ricocheted, splattered, or collided, pleased for unearthly reasons, connotations, and pure, wicked amusement as they volleyed and struck, reveling in the feral exposition her features bristle and seethe with. It was contentment in devilish, playful antics, rather than the maelstroms of unease, of apprehension, of treachery, of LongNight’s knives, the actions they mused and molded with frequency and upheaval. Challenges, dares, provocations, stoked by either, and brandished by both, a tactic employed when everything else couldn’t be matched, scorched, or contained.

He expected retaliation; awaited it with open arms as she sprung and moved, as he twisted and turned, too late as the mud struck along his shoulders, sliding down fabric and clothing. The General intended to make a break for it, to race across the field, but she’d always be faster, swifter, lighter due to size, and he was seized, possessed, for a moment as filthy hands grabbed hold of his arms, as they threaded their way down muscle and flesh, a trail of muck and mire dashed in prints, in tattoos, in halcyon remnants. He laughed, a warm, rapacious, boyish sort of glory, taking the opportunity to reach down, palms attempting to lift her over his shoulder, cart her around, deeper and deeper into the field of mud.

She lands her assault with dextrous finesse, swift and supple, her onslaught unyielding, hands raking wickedly down muscle and cloth. The mirth of it is invigorating, infectious, and she basks in the delicious warmth of mischief without any fear of reproach. Like war paint her handprints mark his skin, wild and possessive, the whorls and swirls of her. "Gotcha," she exhales, a rapturous note, her face upturned and flush with success beneath its coating of mud.

And then the world flips upside down- literally, in fact. Amalia gasps a choked half-squeal as hands catch her right around the waist, flipping her over the behemoth's shoulder with the same ease he might use on a sack of flour. "Hey!" Indignation is tempered and betrayed by laughter as her bare legs kick playfully upon his chest, otter fur now covering them protectively. Without much thought to the viability of the plan she attempts to lift his shirt with her toes, hoping to smear more mud on his abdomen, utterly childish in her retaliation.

No drums of war but the consequential pulse and persistence of victory, that they were alive, that they weren’t torn apart or ripped into pieces, that ash-coated and ember-embedded lungs didn’t last forever – a contagious anomaly of mischief and ruffian exploits. He couldn’t sink here, even with the mud chasing at his ankles, couldn’t mire himself here, root and anchor and wait for the mire to choke, rasp, and suffocate; saluting, embracing, the marks of her hands down the pathway of his frame. They held more meaning and signatures, emblems and banners, than the rest of the scars lining flesh and bone; her gotcha exhalation an anointing, consecration, he didn’t oppose. Yes, you do; had him, had him, had him –

The squealing ignited his movements into absolute devilry, quick, scorching maneuvers along his familiar fields, eyes catching on more decadence across patchworks of melted rime and thawing grass. Her kicking, flailing feet caused the slightest inhale, a catch in his breath, before ignoring it altogether; muscle and sinew smug, haughty, superior undulations, affording and permitting the potential bruises for mischief and unraveling endeavors. The Sword held no form of protest other than a sharpened gasp as cold feet paraded their way beneath his shirt and across his abdomen. He might’ve earned the snap of surprise; an irreverent sensation threading its way along his features, plan forming and reshaping as he carried her along, one palm purposefully snaking along her waist, fingers light, ticklish caresses.

Then, when he thought he’d found the perfect location, he lifted her off his shoulder, contorted and covered in the ricocheted, applied mud, and thereafter, when her feet might have been dangling, hovering over the surface, went to drop her into a larger expanse of puddles – a roar of laughter in his chest, in his lungs.

She squirms beneath his grasping hands, unable to see their destination, her swiftly approaching undoing. She is too preoccupied with the mischief of cold feet and the prying of errant fingers, giggling as he strokes her sides with devilish intent, inhaling the wholesome aroma of fresh earth and his sweat.

It is not until he stops that she realizes her danger, dark eyes widening for a fraction of a second as she hovers, suspended, over the gaping mire. Another day like this springs into her mind, but this time the girl is better prepared, ready to combat her lover in his mischief. As he lets her go the girl contorts, pulling in before expanding out, white fur taking the place where skin once lingered. It is the leopard who strikes the muddy ground, wasting no time in rolling over, saturating her long, luxurious fur.

And it is the leopard that rises onto her hind feet, planning to support her fores on his shoulder as she shakes, memory mud flying wildly through the morning air. It is a variable hurricane of muck she has unleashed, but the girl is not done: her broad head, also mired in filth, aims to press against his chin, to entrench his beard in liquid earth.

Oh, fine; the opportunity lost and wasted, onto his games and ploys, the calculations forced to spiral elsewhere. Retaliation would always be in order; neither one to settle amidst cheeky irreverence and sedition, the fur and paws along his shoulders already an indication that he was doomed to a multitude of rebuttal – snow leopard incantations suddenly flanked in mud, as if she were a part of its earth and loam. It was a merciless strike that he took in stride, and likely deserved, a ricocheting of spattered mud assaulting his figure – cloaked and flecked with cascading wallops of the silt, dirt, and soil, closing his eyes to at least escape some portion of damage and debris. His beard didn’t escape or evade the onslaught either, caught in the earthen wares, a grumble in his throat and chest – amusements and diversions, nothing unsettling or predacious.

All right – two could play at that game.

Just as he’d done before, except with little control or command, an attuned provocation lingered in the sanction if his mind; far more contorted and understood now, and birds rose from nearby bushes, cooing and cawing their intent. Compelled by his silent ministrations, because he stood quite still, stoic and reserved, with her framing tempestuous eaves; they rose and fell towards the mud, gathering goop in their talons, before becoming little mocking shadows, hovering over Amalia’s form, only to drop their newfound collections towards her frame (and if they happened to land on him too, it didn’t really matter – the principle of mischief and ridiculousness was still the same).

She wraps muddy forelimbs over his shoulders, pressing her face wantonly against his, her broad forehead and large paws leaving streaks and lines of mud upon every part of his body she can possibly touch. Attacking, fighting, competing, loving: she adores the play that joins them together, the way they wrap themselves around each other, chasing smoke and laughing at light.

He retaliates swiftly: he always does. Amalia yowls her surprise as birds arise from the marshes, dropping clawfuls of mud down upon her head, a rain of earth and refuse. Dropping her hold upon the Sword's shoulders the leopard falls back onto the ground, trying to cover her face with her paws and rumbling a strange, growling laugh. At the same time she reaches out with her mind for her own small army of animal assistants, ready to swiftly retaliate, to strike back as the dance demands.

From the grasses, the bushes, the damp and soggy ground, a flock of small but tenacious field mice emerge in a symphony of muddy squeaks. Paws soaked in mire they begin to climb, reaching for his limbs in an attempt to scamper up him and leave tiny prints on every surface of his form.

They were utterly ridiculous and it suited him just fine, clothing mottled, body framed and flecked in mud. He’d had far worse (soaked in blood, some of his, some of his enemies, some of his friends), and none of these antics left scars. Just amusement, diversions, and mischief, their favored rituals and challenges. He was left wide open on her latest assault, shoulders pinned down by paws, only an eye roll emerging in response, while the birds dropped their merciless wake. He was released in those moments, while she covered her face with her paws (as if it mattered anyway, when fur was drenched and hues were obliterated into anything but an obvious sienna). The heathen laughed too, a savage, wicked, fiendish assortment of deep grumbles and chuckles, before her next siege arrived.

Perhaps she’d been inspired by his efforts – the field mice surging and rising, a scampering and squeaking in inveigling motions, racing up his legs and over his arms, ticklish, causing only the briefest of compulsory shudders, as he instinctively tried to shake them off. They managed to climb wayward into his wild mane too, some sitting on top of his skull, very proud, kings of mountains and rodents – on a snort, he shifted into his tiger form. A harder motion and movement sent many of the Lilliputian army flying, soaring back into the tall grass nearby.

Then he shifted a massive paw into the mud, and much like he would’ve done a splash of water, maneuvered the streak of watered down silt and loam towards her. There were quick volleys thereafter too, before he hastened a rampage towards one of his targets, instigating, inviting a chase.

He treats her army as a true giant might, shuddering a moment before shifting, changing, taking the form best suited for the task: for what miniscule militia might could hope to withstand a cat?

The mice are sent flying a d fleeing in turn, easily routed by their robust opponent. Mildly bemused Amalia watches, rather remorseful for putting them into to such a situation, the remorseful general who grossly miscalculated what battles her infantry could manage. So distracted is the girl that she misses his onslaught yet again, only turning back in time to be thoroughly assaulted by a pawful of grime and watch his tail as he streaks away.

Toothily, the leopardess grins.

A leopard is no match for a tiger, of course, but a qulin's legs are long and lithe, their bodies made of supple sinew. In an instant she has shifted, donning a coat of lavender and steel before setting off in pursuit. Cloven hooves land on vaporous clouds rather than mud, keeping her from being terribly bogged down and increasing her dexterity. The long tail, however, is left to drag, beautiful fur growing more and more matted as it soaks in mud like a sponge.

It isn't long before she catches up, or close enough to attack. Without much thought to precision or aim she brings the long, long tail around hoping to catch him with its collected filth, to leave his sleek coat as dirt-streaked as hers.

A shift and a turn, no chance or possibility of outrunning a quilin’s exploits and advantages, long, limber muscles undulating across the grounds, but still not a match compared to her lengthier columns. Had he not been engrossed in the amusement and ridiculousness of the situation, he might have simply revered or admired her pursuit – but he was too intent on evasion and escape, the impending oblivion in their wake. He has no ammunition for this sort of battle; and upon catching up, neck and neck, ivory and argent fur became naught but brown, stained and mottled with the filth as her tail caught at his fibers, as he howled in laughter.

Because in the end, it didn’t really matter how filthy or disgusting they were; distracting ploys and diversions.

Try as he might, other than lofting a few well-placed mudballs from his paw again, he’d been doused and saturated in both human and bestial forms. On a rumbling growl, on an amusing tangent, he exuded his devilish glee. Fine, fine. I yield. He’d started it and she’d ended it – altering himself back to human form, though it didn’t really matter. Both portions of his essence were covered. A tip of his head included a question in its fold. Now what? Another ring of temptation blistered and beckoned, a snort flickering through.

He runs and she chases, galvanized, magnetized, drawn toward him with all the certainty of a lodestone to its pole. She does not kick up mud but he does, leaving her coat far from pristine, her hair tangled and her cheeks streak brown- but oh, the girl does not mind it, relishing their messy play. They are, in this moment, little more than children, youths caught in the morning mud, fearless and thoughtless in their ventures, their joy. Deimos laughs and the girl rejoins, a harmony rising in baritone and alto as the pair of them streak through field and fen, heedless of any who might stop to see.

At last, at last, they draw to a stop, and though she is stalwart the girl is gasping, her lungs filling deeply as she skids to a halt. Dark eyes glitter with triumph and mirth as her lover regains his humanoid form; messy, uncaring, she takes a step closer, pressing her large face into his forehead, shifting in turn, their skin already joined.

Mmm, Amalia murmurs in silence, slipping hands over his shoulders and into damp hair. Her smile is wicked as she pulls back from him, peering up at the disaster he is, a fire flaring easily in warm, onyx eyes. I'd say you owe me breakfast- but first, I think, a bath.
