Loren gave Phoebe a flat stare. ”I was disowned from my family, was informed by my cousin that my days were numbered, and told my actions fundamentally didn’t matter by a close friend.” The words came out in an almost monotone. At her comment, however, he sighed. ”There is reason for you to be upset.” This time, his voice was gentle.
Running his hand through his hair, he gave her an apologetic look. ”It’s not the same, no. But I can’t care about things I don’t know about.” Unlike her, his tone was far from emotionless, though it mostly soothing at the moment. As she continued to speak, almost dispassionately, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. ”I said I didn’t know what I wanted.” He opened his eyes. ”But you’re wrong. If what I want is incompatible with what other people want, then I have to consider that.” His words were quiet, but firm.
Shaking his head, he crossed his hands behind his back. ”That’s not true.” However, he fell silent, brow furrowed. ”I want children, eventually. But I’m still young. There’s time, and it would be irresponsible to raise children when I’m barely capable of taking care of myself.”
