However, he met her gaze with his own when she spoke. Smiling a bit sadly, he clasped his arms behind his back. ”Sometimes that’s all we can hope for.”
As she continued to speak, the smile slipped away. "I'm sorry. That's a lot to handle." His voice came out softly. "If you ever need help with anything, let me know. I know I'm just a student, but I can help out at the college or infirmary. Or if you want me to take the boys for a day, just say the word." This time, the sad edge to the smile was much stronger.
