Loren
not afraid to use every trick in the book

Loren had barely begun to scratch the surface of the Atheneum, as the structure with the books was apparently called. Indeed, after that initial discovery with Ronin, the former (and maybe now current) librarian had been busy with other matters, namely survival, along with relationship drama with both his family and his partner whatever Remi. However, inexorably, he was drawn back to the location. It called to something deep within his bones; not only were the books unknown to him, something that thrilled him to his core, the thought of something relatively normal seemed excellent to him.

So, he’d shown up that morning hoping to spend some time putting the place in order. Indeed, he’d come up with a whole plan to explore it—putting any volumes in danger of damage to the elements, though overall they were surprisingly well preserved and untouched by the years—before he began to catalog them. Once that daunting task was done, he could start to reorganize them.

Of course, best laid plans and all that: he’d walked into the room and immediately let out an outraged shriek. A squash was crouched over a book that had either fallen (or perhaps been pulled), and it was ripping it to shreds. Throwing out a hand, sparks flew and a bird of fire burst into being as every part of Loren’s very being protested this idignity. While perhaps summoning a phoenix in a room full of very flammable tomes was not a great idea, the Launceleyn’s control was excellent; the bird swooped forward and snatched up the gourd in its talons with precise movements, not even a single spark falling on the damaged pages.

The phoenix tossed the gourd into the air and then flew through it; the smell of burned squash filled the air. Under normal circumstances, Loren might’ve found it delicious. However, he was too angry to care. Besides, it was a bit too well done.

Immediately, a chittering started up from every corner of the room. Loren whirled, eyes widening, as a veritable army of gourds appeared in the stacks. Half of them scattered to the far corners of the room. However, he was more preoccupied with the half that charged towards him, an enormous tide. Although he directed his phoenix to tackle the largest clump, he couldn’t have her cover every side.

Nor did he see the gourds that had climbed the shelves and dropped down onto him, raining up his shoulders. Some missed and splattered onto the ground. However, enough landed that the weight bore him to the ground. They immediately began biting and nipping; while each individually wasn’t enough to do much damage, together they were doing quite a bit of harm. Hopefully someone had heard his cry from earlier—or his screams now—and would come to rescue him from being squashed, in more ways than one.

Remi needed to speak to Loren. Desperately. Though the alchemist wasn't entirely sure how to explain precisely how he felt (or the lack of feeling), he couldn't stomach the thought of trying to meet the strange criteria left by the deity on his own. Naively though and with perhaps the only true bit of hubris that Remi possessed, he sort of thought merely seeing the librarian would be enough to defeat whatever Frey had done. After all, Remi had never loved before, and so his feelings (or former feelings) for the Launceleyn were entirely untainted. Remi loved him in the purest sense, without conditions or restrictions, and had already committed himself to doing so come what may. And so, in some secretive and perhaps prideful place, Remi thought that merely by seeing the man he loved so strongly again would simply be enough to undo whatever it was Frey had done.

After Ronin had mentioned the Atheneum, Remi thought it a logical place to start looking. Pushing open the doors, Remi peered inside. "Loren? There is something we need to talk about—" Remi began, before spying the phoenix as well as the Launceleyn covered by ...

...gourds?

"Loren!" The alchemist called, immediately rushing forward. Though his magic was not strong and was still quite new, already Remi was finding that it sung in his bones and itched for his mind to call upon it. Without any fear of the bizarre vampire squashes (they were just vegetables, seemingly with magic right?), Remi reached out a hand and made a childish swatting gesture. It hadn't occurred to him that his magic might just work on thought alone. As he did so, a few of the smaller gourds were thrust away from Loren to splat against the floor.

amalia chandrakant
there is a color that shines through your skin
Like the moon on the wind
She, too, is conspicuously absent from the library lately, the budding bakery taking up much of her time. Never expecting baking to be such a grandiose undertaking - her grandmother had always maintained the shop with such skill and finesse! - Amalia is exhausted at the end of each day, with scarcely the will for her evening ablations.

Still, she misses it dearly, the dusty books in their towering rows, the warm cavern of knowledge, at once both foreign and familiar. So it is that she makes her way back, at once wary and wondering at the changes she might find. In her hand she clutches her staff - for no reason, she assures herself: certainly not because of the trepidation that fills her at the idea of seeing strangers within those hallowed halls. Not that she could ever assault a stranger, lest of all unprovoked- the branch is more of a comfort item, its well-worn wood smooth and supple beneath her calloused hands.

Abruptly, Amalia stops. The Antheneum is there before her, just as she left it, and yet something is wrong. Faintly she hears it: voices, rustling, wrongness. It fills the girl with indignation and concern. Swallowing, Amalia tightens her grip and slips into the Antheneum, fire burning in her breast as she imagines the indignities being done to her books.

Fire, indeed- the scene that meets her is chaotic and confusing, but one thing is immediately apparent: there is fire in the library, strangely shaped shocks of it, zipping among the... gourds? No, this cannot be: the girl has faced strangely aggressive pumpkins before; what are they doing here? No time to dwell- galvanized, the girl leaps forward, staff raised high before dropping down to squash a wayward... well, squash.

Anxiety briefly quelled by passion, the baker strides closer, approaching the poor man caught beneath a mass of melons. "Put that fire away!" Amalia demands, her sharp gaze briefly flickering up to the second man - she doesn't know who summoned the phoenix - before reaching down to pluck a pumpkin off of the captive, inspecting it with a critical glare.

The scary squash hisses in protest, thrashing in the air despite its lack of limbs, and the girl tosses it aside. "Do you know anything about them? Did you bring them from... where you came from?" she asks curiously, offering her left hand to assist the captive stranger to stand while prodding away pumpkins with the staff within her right.

(No one else was answering and obviously Loren needs more Edy in his life)

So Loren won. Good for him. Did Edy want to share a house with her family for reasons other than simply keeping them all together? Of course she did. Loren was good at back touches, could conjure shit out of thin air, and was a pretty good cook and story-teller. So sue her for being a bit selfish, and though her teenager-fueled angst at having her housing proposal rejected was still burning brightly, her love for her family would always be stronger.

Also she was bored.

Finding her self at whatever counted as a library in this place, Edy was delighted to see pumpkins exploding all over Loren's precious books (well, they weren't his, but knowing the Launceleyn he'd probably consider them precious just the same). With a bright laugh as Amalia scolded what could only be Loren's phoenix, Edy grinned devilishly as she caused a gourd that was trying to bite her leg to slowly implode in on itself as she sucked the life out of it.

"Thought you were a bit tidier than this, Loren." The teenager trilled brightly, crossed her arms and giving her older kin a wolfish grin.

Loren
not afraid to use every trick in the book

Quite a bit happened seemingly all at once. First, a familiar voice called out and Loren seized upon it like a drowning man seized a rope. Remi was here, and Loren knew his...whatever they were...would save him from his current predicament. The Launceleyn was still getting used to letting others help him—for too long he’d only be able to rely and trust himself, betrayed by everyone he cared about—but he knew Remi, intimately at this point, and knew he could trust the other man with the librarian's life. ”Remi…” Loren managed to croak out weakly, as some of the oppressive pressure vanished from him before a gourd tried to shove its way into his mouth. He bit down in retaliation; apparently these vegetables weren’t the smartest critters...or plants, or whatever.

Before he could do much, another, much more strident voice rang out, one Loren didn’t know. Unfortunately for the strange woman, the fire would be remaining for the time being: it was the former duke’s most potent weapon, and though the squash had originally seemed like laughable foes, they’d already proven more dangerous than Loren could ever have imagined. If Amalia had bothered to pay attention, she would’ve clearly seen that the only harm done to the books was by the gourds. As if Loren would ever let a volume get damaged by his actions. He wasn’t an amateur, even if he was still buried under a pile of root vegetables.

Still, the woman started whacking pumpkins and other assorted squashes and he’d be willing to forgive quite a bit of hostility on her part for assistance with the infestation. However, the load had been lightened enough by the actions of Loren’s saviors that, even with his meager strength, he was able to roll onto his back; this dislodged some of the gourds and crushed others, leaving him coated in a disgusting goo. Sitting up, he glared at the newcomer. ”Fire stays until the gourds go. Fifi isn’t going to so much as let a single spark land on a book, which you could tell for yourself by the lack of the burning paper scent in the air.” His voice came out more harshly than it usually did; near death would do that to him, as would being challenged in his own library.

He was able to stagger to his feet just in time for Edrei of all people to wander in, grinning and speaking in an entirely too happy tone. ”You’re hardly one to talk about making messes, since I seem to recall you completely destroying my kitchen and carving a death threat into my wall to boot in our first ever meeting. Way to leave an impression.” Loren’s voice came out snappier and harder than it usually did: he was in no mood to play Edy’s games while they were under attack. Besides, he was probably mad at her for some reason or another.

Turning back to the strange woman, Loren regarded her impassively. ”No, we didn’t bring them with us. Guess that makes you a native?” He was about to ask her whether she knew anything about this; however, before he could even shout a warning, a wave of gourds launched themselves from a shelf above her, raining down. He reached out instinctively with his magic (which he still hadn’t quite figured out how to manage in this new world) and batted a few out of the air with a thought (no gestures required), but he was too weak to stop them all. Even worse, Fifi was still keeping the main mass of the ground gourds at bay. Maybe his companions would have better luck protecting the stranger.

"Still being an asshole, I see." With all the nonchalance of a teenager, Edy just pursed her lips slightly before shaking her head. "I think you'll remember that you did most of the damage. And it wasn't threat Loren. It was a promise that I wouldn't leave you." This last bit was said quiet pointedly since, you know, Loren had been doing quite a bit of leaving lately and Edy was very much still holding a grudge. She loved the idiot of course, but that didn't mean that she didn't also hate him right now too. Still, it hurt to have him so carelessly bring up what was a horrific encounter for them both so casually, especially since she'd thought that it was all in the past.

Before she could storm out or do something equally petulant, a flock (hoard? coven? what did you call possess gourds?) suddenly descended upon the pretty girl. Seeing as Loren was allowed to use fire, surely that mean she could as well?

Miming holding a bow and arrow, Edy knocked a fake arrow and when she let it fly (sound effects included), a bolt of fire raced towards one of the gourds, toasting it in midair.

It smelled pretty good actually.

Truthfully, Remi was both frustrated and relieved by the interruption that the gourds provided. This was not going to be an easy conversation he assumed and was not one that he was particularly ready to have. Diverting the course of a few bitey-pumpkins seemed as good as a distraction as any.

Startled by Loren's abrasive tone towards the woman who had entered, Remi blinked back his surprise. While it was true that the two men had really only spent time alone together, the times Remi had seen Loren out in public had usually been social occasions: weddings or political gatherings. Still, this was not like Loren. Perhaps this wasn't the right time to have this conversation with him at all. Indeed his response to the latest addition made Remi almost flinch at just how cold it was. Not knowing enough about the Launceleyns to peg Edrei as one of them, not for the first time Remi wondered about Loren's life and how it could be that someone might destroy his kitchen and carve a death threat on his wall, but not deign to tell Remi about it. However as Edy spoke it didn't take a genius to put two and two together and assume that she was family. Which of course meant that she might be responsible for the scars on Loren's body.

Remi didn't need to feel love for the former-duke to be immediately put on the defensive towards the teenager, but before he might have done or said something, pumpkins fell from a shelf above towards Amalia.

Unlike Loren, Remi knew nothing of magic and so superfluous gestures were used in place of proper focus. Suddenly a wooden arch would appear before Amalia like some bizarre oversized umbrella, hopefully diverting the pumpkins around her where Edrei could continue to burn them away.

Amalia's hand drops at the tone of the man's voice, her offer to help instantly redacted as she hears the venom in his tone. She came here to help, and instead is met with fire - fire! - and a lecture from the stranger she rescued about how somehow that should not be concerning. Anger washes over her, hot fire rising in her chest and her throat- How dare you? she wants to snap, but her lips stay sealed in a thin, harsh line, dark eyes nearly black with slowly growing rage.

Her scowl only deepens as the girl from the festival appears as well, and is met with scathing remarks and ingratitude, as well as accusations of... home destruction? Clearly there is some deeper drama going on, some hidden resentments that the baker is not privy to and would not like to learn more about. All she wants is for them to leave, to evacuate her library and leave her books in peace. Stupid Outlanders - she can finally understand it, the contempt some have for their kind. The only decent one seems to be the quiet boy, but she is not in a mood to separate one from the other- right now, she dislikes them all, and simply wants them to leave.

The asshole is speaking again, addressing Amalia, and the girl responds with an overt glare, her earlier curiosity all but squelched by the stranger's hostility. "Yes," she snaps- but before she can say more there's a great noise from above her, and suddenly pumpkins are raining around her head.

She raises her arms, exclaiming in surprise and pain as a gourd strikes the side of her head. "Mort!" she cries, leaping forward in an attempt to escape the onslaught. Around her, magic and movement and by Caido, more fire, and a gourd is somehow pulling her hair while another tries to climb up her leg. The wound on her head is bleeding slightly, but as she tries to pull the pumpkins off she barely notices. "No more fire!" she shouts again as a flaming arrow whizzes past her ear. She doesn't care what the outlanders think - the pumpkins can eat them for all she cares, as long as nothing happens to her books.

Loren
not afraid to use every trick in the book

This was rich: Edrei, as always, was acting as if her actions didn’t have consequences and that she was never the one to blame. Unfortunately for her, Loren was done coddling his family. And then she had the audacity to come and call him an asshole when she was one of the most selfish people he’d ever met. Well, too bad for her; Loren was finally giving in to his darker impulses and letting his family know what he really thought of them. ”Takes one to know one.” Yes, Loren was being petty, but Edy was the epitome of petty and small-minded, so he didn’t feel bad in the slightest. ”Yeah, well, your promise not to ever leave me forced me out of my own home that night, so forgive me for taking a different point of view over it.” He hadn’t realized just how much bitterness he carried from that night, and of being the one forced to apologize when she had been at least partially, if not fully, at fault.

The stress of his life and this situation was causing him to be less diplomatic than he might otherwise have been—not that he’d ever claimed to be good at it, quite the opposite—but he found that it felt good to cut loose. In fact, being responsible had brought him nothing but pain. The few times he’d allowed himself to have fun and act like a true Launceleyn, with no regard for others, were the happiest times in his life. He didn’t need to be careful all the time.

Except where it came to his book. Amalia didn’t know this, but he would never allow harm to come to them, which was why he was fighting back against this assault with his most powerful tools. He was tiring though: between being attacked and the strain of casting multiple spells in quick succession (especially since magic was wonky) he was quickly going to run out of energy.

However, his eyes widened as an arch appeared above the woman; Edy didn’t have that sort of ability, so it had to be the other woman. After all, Remi didn’t have magic, so process of elimination led Loren to conclude the stranger was a mage of some sort. If so, she should know that they had control over where and how their spells hit. At least this time the fire wasn’t Loren’s fault: while his phoenix was still on the field, guarding their backs, Edy was the one to throw the fireball. ”I think what you meant to say was ‘thank you for saving me.’” This lady really didn’t know what she was talking about.

Ignoring her for now, Loren turned to Remi. ”Can you pull her out of the danger? I’ll cover you.” Indeed, he was already calling up more power, straining, trying to bat the still attacking gourds out of the air above the beleaguered stranger. He was deep in his magic, but something caught the corner of his eye; turning his head, his eyes widened as he saw a pumpkin pick up a book, roll, and then chuck the volume at the group. It fell off the shelf and landed on the ground with a splat, but the book flew true. Loren ducked, but he wasn’t the target. No, Edy was: the tome was headed straight for her head, and it looked heavy.

This time, Loren actually found himself in agreement with the strange woman. ”No more fire!” He tried to catch the book in the air with his powers, but they were momentarily spent. Even worse, other pumpkins were following the first ones lead, and many more books strarted winging through the air towards Loren’s relative from every direction. Still, if the vegetables were smart enough to use the library’s tomes as projectiles, Loren wasn’t going risk them getting hurt. Indeed, though it hurt his heart—though his slightly exhausted body thanked him—he dismissed the phoenix and summoned a simple wooden club, swinging it clumsily to try and smash any squash that got near as he attempted to clear a path to Edy. Honestly, he wasn’t sure if he was planning to save her or the books.

Apparently Remi's attempt at creating a barrier over Amalia was not quite as clever as he had thought it would be. That, or the gourds were even more clever than he had given them credit for, which he didn't really think was possible.

As Loren gave him an instruction, the alchemist complied immediately. Turning his gaze towards Amalia, he extended one of his hands with a gentle beckoning motion. "I have only seen the gourds attack moving targets. Perhaps if we leave they will follow and leave the books alone." Both Loren and this woman seemed to be more focused on the safety of the books rather than themselves, and so he thought this a particularly good argument to make. The idea that Loren might have competition when it came to librarian wouldn't occur to him until later, but it would make him chuckle at the thought.

"Loren will not let any harm befall the books, I can promise you that." He encouraged just as Fifi disappeared and a book seemed to be whirling towards Edy. Reaching out with his own telekinesis to try and divert the book away from the younger Launceleyn, Remi turned his pale sea-glass green gaze back to Amalia.

"Oohh. Nice one Loren." Edy sneered rolling her eyes. "Forced you, mr. I'm so fucking powerful now? Please. You lost your shit because you don't know how to separate the past from the present." Even as the words left her lips in a cool stream of teenage-righteousness, Edy felt like crying. What was worse, is that underneath that, Edy just felt like hugging Loren and asking to start over. But clearly that wasn't happening, and so, having learned absolutely no coping skills in the Launceleyn compound, she simply raised her chin, narrowed her eyes and sneered again.

They all yelled no more fire and surprisingly, Edy listened. She had absolutely no reverence at all for books, but in the midst of a battle the Launceleyn girl had been trained to take orders from above. And asshole or not, Loren did outrank her, even if their family was all but dissolved anyways. Instead of running, Edy merely fixed her sights on the gourds coming her way and crossed her arms. Reaching out with her magic as soon as they got close, Edy pulled at them with her lifedrain causing what little biological animation they had to immediately cease.

Youthful and spry, Edy darted around one of the shelves glaring around at the gourds and tempting them to follow her. "What, no cute boy to escort me out?" She chimed from behind the bookshelf, both annoyed that Loren cared more about saving a complete stranger than his own kin and being told she couldn't play with fire anymore.

Amalia's anger flushes brighter as Loren insists a debt of gratitude is owed. Eyes blazing, she turns away from the man, instead lunging forward toward Remi, whose outstretched hand she does not grasp, but who she, at this moment, hates slightly less than the man she now deems responsible for bringing this chaos into her haven. The curly haired stranger's suggestion they leave is the most sensible thing she's heard all day. Nothing would please her more than to get all of these strangers out of her library, with their wanton fire and their disregard for anything sacred, old, preserved.

Her agreement falls short, however, cut off by a gasp of indignation as a book flies overhead, heading straight toward the dark girl. "Not the books!" Amalia cries, in time with the grumpy stranger's exclamation of 'No more fire!' (oh, and now extinguishing the fire is fine, since a man has demanded it- but she'll drop that particular gripe for now). The gourds seem to have turned their attention to Edrei, and with it, the target of their books. Amalia groans and grits her teeth, helpless yet determined, useless beside these magic wielders but still determined to do something, anything, to protect the closest thing she has to a home.

"Catch the books!" the girl cries, "And try to lead them out!". She lunges toward Edy, reaching out with nimble fingers to pluck a tome from the air, while another thumps into her side. With a groan Amalia grabs the projectile, placing both carefully on a shelf before reaching to grab another, as though this will do anything to protect anyone - but still, a girl can try.
