DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
The Greatwood reopened, and the ravenous, rapacious glint in his thoughts contorted, coiled, convoluted in a predacious haze, marking the motions in his strides, in his paws, settling into a savage, stalking pace as he wound through thickets and glades. The familiar outlines of tree limbs, of boughs, of copses, and their pressing marks, feline eyes conspiring and searching, stalking, the arches and etches of his mind unraveling to mere raptorial predilections and not much else. The roar of the water billowed over his senses, turning towards the rushing rivulet, the streamlined current, neither bursting nor sauntering into its midst; a curious outset, an inquiring set of maneuvers. Were he in rapid pursuit, it would’ve been a different story, but instead he wandered along its curves and embankments, the gravel, granules, and sands threading through claws and rough, calloused pads, ears flicking back and forth, listening, listening, listening –

Coiled and bunched muscles, strong hindquarters, launched him on a leap, landing neatly on a set of rocks. On a lark, he lingered towards the Stonesong itself, tail swinging back and forth when his stare caught hold of movement in the water – gold, gilded, fins and scales swimming in the halcyon leisure of the morning sunlight. Feline nature, no matter the size or completely human aspect within, compelled him to watch, pondering, calculating, stare darting back and forth over several others making their appearance known, basking slightly below the surface, highlighted in their goldfish wandering. He devised, he lowered his form, and then made the plunge again – a secondary motion but this time straight into the water, intending to pounce, to dive, to catch, to assail.

LOREN
Loren was still working on that whole exploring the Greatwood thing. While he usually had company, today he was feeling the need for some alone time, so he’d set off on his own.

Well, kinda. Astra was by his side, but she felt more like an extension of himself than anything else. He didn’t mind at all as she bounded about, endlessly curious and kind. Whenever she trotted back to him for affection, he obliged with a scritch or a rub, which was enough to satisfy her.

Today they were making their way along the Stonesong. He and Abasi had only seen a portion of it, so the summoner was hiking as much of it as he could. Eventually, though, he stumbled upon a humorous sight. Deimos (the Launceleyn had seen the tiger enough times by now to know who it was) was perched on the edge of the river. Even as Loren watched, the General pounced at a goldfish. Reaching out with magic, the summoner swirled the waters around the fish in a miniature whirlpool, leaving it helpless against the other man's attack.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
The water chilled and pulled, a fiendish haze he implored, dug within, claws extended in their infernal reach – breath held in tiger lungs and predacious grandeur, blue eyes open to watch and bear witness to his scrupulous antics. These were not heathen brushstrokes of the battlefield, these were not the taut, uncoiling machinations of slaying enemies, these were not the howling chords of violence. Instead, it was rapture and play and amusement, a diversion in the midst of so many other things – still focused, still precise, and still at ease. The flash of gold scales registered in his mayhem, and his paws clawed into the water. What would it be like, to simply stay along these thresholds – another home, another shelter, another sanctum, lost in the finery of water, of yesteryear’s glories, of boys running across sands, of childhood shouts seeking waves and currents?

Bizarre motions disturbed the quiet musing, and he tilted his head within the ether’s breadth as one unfortunate fish found itself caught in a whirlpool. It spun and spun and spun, revolving motions until the thing was likely dizzy – he hastened forward, grabbing hold of its tail in his teeth, before rising to the surface. It struggled in his grasp as they broke through the veneer, as his nares widened and snagged at the air, as he took some pity upon it and sent it flying into the air, and then forgot the notion entirely, batting it with a paw until it was sent straight back to where it’d come from.

Only then did he realize he had company – eyes narrowing for a beat, before hastening an amiable growl at the summoner and his luxere along the shores.

LOREN
As Deimos finally glanced Loren’s way, he grinned at the General. ”You’re welcome.” There was a gently teasing tone to the summoner's voice. Astra pressed close to his side and stared at the other man with wide eyes. The Launceleyn stroked her absently, trying to comfort her.

Stepping closer, Loren glanced out over the water. "Any particular reason you're swimming with the fishes?" Absently, he raised a hand. Pieces of the water started flipping into the air, making pretty arcs. Simultaneously, moisture lifted from the tiger's fur, drying him instantly. The summoner eventually tossed all of it back into the river and simply settled in to watch it pass them by. His eyes followed a particularly fat looking goldfish as it swam.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
At the teasing, the beast ultimately realized the reasons why the water had twisted and turned, and an amused snort rumbled through his feline form. Quite a trick, and he dove down beneath again, catching the cautious, apprehensive look in the luxere’s eye – accustomed to it from all those gathered amongst that species – save for Auni. This time he meandered slowly along the whims of fins and scales, batting at a few while hind legs swam diligently, his predilection for swimming not lost; calmly stoking along the intervals of currents and ambling waves of the river’s edge, until snagging another one of the fish in his paws, lifting back up to the surface once more.

Head breaking through the glassy veneer, taking in a few deepening breaths, he surveyed the altered scene again, Loren closer to the edge. While he talked, Deimos lifted the fish out of the water, tossing it into the air between both forelegs, content in his feline torture. Amusement; which was the simple truth to the summoner’s inquiry – a chance to unwind, not in danger, not being asked to construct a building, a stall, or retrieve something monumental and throwing himself right back into trials and tribulations. The fish clearly wasn’t enjoying itself as much as Deimos was, and for a moment he let it sink back into the water, content to witness the arcs of Loren’s enchantments flip through the rivulet’s curves and bends, stunned when he could feel the same motions along his fur. He shook his cranium, the tips of his skull already dried – incapable of arching a brow in this form. Instead, he snagged at the fish again, catching it along his paw, and volleyed it towards Loren. What brings you here?

LOREN
Loren smiled easily. ”I have my talents.” Settling down into a cross-legged seat, he pulled Astra into his lap and simply held her, chin buried in her fur. While she buried her face in his shoulder, he watched Deimos prowl at the water's edge. The General swatted at the goldfish, and this time the summoner left the tiger to it.

Tilting his head, the Launceleyn let out a huff of laughter. Then he grinned at Deimos. "Amusement, huh?" Loren himself was obviously amused by that response. At the General's question, however, the summoner looked around at their surroundings. "Exploration." His voice came out quietly as he gazed off into the distance.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
Apparently Loren didn’t share in the same thread of diversions, the fish haphazardly bouncing along the embankment from where Deimos left it for the summoner to do what he wished. A quick, swift extension of his paw along the shore ensured the golden-scaled animal made it back to the water, the tiger following through. Another dive, another launch, another leap, the splash contorting in ripples and undulations, cascades of droplets flicking in all directions. Indicating he was listening, ears flicking back and forth at the reams of laughter and the aforementioned answer, his focus maintained on a few goldfish gathered in between his forelegs, unaware they’d been trapped, letting them settle for an instant or two, the slow, torturous assault of felines. The same piercing eyes swiveled back to the man and beast along the shore, tilting his head a fraction or two.

The Sword had explored this region frequently – from playing amidst the river, planting roses during the blight, being assaulted by Kiada and striving to bring her back – but hadn’t thought of what others might have experienced, or not, if that were the case, along the Greatwood channels. Perhaps Loren hadn’t had the opportunities, or was doing so all over again. He flicked one goldfish into the air, and batted at it as it descended, watching as it flew along and out of his reach, safe for the moment. Discover anything interesting?

LOREN
Loren’s eyes watched Deimos as he traipsed in and out of the water. The General seemed entranced by the fish, perhaps through some quirk of his feline nature. For the summoner's part, he simply sat there, hand stroking gently against Astra's fur, who settled in happily in his lap.

At the other man's question, the corner of the Launceleyn's eyes crinkled and his lips twitched. "Mmmmm." His amusement was evident. "Oh nothing much. Just our fearless General splashing about in a river and terrorizing some goldfish that don't seem to be doing anyone any harm." The words had a lightly teasing tone, and Loren's eyes sparkled with mirth.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
A few more fish were launched in a forceful slap of the water, via his paw, watching as they were directed in a less graceful arc than his counterpart’s droplet contortions – before hitting the surface and diving back under, desperate to evade his tactics. Bemused all the more, he waded in further and further, and then dove back down, attempting to snag on gilded tails with fangs and canines, swiping along while hind legs paddled. Eventually the rest seemed to have caught on to his antics and tactics, and his precision couldn’t match their speed or fortitude for the river; disappearing behind rocks, stones, and natural bends and curves within the current. Deimos came back up again, and then chose to meander along the embankment, careful not to wander too close to the luxere and summoner; since the former seemed threatened, apprehensive of his presence. Fair, given predatory menace and stature.

He lifted his feline head, ears twitching, form shaking off the droplets all over again before focusing on the amusements and teasing. An almost tiger shrug corded through his shoulders, and then a snort billowed thereafter. They are fine. No harm, no foul, none of them dead; as if this perhaps justified his diversions.

LOREN
Loren watched the arc of the latest goldfish as Deimos batted it out of the water. Grinning as it splashed back down, he let the amusement flood the bond between the two of them. "No they are traumatized for life." Then the corners of his eyes crinkled further. "Or at least however long goldfish memory lasts."

Clearing his throat, he raised a hand in the classic scene setting gesture. "Imagine this. You're a poor innocent goldfish, minding your business, when suddenly this monster claws you out of the water, leaving you gasping for breath and trembling with fear. Then, worst of all, it releases you to live in terror that at any moment it might return to do it again." He laughed outright at that description.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
Deimos was content to witness the theatrics, just not play a part in them (never one with a flair for the dramatic; more inclined to action and response, to motions and maneuvers). The depths of his eyes wandered back and forth over the summoner’s gestures, and then towards the luxere, as if understanding how it suffered. An amused snort followed through, flicking along with the weight of the attuned connections, not entirely fussed with the goldfish’s predicaments. Maybe they were Reaper tendencies, or just the foolish notions of predacious felines, hunting down anything they moved, inclined to torture and maim out of pure mirth. Trauma builds character. Now they have stories to tell. An inward snicker, granting and giving naught else, his tail swindled back and forth, perhaps the only betrayal of movement on his part, otherwise a stony figure and Colossus along the shoreline, basking in the sun’s rays.

LOREN
Loren let out a huff of laughter at Deimos’ claim. However, the summoner nodded sagely. "Aye, that they do. Stories of the nightmare cat that came out of nowhere to terrify them, before releasing them to warn their friends of the danger that lurked just around the river bend." His amusement was obvious, and while he wasn't entirely certain, he thought the General was amsued as well.

Shooing Astra off and standing up, the Launceleyn brushed himself off. "Well, if you just came out here to brutalize those poor innocent fish, I suppose I should leave you to it. I'll see you around." He gave the other man a cheerful wave. Then the Launceleyn continued to make his way along the river's edge, eyes wide as he took in the life all around him.

DEIMOS
the resurrected sword
Nothing refuted in the series of sagas, triumphs, and melancholy; everyone having some form of a story where the world cut too close, where the blades simmered in too deep, where suffering clambered and closed over a portion of the mind. But at the whims and entanglements of goldfish, the beast could only chuckle over the lines of the animal connections; the nightmare cat come to terrorize (and if Loren only understood that in another world, another time, another place, he’d been less cat and more intimidating cretin, the creature, the maneuvering, living, breathing weapon sending fear into the hearts of his enemies, or that sometimes he missed it, the shuddering of others before him).

But then the summoner had enough of the antics, other things to do, and Deimos rose from the shoreline, stretching, shaking again, likely needing to do much of the same – the diversions remiss once more, fleeting, fleeting, fleeting, a billowing essence no one could really snag for long. Too many other things to do, too many other tempestuous edges to explore. He extended a nod of goodbye, acknowledgment to both, and then he too was gone from the way he’d come, winding along wooded trails and thickets.
